I can't wait for more. I'll be honest, I saw this instrument as a bit of a novelty instrument... I play them at the music store when I pick up guitar strings and look at new guitars. I have came away with a deeper understanding of the culture around this instrument and why it exists in the first place... Why it's so important too.

That's awesome to hear, as the reason I started making this documentary was to promote steel pan culture to an international audience :)

Music history is always so beautiful, it actually makes me wanna cry. Also, it's funny knowing me and this man know Spanish even deeper than English, but I'm here getting his knowledge about a Spanish-speaking country through a medium that didn't need to be adapted for me. I happen to love languages too! :>

Glad you enjoyed the video! Surprisingly, unlike most neighbouring countries, Trinidad is actually English speaking 🇹🇹

If you'd like to read more, I can highly recommend Kim Johnston's book; The Illustrated Story of Pan, which is liked in the description.

Is part 2 available? I thoroughly enjoyed part one of the documentary. I teach steel pans at my school and am trying to introduce more of the pans' history and then focus on learning songs. This was great!

Lennox Pierre was the exception in that he was trained in classical music and made an invaluable contribution to develop the musical skills of pan players.

I hope this documentary doesn't excluded the history significance of the steel pan. The rebellion of the African slaves that were forbidden to use their drums upon arrival to the Caribbean led to the invention of the steelpan through paint pans, aluminum tins, and zinc cans. Drumming was used as a form of communication among the enslaved Africans and was subsequently outlawed by the British colonial government in 1883. It was tool used by slaves efforts towards freedom.
