I use my own chatterbaits as well as manufactured ones. Having the split ring does make a difference in the buzz it creates that I'm not that fond of, so I started taking stuff like the Live Target Hollow Body Craw jig and using a punch and hammer and bending out the hook eye just enough to get a blade through it, then closing it back up. It works really well. There's a bunch of swimbait jig heads you can do it with as well, so its fun to play around with.

I caught my 4lb 10oz PB smallie while bottom hopping the Stealth Blade with a 3.5" Spunk Shad at sunset. I didn't even have the rod in my hand! I set my trolling motor on low & set the rod down to drag it along bottom behind me while I put all my gear away. I was going just fast enough for the rod tip to load up & make it hop every few seconds. All the sudden the rod doubled over & my drag started screaming, I dove for the rod so quick I almost fell off the boat 🤣 Absolute tank of a smallie, shattering my 3lb 10oz PB by a solid pound!

Having a glass rod with braid to leader is an absolute game changer. You feel the bait vibrating so hard and you can immediately feel the fish hammer it and with that flex and Fluoro they have time to take it with them before you set the hook. Perfect combinations do exist.

Great lesson. Thank you. I found it interesting that you prefer the paddle tail Zako over the fish-tail, but like the Spunk Shad because the tail does not hinder the blade-imparted motion. I would think the paddle tail Zako would hinder that wobble. Maybe I am missing something, but those two preferences seem to conflict. I use the fish-tail Zako, but have avoided the paddle-tail. This was a great video; thank you as always!
@kirkblackadar72992 жыл бұрын
I have probably caught the most on the strike King rage swimmer paddle tail, and the hazedong second. The paddle is downstream of that blade and is at the mercy of that doing its own thing, iv heard of some guys using big paddle tail trailers to be able to fish the rig a bit slower speeds or if they are hitting it on the fall. I experimented with some normal tail trailers and they worked great too.

I first tried one recently and was pleasantly surprised. Most of the time it is as good as the Jackhammer with the addition of the wood guards. I love tossing it into fallen timber. I haven't bought more because I decided to try a couple other styles of bladed jigs as well, but so far they are looking like a winner to me. Like you, I'm nervous about using my Jackhammers where getting stuck in is likely. I lost one late last year and it soured me on that. A Crosseyez would still not be fun to lose, but it's a lot less painful and a lot less likely with that design.

Matt can you please answer a question for me? I’ve been bass fishing my whole life and I’ve never had this issue until recently..and it’s only with chatter baits. I’ve snapped 2 bladed jig rods completely in half on a overhead cast. They were both 3/8 oz. I throw bladed jigs on a 7’2 MHF. I’ve been wondering if I needed to go with a more moderate action? Do you think it’s just a fluke? Am I possibly slinging it too hard? Thanks for your time.
@titaniumcrayon30902 жыл бұрын
You absolutely must try a glass rod. 7’2 MH glass, use braid to a leader and you will never choose to fish with anything else. The glass loads up so well and launches your bait. You seem to just have a really hard cast but you never know if it is the rod. Leave plenty of line so the bait isn’t to close to the tip which could cause a snap before you cast. I will say with the right combo you don’t need to cast that hard, it’s all about form. So in recap. You can try a new rod, HIGHLY recommend one of shimano glass offerings. Slow down on the cast..leave some line out. I’m not matt or Tim but when I made a simple rod and line switch. It changed EVERYTHING.
@titaniumcrayon30902 жыл бұрын
That rod combination should work fine though, it could be as simple as a technique change.
@jayteefishing15432 жыл бұрын
@@titaniumcrayon3090 thanks man I really appreciate the advice. I’ll for sure look into it. The bait being too close to my rod tip may be an issue just because I get in a hurry covering water and I just don’t really pay attention to that too much just because it’s something I’ve done my whole life ya know and it’s natural.

