In this episode of Al-Kee-Hol, we followed our host Dominique Rousake on a trip along the “Route de l’Absinthe”, the beautiful French-Swiss absinthe route, and watched as he learns about the history and effects of absinthe-the potent, anise-flavored spirit that was a favorite of Vincent van Gogh, Ernest Hemingway, Edgar Allan Poe, Oscar Wilde, as well as many more artists and thinkers.
Dominique meets up with the owners of French and Swiss distilleries to find out more about the differences between their nations’ varieties of absinthe. They share a few of the stories about how and why absinthe was made illegal-and how people continued to make it anyway. The people who live along the absinthe route are crazy about the "green fairy," and we witness their passion firsthand. The journey traverses snowy hills and vast forests, ending in France, where absinthe was first invented. Here, Dominique tries a meal comprised of mostly absinthe ingredients.

I’m so thankful for this video because I have a very new found passion for absinthe 🤩🙌❤️And It excites me. Funny thing is I don’t like alcohol 🥃 🍺 and I don’t drink because I never fell in love with “drinking” but I believe absinthe could really help me discover a historical liking that so many people fell in love with. I recall Egyptians drinking a form of absinthe and I also recall absinthe named as “drink of the gods”.

well thujone + alcohol is quite different than only alcohol. many cultures mixed other psychoactives with their booze, everything from mundane things like hops in beer to hallucinogens like henbane or willka (anandenanthera colubrina iirc)

I've always wanted to try Absinthe, but I heard that the shit that's legal in America is a watered down version of the real thing. So I'm going to wait till I visit a country that doesn't act like a complete bitch, to try it. I hope the wormwood helps me see things you don't normally see, vivid colors, shadows, black people raising their kids etc. If anyone has tried the authentic green fairy, please let me know your experience.
@KingDennisJensen
@KingDennisJensen 9 жыл бұрын
Yeah, in America and Canada the stuff that they sell at the liquor store is absolute garbage. I'm Hungarian and drank it many times with friends. It's a little strong by itself hence the usage of water and sugar (in some countries) But the drunk off it is quite nice. Very different from others.

TheMexikingisback2 It is not only in the US where you get bad absinthes. Even in Europe there are a lot of brands around, which don't use the proper method of macerating and distilling, but just use high proof alcohol, oils of herbs [e.g. wormwood] and artificial color. Unfortunately absinthe doesn't have an organization behind it, which controls what you can call absinthe and what not. However it is quite easy to find good absinthes - you can use the internet to find information. Usually bohemian style absinthe [Absinthe made or in the style of Czech products, there absinthe was never banned] are crap. Also look out for extremely high proof absinthe [anywhere around 80%] - these are usually not authentic. The US has pretty much the best selection of spirits anywhere in the world - so you definitely find good absinthes - either way imported or domestically produced. However if you are buying cheap absinthe, it is very likely that you get a not authentic absinthe. Unfortunately the price for authentic absinthes are on a higher note....

All in your imagination. The ingredient thujone is at low enough levels that in order to get high off it, you'd be long, long dead of alcohol poisoning well before that happened. Enjoy it for what it is, not for a long-debunked rumour.

I was pleased about the documentation , The first image of the docu shows the absynth from Kübler which is based in Neuchatel and I drank it yesterday evening ;-) . You can get it in every supermarket in Switzerland. The host is boring as hell, but the topic is cool. He should have asked the locals in Val the Travers to get him some real Absynth with high Thujon content above 35mg per litre. Sadly Absynth with high Thujon is nowadays still illegal, but sometimes you get some locals who make it.

The Green Fairy stuff is utter nonsense. Any craziness while drinking absinthe is a direct result of the fact that you're drinking a very high percentage alcohol (54-90%). There's no psychoactive effects. I've drunk plenty of absinthe. It has to be enjoyed and not chugged.
