Salmiakki, the iconic Finnish salty licorice, is practically a national treasure in Finland. In this video, I’m using ChatGPT to guide me on a journey to build my tolerance for Finnish licorice, rating it on a scale from 1 to 10-from the mildest to the most intense. Let me know your thoughts!
If you want to try salmiakki for yourself, here are some of the ones I taste tested available on Amazon:
• Halva Soft Finnish Licorice: amzn.to/4icrOO9
• Kouvolan Lakritsi: amzn.to/3D1kyV5
• Tyrkisk Peber: amzn.to/3ZlHR3d
• Boxed versions by Fazer: amzn.to/4eW7oWN
If you would like to support my channel by buying me a coffee, you can do so here: buymeacoffee.c... Kiitos and thank you for being here!

In Norway/Sweden (and I guess Finland too?) we have something called "Hockeypulver Supersalt" which is a kind of weird candy because it's basically just salmiakki+sugar powder that comes in a small hockey-puck shaped tin. You should try salmiakki-icecream!

Vote for salmiakki icecream from here too! People should try putting some salmiakki powder on top of vanilla icecream. Like that powder you get from those candy hockey pucks.

You can actually buy sticks full of PURE ammonium chloride powder here in Finland. They mix it with some other stuff so it can be sold as candy. But the challenge is to pour the whole stick in your mouth and not spit out.

Lovely videos, it’s nice to see you try all the different flavours! Finnish girlie here :) Most of these were not salmiakki, licorice is a different type of candy, not categorised as salmiakki. Look for things that say salmiakki, not licorice :)All the best to you and your family!

So true licorice is quite mild tasting and soft compared to true salmiakki.

Licorice is not salmiakki. They're completely different things. The term "salty licorice" is a terrible term, in my opinion. Licorice has nothing to do with being salty. You can mix ammonium chloride with licorice and very often it is done but you can also get just ammonium chloride candies (salmiakki) mixed with sugar and other flavourings which have nothing to do with licorice. Salmiakki just means the salt of ammonia, ie. ammonium chloride. It's edible and quite delicious but it does (in larger quantities) increase blood pressure and heart rate so people with heart conditions should limit their intake. 03:24 If you want to become a proper Finn, you tear the layers apart.

The name "salmiakki" - salmiac in English - comes from sal ammoniac, or salt of ammonia, i.e. ammonium chloride. Liquorice taste comes from compounds extracted from liquorice plant. Liquorice is often mixed with aniseed oil stuff to reinforce the flavour, or to mix other flavours in, like mint, menthol... or ammonium chloride. As a result, _some_ salmiac candies can be categorized as "salty liquorice" (i.e. salmiac-flavoured liquorice does exist), but as a general term for salmiac it doesn't work since a lot of salmiac candy has nothing to do with liquorice. Many of them are simply gummy candies with ammonium chloride to flavour them. Or hard candy shell with salmiac powder within, like the "Tyrkisk Peber" candies.

My recommendation for anyone who wants to try salmiac candies that have not eaten it before is to try Halva Salmiakkiruutu. Its quite mild and sweet salmiac candy and is not the assault to senses many other are like the Fazer Salmiakki that is quite strong. Then from there if you like it you can try the others and see where you limit goes as you can get quite strong stuff like Gifu (Sisu) Horna that is maybe closest I have tasted to the base ammonium chloride taste.

4:10 These were called Käck most of my lifetime, but they changed the name in 2006. Maybe it sounded unappetizing to foreigners, or something. Also, 1 to 4 and 6 did not contain salmiakki = ammonium chloride.

I'm Finnish. Soft black licorice (Panda, Fazer, Kouvolan etc) is my favorite candy by far. Licorice (a plant) and salmiakki (ammonium chloride) should not be confused as being the same thing, because they're not. I in fact HATE soft black licorice that has salmiakki in it. That would be the blue package you tried, I can't stand it... Haha. I'll eat them separate, or mixed in a very different type of candy, but that specific mix completely ruins both candies for me. You might also find red colored salmiakki candies that have ZERO licorice in them, they're just salty. Suggestions: Try "Sisu Roihu suolasalmiakki" (black and blue box) for some real salty time, and also Leijona Terva Lakritsi (black and yellow box) which is tar candy, a HUGE opinion splitter. For example I like it, while I hate "tar shampoo", everything about it is disgusting and I can't even use it. And my wife absolutely hates that tar candy even though putting tar on row boats and such, strong smell, is fine for her.

Plain ammonium chloride is the best tasting salmiakki. Pantteri and Super Salmiakki have the minty menthol flavor that ruins salmiakki for me. Out of your selection the diamond shapes are the best.😋

Do you mean licoruice or salmiak? Because licourice has laxative effect more than other and salmiak is the one with high blood pressure issues (more than licourice). Though, I have flimmer problems but I do eat Turkish pepper candies from time to time with no issues, that and the Super salmiakki are my two favourite ones. I don’t really care for licourice.

Try this approach. Your parents must have thought you to take your medicine as a kid. Where do you get your medicine, from a pharmacy, apteekki in Finnish. So go and buy your salmiakki from a pharmacy. This might help using what you parents had taught you to do. APTEEKKARIN SALMIAKKIPASTILLI SOKERITON ( pharmacist's salmiakki pastille sucar free) could be one of the products.

Little experiment, now that you have tasted salmiakki. Don't know if it works on somebody who don't love salmiakki, but: If you watch this video or just think of salmiakki do you notice like a fountain of saliva opening under your tongue? Can't think any other edible having this effect, just salmiakki.

I don't personally understand why/how salmiakki is such a "difficult" taste worldwide. I mean people eat literal cow dung intestine soup, pickled fish, bird fetuses and god knows what else...but salmiakki, a combination of sweet and salty, is the deal breaker here? Yeah okay.

Kouvolan Lakritsi is the best for me out of these, if you want to taste Salmiakki but not as strong, good ones are the Fazer chocolate bar which is filled with Salmiakki "Goo", the Fazer chocolate makes great combination with the Salmiakki, another good ones are Salmiakki ice creams, there are usually vanilla ice cream mixed with Salmiakki and sometimes licorice, the vanilla makes the Salmiakki taste milder, also dont worry about the tyrkisk peber one, the one you got is The Original one and how they are usually supposed to taste, there are some stronger salmiakki and licorice around but they arent sold in regular stores that often
