Absolutely fascinating. I'm so happy someone took their time to film Aberdeen like this. we are now able to step back in time and see how much has changed, for the bad or for worse. Thanks for posting these videos.

Good that you recorded this. 👍🏻 It's sad to see the heart of Aberdeen has been torn out in so many areas , in the name of 'progress & shopping malls'. Where did those nice Granite buildings go that they had numbered every stone ( for rebuilding? ) Who needs so many 'shopping malls' ? 🤨 George Street died a death after St.Nicholas ctr built & cut it off. Now Union Street is dying a slow death as rents & charges go up. Imho the council should've stayed in a refurbished St. Nicholas House , instead of demolition & taking over our Marischal College . What a mess they have been allowed to make of the town. 😥 £€$ Money & bribes control Aberdeen Council. It all began with cutting off Castle Street to get to the beach - still seems ridiculous. 🐱♏☯️🌌🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

They rebuilt the building with the arched windows and the Burton sign in it's original footprint. The footage at 2:40 to 2:50 shows the rebuilt buildings.

@@EzeePosseTV I was involved in the demolition and reconstruction works including, along with John Fyfe, the assessment of how much more granite was required to complete the structure. The backing stonework built in granite pinnings (i.e. granite offcuts after stones were dressed) was removed and rebuilt with an engineering brick backing which will last for some considerable time! My memory reminds me that the whole area was known as the "Golden Triangle' and was completely rebuilt with the exception of the Prince of Wales pub whose owner would not sell his property!

@@weeriewullie Wow, that is interesting to learn. I can not even imagine the hassle of having to number key the granite pinnings, haha! Yikes. The brick backing makes more sense as it's more practical and strength can be adjusted for purpose. I remember watching the dismantling process over the time it took and did wonder why the Prince Of Wales section was not included in the rebuild. You probably saw me many times stood at the top of the St Nicks stairs watching, the scruffy looking older teen I was then. I never knew it was called the Golden Triangle though. I do remember back in 1979 (I was 4 years old) there were little shops all the way round the back next to the graveyard as I remember my mum taking me down the steps from the graveyard into the shop across the wee cobble road. It looks awful seeing it all blanked off now. But thank you for sharing a wee bit of your experience and knowledge of this site. I love stuff like this.

Thank you so much for posting. I was not born until 1996 so cannot remember any of this but I am fascinated by Modern History and it's shocking how fast things can change. Really enjoyed this. The 90s seemed to be such a great decade but sadly my memories start at year 2000.

At 4 minutes onwards, where were these old buildings? Some look like shops and others look like old houses? Were these where the St. Nicholas Centre is now?

The buildings from 4 minutes onwards are the rear of the shops which were on Correction Wynd taken from St Nicholas Lane just up from the Prince of Wales Pub.

I think that it must have been a clothes shop but wasn't there for long as I had forgotten about it.
