A much more listenable rendition than the much older versions, even without the orchestral backing.

Her voice reminds me of Golden age mezzo sopranos such as Fedora Barbieri. She is much better than Rise Stevens, with whom this role is associated.

Miscast and terrible. I'm sorry, but that's the fact. Leave this aria to the real men who do this role justice like Ivan Kozlovsky, Tito Schipa, and Luciano Pavarotti.

Disagree--I much prefer the mezzo versions, plus originally the role was played by a castrato , followed by a hautre-contre tenor, then popularised in Berlioz's version with the legendary mezzo pauline viardot--historically never really written for full-voiced male tenors like pavarotti so historically mezzos are the norm for this role (very few castrati around nowadays) Musically I love the tone mezzos bring to this, this being a great rendition in my opinion, but each to their own!

this aria was composed firstly and originally for a castrato (Gaetano Guadagni). So , mezzos are more accurate to whom it was composed for, firstly, in the italian version.

@@vera_seppuku You indirectly admitted that it is still a man’s role. Women are not a good fit for it. Period. I say this as a woman. I respect that men should reclaim pants roles that have been wrongly misattributed to women, because they either don’t like the countertenor sound or they can’t find a legitimate healthy countertenor. Even if you compare the two voices, they don’t even sound the same to the astute ear. Listen to Russell Oberlin, for a more accurate voice. Sadly, he never recorded this role or aria but he is the closest on record we have yet.

@@emilygreene3460 castrati where natural altos, mezzos and sopranos. Just like women. Tenors or barones are not mezzos, neither castrato mezzo or woman mezzo. And counternetors are not even a natural voice. They are completely out of of place anywhere almost. Except for contralto oratorio Arias written for men in falsetto, like those of Bach, Handel English oratorios , Britten opera. And btw castrati where not "men" , but evirati, eunuchs, mutilated kids.
