If you ever want to get that chassis saver in the boxed part of your frame when your spraying. get a friend to blow air with a separate compressor down the box in the same direction as your spraying, and use a larger tip on the gun. You can also use that chassis saver as a primer if your going to use monstaliner on the cab and box. Great Job ! did mine a few years ago and is still holding up great.

I'm just finishing up my Sierra after working on it for months ! Your correct when you say that it's difficult to get all the rust off. The problem with rust is that it grows at 2000psi so, if you don't have a coating that has an adhesion level off over 2000psi, the rust will grow under it and push it off. This also applies to any rust left on the surface and covered by a coating, any moisture gets to the rust and it starts to grow. I also used Chassis Saver, I usually use Por15 but due to having mixed results I figured I'd try Chassis Saver. For the nooks and crannies, that I couldn't do any prep work on or the areas I couldn't prep to my liking, used Eastwood's Internal frame coating, if it still above the application temperature in your neck of the wood, I would high recommend still doing it as you really don't want those hard to reach areas rusting out on you. For the front and rear fuel tank supports, I used a hand held powered sewer snake ( rotor rooter ) with some pieces of cable fastened to the end, for running through the chassis support cross tubes then sprayed with the Internal Frame coating. After doing everything I'll also be applying Fluid Film once every year in the fall for a little added protection as, I don't want to do this again, I'm getting too old !

I am currently working on a 2001 chevy truck. I found it is best to sand blast. Then scuff the frame with a 3m scratch pad. Clean with prep all. Then prime then paint with chassis saver. The results with this process is really impressive. Good luck.

Hey Truck Master. I cleaned and power washed the frame and underbody of my 1989 K5 Blazer. I sprayed Eastwood s rust seal into the rocker and quarter panels. The one product I liked was Wax oil inner panel and underbody. You can also spray the frame.

Looking good. Not sure how or who is going to paint the truck for you but I'd put the bed on blocks and sand it down to bare metal. I know you said you're going to get Line-X type finish for the bed and the bed rails. If you're not going to paint the truck yourself, it might be worth taking the bed to the body shop so they can paint it and the back of the cab. Save time, aggrivation, and, most importantly, money!!! Keep plugging away at it!!! Have a blessed day all!!!

In germany we use wire rope grease that we spray over metal to prevent from rust.
I just spent the last few months doing the same thing on my 03 Silverado. Only difference is I pretty much removed everything. I’m just so done with rust lol. But that is why it took so long. For the rear I removed the wheels, rotors, calipers, shocks, leaf springs, bed, bumper, gas tank, evap canister, spare tire & mount, exhaust, axle and the whole wiring harness. And for the front I removed, wheels, rotors, calipers, shocks, bumper, brake lines, fuel lines, wiring harness, upper & lower control arms, torsion bars, steering knuckles, sway bar & links, tie rods, body mounts, CV axles, and the front axle/differential itself. (I think that’s it, probably missing something though) but so basically everything but the engine & transmission. I didn’t completely remove the cab but did jack it up about 6-8” just enough to have room to sand and paint the entire frame. All of the parts that came off the truck got sanded down to 100% bare metal, not a spec of rust whatsoever then primed and painted before they went back on. The whole frame inside and out got sanded down to bare bare bare metal aswell then primed and coated with a thick durable coating. Like I said the engine & transmission stayed but I did unbolt them and jack them both up one at a time to sand, prime & coat everything around the transmission & engine mounts. All of the reusable bolts (about 50%) got stripped down to bare metal too then burnt oil onto them to keep the rust off them for a while, and the rest that were too far gone that barley had a thread left got replaced with brand new grade 10 zinc plated bolts. I was thinking about just replacing all of them but I waned to give this oil trick a try as I’ve heard it works decently but have never really tried it for myself, I mean I have “tested it” just by doing it to a few bolts then leaving them outside in the elements and that went well but then again they were just sitting outside for a few weeks. Not on a vehicle getting wet, dirty, then cleaned, and seeing vibration every day. So we’ll see how it holds up. After I got everything coated, the whole frame and all of the parts I removed, along with a few other parts I decided to repaint like the battery and air box trays and their brackets, I let everything sit for about a week so the paint on the parts and the coating on the frame could really cure and harden before I went all Willy nilly will my impact putting it all back together. It turned out amazing and I honestly couldn’t be happier! Oh I forgot to mention somewhere in the middle of this project I fabricated and then welded on some new 1/4” upper strut mounts because from the factory the bottom are 1/4” and top are maybe 1/8” if that and that didn’t make sense to me plus I am thinking about converting to coilovers and if I do they’d need to be beefed up anyways so might as well get it done while it’s all apart. If anyone’s still reading at this point, well thank you. And also if you are reading because you are doing a similar project the most important thing to take away is that you have to remove all of the rust! As much as you physically can in order to make it last as long as possible. Preparation IS KEY.

That chassis saver worked great for me and my Silverado. Glad to see you using the same good stuff. I am a personally a fan of the antique Satin finish as it looks like stock and doesn’t make any imperfections pop out at you, but hey maybe the gloss black will dull out over time. Either way way better than rust.

I bought my 06 Silverado new. I Line Xed the rocket panels on mine after about 10k miles I know that saved having to go through what you had to do. Keeping chips touched up and waxed will help with rust. I know it’s a truck but you have to do the maintenance to keep it sealed or you will have the same problem down the road. After you paint it I would rinse it very well in the winter after driving down salt roads even if your doing it 3 times per week. I had to do that with mine this winter. I had salt cake 1/2 inch down the side of my truck but keeping the salt off it and keeping it waxed and the chips touched up helps tremendously.

From what you started with I'd say it came out pretty nice. Only thing I would have done differently was I would have pulled the bumpers to get the rust that is under the bumper brackets. And a small tip for cleaning the inside of the frame would be a small shop vac to suck anything that you may have been able to reach instead of just compressed air. Some pieces may have been to heavy to blow out. Overall tho, great job 👍

Just a tip, once it dries and before you put the bed on go and scratch the parts that were completely bare meal with your fingernails and see if it holds up. I used Chassis saver and it's good stuff but if you put it on complete bare metal it doesn't bond, rusty surfaces are a different story that stuff bonds insanely well but when I painted my frame it would peel off with my fingernails scratching it where I applied it to directly bare metal.
@maxb22993 жыл бұрын
what did you do to fix that, i have the same problem
@zziegler863 жыл бұрын
@@maxb2299 Scratched and peeled off the stuff that would come off, and then used primer on the bare metal before reapplying the chassis saver. Haven't had an issue since doing that.

Good job truck looks good... I've done a similar process many times just like you did, it's a lot of hard work so I know what you went through. Unfortunately for me that never lasted about three years after I do it it starts peeling off again.I'm in the Northeast and for the last five years I've been using New Hampshire oil it's nothing that's going to give you a show truck finished and it is dirty to work on the truck however it completely stops any rust from forming again as long as you coat it once a year.

Good job love the build and all the hard work you and your family puy into this build. Honestly I would do the bed box next. And maybe line x the bottom of the cab corners and the bottom up to the bottom of the door all the way to the back of the truck. And then still you a small hole on the bottom of the cab corners. It'll help. Ive seen this done to an 04 silverado and still has no rust.
