SP gains not being capped is pretty cool. The highest I’ve seen in a single great sacrifice is 169 SP. Also more info on armored sacrifices, you need to use the buff to reapply to a fully healed unit. But because they can be fully healed to maximize gains still get them damaged and get 5 man heals with mend. On low level units that’s still about 100 xp

Really? I dumped him all the way back in chapter 9 after he literally couldn't keep up with my main team lol! Let alone how slow he is unable to outrun the ranged Elthunder/Thoron mages in the following chapters. Hell, I didn't even use Jade for the very same reason. I don't know how Louis is on maddening (have yet to test the waters for that difficulty) but he was legit deadweight useless on Hard Classic for me.

Can confirm that the Great Sacrifice text appears to be a mistranslation not a bug - original text is: 自軍・友軍の味方全員のHPを全回復。使用後、自分のHPが１になる。【重装】味方全員の次戦闘の守備＋１ Which should translate to: 'Recovers all HP for friendly and allied units. Afterwards, your own HP becomes 1. [Armour] *All units* (味方全員) receive Defence + 1 for next combat. It's only in the English translation that they add the caveat about 'All units healed'. Odd one for the translation team to miss, but I guess slogging through 90000 pages of awful support dialogue takes its toll.

Small side thing I've done when it comes to using the Arena. If you just jump into a Tempest PvP trial and auto battle with weak units to die, it counts as a somniel reset, so you don't even have to do actual maps to get those Arena sessions in for those last few exp points on units about to level up.

Another tip is you can have someone equip the Dawn emblem, have your allies unequipped their weapons from the item menu surround a enemy and just use great sacrifice and use heal staff to power level your units. Chapter 4, Anna and Jean maps are the easiest early stages to do this.

I did something similar in Three Houses haha. On Maddening, I tried not to exploit tooooooo much, but I did on a couple of occasions. The first was with newly recruited Sylvain and my priest Byleth. Sylvain would take damage and Byleth would heal. The enemy did it until I ran out of spells and we both leveled up skills that would have otherwise taken forever to promote. The other time was with newly acquired Death Knight and Byleth (Jeritza's Paralogue). We came across a mage with high resistance, so we were doing no damage with our spells and farmed our Reason until our spells ran out lol.

I did that on chapter 9 with Ivy, though I probably could've chosen a better unit to corner. I left Jean as a level 1 until I got a Second Seal, then reclassed him into an Axe Fighter before powerleveling him. It's such a waste to level him up as a Martial Monk with 0 speed growth, even if it's only for 9 levels.

maddening is maddening, but for everything else, there's skirmishes. keep in mind that the level of skirmishes scales to Alears level, and you can grind SP for most units off of them by bringing low level units in behind an overleveled alear.

I just face palmed when you said that Arena only gives SP if you have a bond ring equipped. Seriously, the SP system being tied to the rings is the single dumbest game design decision that they've done for Engage. A couple of people have pointed out that Emblem rings and bracelets unequip themselves in the arena, which apparently is like the Emblem paralogues (I wouldn't know, I haven't done any yet). I just wanted to add that not only do they unequip themselves, _they can actually be your opponents in level up arena battles_. I'm sure it was terrifying for my level 6 Boucheron, having equipped a Poleaxe +2 +Emblem of Holy expecting to face Vander or Alfred, to face off against Yunaka and Emblem Dimitri in succession (he got doubled and lost both times, naturally)

Not on Maddening myself, but man, i wish i'd known about Marth's XP sword (and similarly, Lucina's XP bow) sooner regardless; combine that with Lineage, Mentorship or both and SP gain would get exceedingly silly. Using them to finish off named units and Silver Corrupted would be a great idea too. They already give increased XP, why not double it, and potentially stack two 20% boosts on top of that? That said, cheers for the guide and Great Sacrifice tips, it's a great help!

yes, the footage is real. turn 1. no setup required. Boucheron had an internal level of 5 and most of the other units on the field were between level 8-11 (with Vander being the exception with an internal level of 13). each villager (6 total) is at level 5 + jean at level 1, so they aren't contributing as much SP as your playable units. got similar numbers from ch 9 since u have 10 deployment slots + Jade, who starts as a green unit.

