The Path was basically about her telling not to put her on a pedestal because she’s just like us(her fans). Her talking about stuff from the anxieties of her rapid rise to fame to stealing a fork at Met Gala(to which you guys have admitted to relating to) is her trying to convince us that she’s not as omnipotent as most people think she is.

This album is definitely a slow burn and requires several listens to fully grasp its essence. I also think this is her most mature album, lyrically. It is so introspective and personal (not that Melodrama wasn't, but still)
@jaydejessome36433 жыл бұрын
My initial instinct about the line “remember what you thought was grief before you got the call” was that she’s referring to a phone call where she got really bad news. I would suspect about her dog passing as she’s talked a lot about grieving that loss. Like, remember you thought you knew what grief was before that? You didn’t.
@clarak89843 жыл бұрын
yes !! and also that you think you know what grief is, until you get that one phone call that makes all the other deaths oder things to grief about, different. like the one phone call that changes everything and shows you what grief actually is.

Rewatching this and am in awe of your first take, loved the music but took me a couple of listens lyrically - was a fantastic lockdown album, kept me sane. As a kiwi this album is indescribable, as you mention it encapsulates the Southern Hemisphere's essence - the sound cannot be replicated or explained. The Te Reo version slaps too

My favourite aspect is the interplay between Man with the Axe and Dominoes. On Man with the Axe, her lover “takes her down” “clean as a pine”. This takes dedication and intention. On Dominoes, the man “flicks them down like dominoes”. It’s careless and cheap. The contrast is striking. It’s foreshadowed on Secrets of a Girl when she mentions how “you’ll fall” to mean fall in love. This really is a cohesive album to spend time with and watch unfold. Still so much to discover...
@Carolina-ec7rz3 жыл бұрын
I lost it the first time I listened to Mood ring, i was NOT expecting to like a song that much the first time listening. It has perfect satirical lyrics but with an important message and the melodies??? She nailed It, Jack did perfection as always, and the MV is aesthetically very pleasing also. Loved the video as always 💜

ok i have now seen the video, and here are my thoughts: first of all totally agree, love the album, it's that perfect summer dreaminess kind of vibe that's just not intended to be like dance/pop/drums/edgy stuff. to me it's in the same universe as like Seven from folklore. i cannot tolerate big star slander.... i lost my dog when i was like 12 and i just cannot even make it past the first two lines of big star without crying. i can't listen to the song, but i also can't not think of it as a masterpiece. does that exist? like the song is Perfection but i also physically cannot listen to it. i love that oceanic feeling sounds like summer in the southern hemisphere bc what is so weird is that - in late august (i'm up in chicago area so summer here) i was listening to the album and my window was cracked and i had this strange feeling- paused oceanic feeling- and the sound of the cicadas did not stop. it was just the soundtrack of summer. that's what summer here sounds like too. granted there's less water here in the geographic center of the US (D:) but the dreamy heat and cicadas and vibeyness is all there. I actually emailed Lorde abt it bc it was such a magical moment lol- the cicadas outside my window just matching the ones in the song. i think fallen fruit is a masterpiece personally. i love that there is this weird tension between like - the mood ring/fallen fruit vibes of "lets escape" (also leader of a new regime) "lets do a lot of crystals" "lets wear psychedelic flowers" and all these "wellness" or "wealthy" responses to the collapse of the planet- some critiqued, some not. i love that lorde doesn't try to give us actually effective stuff re the climate change. it's not supposed to be a "heres what we need to do". she said "i'm not your savior." she said "i'm dreaming of escape too." (but also the environmentally sustainable way she went about doing merch and the album itself speaks volumes, good for her tbh.) all in all, a masterpiece album tbh. it makes me want to make the weird art that only i would like. the music that blends my favorite artists in a way that literally only i am interested in, if that makes sense. makes me want to make like embroidery series based on that niche children's series i'm still obsessed with. that's how i know a really good piece of art: it invites you not to copy it, but to go do something that lights a similar fire in your heart. i'm so excited to see how she continues to grow and change and do music now that she's sort of free from the constraints of what's popular or whats trendy in music. ty for this gorgeous vid!! and hope you find your sd card, that's so frustrating- they are so little and they get lost so easily. i'm sure it will turn up.

I absolutely knew what she meant by,‘remember what you thought was grief before you got the call’ the first time i heard the lyric. I had my dad’s phone, my cousin called but I didn’t pick up. He called again, I picked up and he just blurted that his dad(my uncle) got a heart attack(he passed that day)I couldn’t even tell him anything and ran to my dad. I thunk the line means we think we know grief when we lose random things, but when you grt that call, that’s when you realise what it actually feels like.

; I G Y 6 As a '60's baby from the UK. I sat, with my headphones on, in the dark, already open to what was coming next. Solar Power hinted at it, Stoned at The Nail Salon nibbled at it, and Mood Ring winked at it. With each, and EVERY song, Ella confirmed it for me. This album, in all it's nooks and crannies, is a thank you. It's a love letter to every person who raised her, and quite literally, every musician who raised her Mum and Dad. The vast majority of her loyal fans are not my age. Their sonic emotional journey through life is not that of me, my contemporaries or her Mum and Dad. But, they're going to absolutely ADORE Ella for introducing them to the music that storied her childhood, that shaped her musical sensibilities, that made her feel safe. Thank you Ella, thank you Mr. O' Connor and thank you Ms. Yellich. Author CJW in NZ 20/08/21