I've had several very good st Croix and Abu Garcia rods but after breaking a few of them I now use ugly sticks and have never broke one .. If you have a heavy jig ... maby you need to kinda lob / toss it out and not whip the rod as hard as you can ... just a thought , cuz I've noticed a big difference going from a square bill and whipping it out there and then trying the same method with something heave and problems happen .. like snap lines rod snap , smack jig off structure... IMHO
@jayteefishing15432 жыл бұрын
@@danmack650cx yeah I guess the only thing that bugs me is the rod is rated for more weight than what was tied on during the snap. But yeah when I first got serious into bass fishing I had an ugly stick and it was my jig/trig rod and for what it was, it was a heck of a rod

I’ve found that the Yamamoto Hula Grub holds a great secret. When you cut off the top appendages… you will find that the remaining grub is solid throughout. When I placed this on a chatter bait as a trailer… the twin tailed movement of the grub was one of the best I’ve ever seen. It’s not an erratic moment so don’t use if you’re looking for that type of movement. But the unison in which the tails kick is nearly perfect. Given this information I would implore you to try this one out. I did not place the grub vertically so that the tails are north/south… only horizontally and the stability and action was incredible. I plan to experiment more by using a vertical placement… but it’s hand down my favorite trailer. (The same can be said for spinner baits)

Hi Matt/Tim - thanks for the excellent videos. Really help me a lot get as ready as I can for the water beforehand - I’ve watched all the Chatterbait videos incl. the underwater trailer footage. Just a quick question - I stay in South Africa where the Spunk Shad, Kamakazi Swim On and paddle tail version of the Zako aren’t readily available. What alternative (especially for the Spunk Shad) would you recommend. I have found one packet of Jackal iShad 3.8” which looks quite similar, but that doesn’t seem to be easy to get either. What alternatives would you go for? From the underwater footage video you seemed to like the Zoom Super fluke (very easy to get here) or maybe cut the paddle tail off a Keitech (also easy to get here) as alternatives for the spunk shad? Any advice would be a huge help. 🙏🏻

I'm STILL freaking about the Mini Max! Coming from a huge Jack Hammer fan I didn't believe the Jack Hammer could be topped, but the new Mini Max is a force to be reckoned with! I tied on one of each, a 1/2oz Bluegill JH & a 1/2oz Bluegill Mini Max, with a 4.5 Natural Gill Spunk Shad on the Hammer & a 3.5 in the same color on the Mini Max. Just wanted to see how the Mini Max compared, & it put the full sized Hammer to shame! I was setting the hook in a smallie every other cast with the Mini Max but I couldn't buy a bite on the full sized Jack Hammer. I know it's situational, it's early spring & water is still cold, there will be days when the Jack Hammer will out perform the Mini Max, but that day at the river it blew the Hammer out of the water! For those who were skeptical like I was, the Mini Max is truly a downsized Jack Hammer, they absolutely nailed it this time! Only thing I'm not happy about is they decided not to make the Mini Max in one of the best colors, Green Pumpkin Shad, so I took the skirt off a white Mini Max & threw a Dirty Jigs Crappie skirt on it & made my own Crappie Mini Max! Wish I could post a pic of it here, it looks so sexy!
@caseycherrington28122 жыл бұрын
I figured something out this last year. It's a budget friendly way to get that instant vibration without having to buy a jackhammer. You take a regular chatterbait and remove the skirt. Then pair that up with a rage menace style trailer, but rip one off the legs off and put it on the chatterbait with the one remaining leg pointed down. You cannot move that lure at all without it vibrating. I mean at all. I can slow drag that thing and it will instantly start to vibrate. If you put any other style trailer on it it will still start to vibrate faster like a jackhammer, but the combo of the skirt missing and the one legged rage menace style trailer causes this magical alignment that makes that bait vibrate the millisecond it starts to move. I am able to show roll that thing way slower than any other chatterbait I've tried.

Is it easy to keep your bait right on the bottom with a chatter bait or do they sink slow or rise up in the water column? I'd like to know if you ever tried the "blade aide" trailer by smash tech or what you think of it.. I use it when I want something different then a normal paddle tail type trailer and to me it looks great on a bladed jig. But I'm not a die hard fisherman and don't really get to "test" things out, if I get a bite I either think the thing worked or I'm just lucky. Lol..

I thought there was ANOTHER new variant called the "craw size." I eventually figured out you're talking about the Crosseyez 😅 Love the Jackhammer and Mini Max

Matt, love the content. Would you use a Levante EMTF with 15# flour for chatterbaits? Or maybe an 843MBR?

I have the levante diablo spec r as my go to rod. The tip is super soft and has great back bone. The tip lets them eat it and the bottom of the blank pins them. I fish with 17# fc sniper for extra strength but also that stretch of straight flouro.

@@snappyfingers7030 I don’t know what that has to do with my question unless you’re offering to give it to me…

Matt is there a technique your really good at getting bites almost all the time but just hate to do it for some reason..spinner bait is mine I can almost always drum up a bite but I just can't stand to throw it sometimes like a just want to wreck em on a jig or throw top water