Very nice guide. However, I feel that rotating the rings around and farming EXP is kind of over-investing in the early-game units, who get out-stated and outclassed after Chapter 10, if not even earlier. The recruits you get before Chapter 5 all have only 300 SP (except Vander), so they'd need to gain 7 levels before you enter Chapter 10. Honestly, the only ones I realistically see attaining this (without going out of your way to feed the EXP) are Celine (who has a lower base Level and is wearing an Emblem Ring when recruited) and MAYBE Louis if you give him the Sigurd Ring on Chapter 5 and let him hard-carry your tanking after that point. Chloe is in the same circumstance as Louis (same base Level and no Emblem Ring when recruited), but realistically she spends less time with an Emblem Ring than Louis prior to getting the Micaiah Ring, so she'd have to gain more levels (to offset the SP deficit). Then we have the characters who start with 500 SP. Among them, Yunaka is the only one I can easily see being able to reach 1000 SP before Chapter 10, because she starts at Level 6 and comes with an Emblem Ring, so gaining 5 levels is easy for her, especially if you have a refined Iron Dagger (or even Steel Dagger); in fact, bringing a refined Dagger to her recruitment chapter lets her gain a fairly high amount EXP from the get-go. On the other hand, Alcryst and his retainers can't realistically gain enough SP before Chapter 10, because they are too high base level and thus gain EXP and SP more slowly. Finally, we have characters who start with 800 SP, which are Diamant and his retainers. Among them, only Diamant can have the chance to gain the last 200 SP he needs, since he starts with an Emblem Ring and is recruited early enough. However, I don't see him hard-carrying Chapters 8 and 9 to the point where he gains two levels out of them. Oh, I forgot Anna and Jean, who both start with only 300 SP but join relatively late. Both require you to go out of your way to train them, because they are growth units with low base levels and stats. Jean is the one that can most easily gain 7 levels using staves, because he starts at Level 1 and comes with the ability to use them. On the other hand, making Anna gain 7 levels on her starting class requires a lot more investment. Maybe you can make her get enough levels to promote before Chapter 10, but I don't think getting Canto on her prior to that is realistic. I didn't mention Alear because I think it is obvious that one should let Alear level up as much as possible since they are a compulsory deploy throughout the story, so having them be a competent unit is the best choice. So, Alear can easily get the levels they need to get enough SP for Canto (and even promote) before Chapter 10.

I was able to get 4 units canter that I already decided to focus on, without doing anything but keeping these concepts in mind, so I wouldn't call it "farming" since my gamplay and turncount were barely affected.

I went through most of my Maddening playthrough before this guide was released, and got 3 characters to reach above 1000 SP prior to Chapter 10 (Alear, Yunaka and Louis), but neglected giving it to Louis (a pitfall, because I thought he wouldn't need it being used as a tank). So yeah, now that I know these tips I will be able to get two more units with Canter next time around. (I would not neglect giving it to Louis despite having enough SP, unlike this time, and maybe I could put a bit more focus on one other unit besides Alear, Yunaka and Louis so that they can also get Canter).

Is there an argument for keeping a character capped at level 20 to not slow down your SP gain? Staying at level 20 locks your internal level but allows you to keep gaining SP at that internal level. Of course, it comes at the cost of getting more stats on level up.

But in reality, all you need is Canter + [insert favorite skill], or just good planning for whatever two skills you want to get the most, so it's best to just level yoself up and get stats.

I get that, but it's still not a good reason. the outcome of arena battles are completely inconsequential. this could be fixed with a single line of code that read "if Marth ring equipped then no marth" or even auto equipping a dummy ring that gives no stats for arena. it's just an extra step for everyone that doesn't need to be there, and screws people over who aren't aware of its existence- which is a pretty common theme with everything having to do with arena + skill inheritance in this game, honestly.

well thank u so much. i got it from raisins. the whole video was based on me and my team testing to be able to get a better understanding of what exactly the numbers in your chart represent, since it's a bit unclear (im really dumb). I would've loved to be more specific with my data here, but at the end of the day, I think my ignorance restricting me to broad advice probably made the information easier for a casual viewer understand the concepts and retain them. @@Choops6969 haha don’t worry, I myself am not fully sure what these numbers mean - especially the internal level decay factor still no idea how it is factored in nor what exactly what it it’s even suppose to do. It would be great if you shared your testing results! Fantasticly helpful video by the way. A lot of this stuff is only what I have discovered very recently for myself too, great so see this so accessible to a large audience. Plus you have a damn sexy voice!
