Late Sunday here in California. I had to attend to other from the morn. The video images of about 6:40 into the timeline looked quite to my favor beyond those prior and after.

Some real beauties Kim. The experience of seeing the Northern Lights must be exhilarating and the joy of capturing them somewhat secondary, yet powerful as well.

Hi Kim, you are so lucky to see the Northern Lights,down here in the Midlands light pollution blows the skies out for faint lights... We came to Scotland loads of times over the years, but we never managed to see the Northern Lights... Great Pics, Kim, thanks for uploading...xx

Wonderful images!! Despite being in what should be an ideal location in Canada for seeing the northern lights, I've never had a great sighting. Probably not enough patience! In other news...kp5...ugh...can lead to bad drone flying! I had a terrible flight on September 1 in a kp5 event:. Drone went out of control at 90 kph! Regained control, laundered my pants, and all is well. Several videos of course.
@kimgrantphotography5 жыл бұрын
Thanks Don. That's such a shame that you've never seen them given your location. I didn't realise kp levels effected drones (learn something new everyday) 😊
@DonJoyce5 жыл бұрын
@@kimgrantphotography Yes, you and Ed will need to keep an eye on Kp index when flying your new Mavic Mini drone after Christmas (oops! secret?). KP represents activity level of the earth's geomagnetic field, which can affect GPS satellite information...which drones depend upon for positional stability.

Hi Kim -- Great video! I would love to chase the northern lights, unfortunately here in Texas USA, we don't get them! I did, however, see them when I was about 10 (58 years ago) in the very northern tip of Minnesota USA. As a child, I remember it was amazing and it inspired me to appreciate nature's wonder all my life! Look forward to your videos every week!!

Hi, great photos! My wife and I are wanting to head up to Scotland this October to have a look for the lights, what website shows the forecast/data for when they'll be brightest? Are we better going to a dark skies site(glamping) or just head as north as we can and drive out to the middle of nowhere? And is the coast better then mainland?cheers!
@kimgrantphotography4 жыл бұрын
Hi Rachel, although it is still possible that you may be able to see the lights this year, we aren't in peak solar cycle just now so displays aren't as common as they are some years. Having said this, there is no harm in trying as they do still happen now and again. I believe it will be about 5 years before displays become regular again. I use a website called Aurora EU to help predict if they will be visible and a UK aurora Facebook page to look for any local sightings. Heading north will increase your chances or seeing them. Thankfully in the north of Scotland, pretty much anywhere outwith a town or city you can see them (even in the outskirts) but the darker the better. I personally find a north facing coastline to be best as there isn't any hills, land or distant light pollution from other towns and villages on the horizon. Hope this helps and if you do come up, I wish you all the best.

@@kimgrantphotography hi, thanks for getting back to me, I'll do a bit of research before we decide to book. I thought it was just the time of year to look out for, I didn't realise it changed a lot year by year 😊

We have literally just decided to do this for next year. Can't do it this year as we are going to America for Christmas. But will be doing loads and loads of research to find the best place to see them. Is it possible to get them on video?

Sounds great Tony! I hope that you have a great time. I have never tired to capture it on video but seen many capture them using timelapse. Good luck with your venture.

Is there a best time of year? Best location? How do you get the forcast for it?
@kimgrantphotography5 жыл бұрын
From late Sept - early April is the best (though both ends of this time scale seem to be the most active). In all honesty, the Northern lights are very hard to predict (even the expects often don't know until the day but have a rough idea 3 days prior - when a sunspot erupts from the sun). I follow a few Facebook groups that tell you of any activity and a website called aurora Europe to look at the stats. Anywhere dark and away from light pollution with a good view of the northern horizon is best 😊
@twotone30705 жыл бұрын
So, if I hear you correctly, the best place to photograph the northern lights is at a hospital? I mean that the place you will find the most patience?

Where can we get good view near Edinburgh
@kimgrantphotography5 жыл бұрын
I'm not very familiar with the Edinburgh area but anywhere out of the city and away from light pollution with a good view of the northern horizon. The south of Scotland doesn't see the lights as much as the North but they still appear from time to time if its a good show 😊 good luck!

The lights run on an 11 year cycle. We're currently at a low ebb, and it won't be full on until 2025.

I travelled to Northern Norway a couple of years ago, to go Northern Lights hunting, not quite sure I would even see them, much less be able to photograph them. But boy was I lucky! Saw them almost every other night on a two week long trip. And on a couple of nights, they were so intense, they were obviously green to the naked eye, with even a bit of purple at the bottom once. On other trips, my camera could see the green but I couldn't, so I know just how lucky I was on that first trip. And I got some of my fav shots ever, such as this one: thomasparisphoto.fr/GreenCurve What a magical experience the aurora can be. Can't wait for sun activity to rise again.
