Thank you! As someone from a country without a lot of accessible authentic vintage fashion sources, all my vintage "style" pieces are completely modern. Also, I do get inspired from different eras and decades and working on fusing them somehow, while also looking "passing" in my everyday life, especiaaly in my workplace. And while I follow some youtubers who buy them authentic and even sew (which it's not something I'm good at), while keeping their look historically accurate, it's nice to get a reminder that it doesn't have to go this way and there are other ways to get some vintage vibes into my life while making it "your own". It would be nice to me to hear more about this topic here 👍

Loved the finished makeup look! I always tend to go a relaxed vintage look to give off a vibe without the full commit, but then other days I go full effort and love every second of it. But, I'm honestly too lazy to do it every day. I feel like I can't connect with the vintage community very well because of this, and imposter syndrome sneaks in and I feel like my style isn't "good enough". I have been rocking the same bettie bangs and winged eyeliner for 10 years now and I am ready for a change, but man, I don't want to go through the process of growing out a fringe!

I know there are some ladies who always dress vintage, but I think the vast majority can also be found sporting a bare face and sweats - especially on an average 2020/21 day! In the end you're only dressing vintage for you so you get to make the rules! But I feel you on growing out a Betty fringe. Although, I know Vintage Vandal does a great job of hiding hers... perhaps she has a tutorial on her KZbin????

There is absolutely no room for gate keeping and policing in the vintage community. There is no right or wrong way to do vintage. And at the end of the day, we’re all “copying” someone to some degree. We’re copying our grandmas and old Hollywood stars. One of my biggest idols is Lucille Ball and I’ve been known to take heavy inspiration from her, but nobody’s telling me I’m not allowed to do that. And on that note, nobody owns red lipstick and curled hair. Style of ever evolving and everyone is welcome to try whatever they like.

👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 This is *so* important for every vintage newbie to know! I’ve been wearing vintage since I was a teenager. I started off by borrowing some of my mom’s clothes, but we were constantly thrifting and going to yard sales so I was able to try out different styles often. I definitely wore more mainstream clothing when I was in public school, but that was primarily because I didn’t want boys looking at me. 😬 I’ve always been more interested in gothic styles, so I started buying things that fit that aesthetic and mixing it with the clothes I already had. As I got older I accumulated more vintage and vintage inspired pieces, which allowed me to get rid of modern clothing that I didn’t enjoy. Fashion is absolutely a form of creative expression! The way you carry yourself, the confidence clothes can give you if you’re comfortable with how you look makes the difference. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve worn clothing that is out of my comfort zone (out of my typical style) and then received many compliments simply because I wore it with confidence. My style is still a blend of modern and vintage, but I enjoy it so much. My clothes make me feel powerful, confident, and just generally happy, which is how it should be. 🖤

Agree. Fashion is a very personal way of expressing yourself. As such, no one, that is no one has any say in how you should carry yourself. Creativity is always there to guide you, and there should be no boundaries... My very personal opinion. On the other end, very grateful, for what you and other beautiful ladies in the "vintage" community do to keep us inspired every day. I personally love your 50s-60s glam eclecticism!!!

Hi Bee! Thank you for all your videos, I love listening to your takes on the vintage world :) This video though, has touched my heart in a different way, I totally relate to the "changing by mood" style and with feeling odd starting a new way of express myself with my clothes. When I started dressing vintage I was sooo concious about the stares, even when there were none! haha. I've always loved the 40's, specially turbans, but at that time I coudn't get myself to wear more than a thin headband... You should see me now! rocking huge colorful turbans with flowers on the knot, and yes, people stare and people say things, but most of the time are compliments! and when not, I just feel proud and empowered. I'ts ok that they don't like how I dress, as you say, I don't like how they dress either ;P And this has been a long difficult road for me and my selflove, and I feel that, finally, the way I dress resonates with my inner self and whith how I feel every day, the best feeling! ···Sorry about my english, not a native here :) ····

I was a precocious fashionista. Born in 1942 I played dress ups with my mother's 1930s clothes as a little girl. At age eight I was a total Coco Chanel fan. I had to have sailor collar dresses - and a Chanel suit! Yes! A 'cardigan' jacket and A line skirt suit sewn in sky blue corduroy. By 1952 at age ten I had discovered Victory Rolls for my hair style. Then the next year it was marcel waves. I thought it rather strange that my peer group thought this odd. Their problem! Elizabeth

Loved everything about this! Lavender/purple eyeshadow looks so amazing on brown eyes. The worst thing about the gatekeepy people is that they expect everyone in the community to dress in true vintage all the time. Not everyone has the resources to do and + vintage reproduction brands are killing it.

Love this video! I've been doing vintage style for over 10 years now. Started off slow trying a couple things, and my style has evolved a lot since then. I still switch and mix things up a lot too. There will always be haters and vintage fashion police, but I learned a while ago to ignore them and just be me. Like you said, it is truly all about what you are comfortable wearing and how you carry it. Damn what anyone else thinks!

This was great video and important topic to talk about. I am 51 now and been "dressing in vintage" from 1981 since when I was 11.I was raised by my grandmom who is my biggest inspiration and role model of how to be a lady and she had a big wardrope of 40's and 50's clothes that fit me and she gave all to me so I started to wear them daily. In 1981 I found band The Bobbers from Sweden and here in Finland were in that time a big rockabilly community so there were many others to hang out with in our neighborhood and listen to music, play and learn with our personal styles. My personal style has always been more of a casual everyday style of 40's and 50's with shirt dresses or blouses and skirts and I use very mild or no other make up at all but must have that red lipstick every day and my stubborn hair I wear in bun or ponytail. My friends and family are so used to my style that if I would wear something modern, they would think that there is something seriously wrong with me 😁 I have to say it is really stupid to judge someone elses style, you should encourage them and give a big thumbs up. I buy my clothes from thrift shops, online or sew them myself.

Personaly I love dressing authentic 1940s, like I was a 1940s tile traveller and I arrived in 2021. But I'm a student on a budget and I can't afford à lot of clothes, so I do as I can and that's what matter. I love how I dress, the way of my grandmas very simple and everyday life but sometimes wih an Hollywood Glamor twist.

As someone who is fairly new to vintage, but not new to niche fashion, it’s very interesting starting out on my own journey and finding excellent creators like you! I’ve worn Japanese street fashion for over 10 years and over time tried every subgenre and slowly settled in my favourite Japanese fashion which is actually very vintage inspired in its own way. This lead me to real vintage style. It’s strange to come into vintage with so much niche fashion experience(and community) on my belt as I don’t entirely feel like a newbie but I’ve definitely got my own style and am just working out how to adapt this into vintage! 2 things I’ve learnt from Jfashion which I am using in my vintage journey are: Research: learn everything you can about the basic shapes/cuts/silhouettes/hair and makeup signature styles. And then once you have that down you can add your own take on it. Going slowly is okay!!! No one changes their entire wardrobe in a day. Secondly: I’ve had to put up with stares and comments and questions for years and my biggest piece of advice is: Don’t take criticism from someone you wouldn’t accept advice from. As you said. Ignore the Karens. If you feel confident - you look great. End of. :) --- Thank you for this video! You’re a real inspiration to me on my own journey! 💕

This topic! 👌 But the other side of the coin to consider (at least that I've pondered on recently) is where the pressure is really coming from? Are these expectations really from the "vintage community" or what we think the community expects of us, if that makes sense. Maybe I don't use social media enough but I haven't seen any type of 'bullying' or any words or actions from the community as a whole to say "this is how it must be". I think it's just starting off admiring these people, and then it dawns on you that you don't have their budget, their body type, their access to vintage stores (offline & online), their ability to sew, etc. And you just get hit constantly by these images & start feeling like you could never fit in cos you just don't have those things. I don't think the community in itself does anything to put down alternative interpretations but I might be wrong.

I am nearly 6ft tall and have always been very self conscious, i have never dressed in a regular way and I wear more masculine style trousers etc as I have never felt the right body shape to be feminine, sort of use my way of dressing as an armour to hide behind, does that make sense?
@MissBeeTownsend
@MissBeeTownsend 3 жыл бұрын
Absolutely. I think there's a lot of people in the vintage community who use the way they dress as an armour or as a way of making themselves feel like they can face the world. Just thought I'd share that one of the tallest ladies of the Golden Age was also one of the most feminine. Ingrid Bergman was 5'9". I know that's not 6ft, but it was considered very tall for that time and she has gone down in history as a great beauty. So don't be afraid to shine! 🌟

My late mom was a teenager in the ' 50's. When the pincurl look was in. She had kinky/curly hair .She had to get it thinned. She got made fun of called Brillohead. I felt bad for her. She never got permanents. Have you done a tutorial. On those '50's dos. Where the back of the head is a border of curls. The center is lacquered down. No one on the net seems to do this hairstyle. "I Love Lucy" hair.
