If you thought full frame cameras were out of your budget, think again!
The Canon 5D Mark 1 is a full frame digital camera that's incredibly cheap right now. It shoots modern and vintage lenses, including Olympus Zuiko, M42 and K-Mount, and I'm not sure there's a better bargain in the whole of photography!

I have my EOS 5D and my EOS 5D Mk. II .. I have found out that Canon developed the sensor for the Mk. I in collaboration with? .. Kodak .. I still have my Kodak Box Brownie which my mother bought for me when I was ten .. I am now 72 .. I still cannot see a reason to get "the latest" in cameras unless one is shooting sports .. I shoot a lot of burlesque shows and still manage to get perfectly sharp images .. some of the ladies move quite rapidly .. camera reviews are becoming quite ridiculous .. to the point of complaining that the latest camera doesn't make them a coffee .. I really enjoyed your video .. thank you very much .. liked and subscribed ..

I have to disagree. It's fairly digital in my mind, but maybe that's got to do with how it's become over time (still I don't think it's taken more than 50-60 000 shots yet)? I've heard "clunkier" (i.e. better sounding shutters) on youtube. I've got two of them, one slightly louder (sharper) than the other. Still it's better than the 350D sound of my previous camera ever was. I much prrefer analog camera's shutter sound. Especially twin reflex (true stealth mode).

Thanks for all your information and the great manner you have in presenting this video. Incredibly helpful,as well as enjoyable with your informal and direct manner. You inspire trust as well. I am buying two used 5D1 bodies and really believe I may have found what I have been looking for in image quality and colour rendition. I had overlooked the 5D1,but now after some research understand the 12.7 mp count is no issue at all. And as you mentioned, how amazing that this camera can house scores of vintage lenses. I plan on using my Zuiko and M-42 lenses, and am very happy the adapter to house these lenses on the camera is minimal. A final thing about Canon colour, I've shot for a number of years and looked at a lot of imagery both mine and that of others: for myself I don't if there is more pleasing colour out there than what Canon has provided in their cameras. The colour out of the 5D1 appears to my eye the kind I've seen and loved, but never taken advantage of. I look forward now though to the colour I will see out of my new purchases.

I Started in photography with sony apsc mirrorless cameras. after a holiday where I didn't use my camera as much I felt like I needed something smaller and bought a micro four thirds lumix camera which helped me with the size issue. after a while though I started to feel limited by the size of the micro four thirds sensor and late last year I purchaed a 5D mk 1. My 5D is in some aspects my most favourite camera I nave ever owned, the images come out looking great, the grip is comfortable and the glass is insanely cheap. Okay sure, the 5d is huge when compared to my previous cameras but I've gotten used to it by now and enjoy using it enough to not feel like its size limits me in any way, I love my 5D and encourage many others to pick it up and give it a go

I had a Canon 5d mk 1 about 12 months after it come out. The issue I had was when mounting EF lenses. At the time I had the 24-70 f2.8, 50mm f1.8, 85mm f1.8 and 70-200mm f/4. My issue at the time I couldn't get a sharp image when shooting lenses wide open and there was no lens calibration built into the camera unlike today. It also used to suffer from over exposure by about a stop. However, I did get some wonderful photos from the camera and as you mentioned, for under £200 it's a great camera especially if you have a load of old vintage lenses.

Another excellent video. One thing to mention about the original 5D that "new" users who may look into getting one might not know about: the supplier of the glue Cannon used on the mirror changed its formula and, as such, in some bodies the mirror might fall out. It happened to my friend's 5D. It is a quick, simple repair that any shop can handle (as this is an older camera, Canon has stopped servicing this specific issue for free) but something that "new" users should be aware of.

First time I think I've seen someone use a actual piece of film and show the comparison between old photo and cinema configurations and how it inspired modern technology! And also kudos for the ASMR. As for the 5dii it's all wonderful line, but something happened about 2005 where canon really tried to make a camera to compete with film and get all photographers to move into a digital age. I've noticed many times the canon a-1 had the same kind of quality maybe because it was the first fully automated camera sold to consumers and they needed something to impress a new market. The a-1 was my first camera, by 2000 it was becoming a relic but still pristine, even today. I think canon tried to make both tough enough a elephant could step on either one and still shoot away minutes after, that is probably why my mom allowed me to have the a-1 at age 9, didn't drop it till I was 23 and even have several times since but still keeps going. Same with the 5dii I got almost 10 years ago. Though I loved the a-1 enough that I've replaced almost every focus screen I could with a split image focus like the a-1. I see the same now in my Fugi X and GFX 50s (medium form mirorless) going back to simple manual dials for most of the control I just wish they had a software version of the split prism cause a evf is nice for us eyeglass wearers.

I bought one last November mint condition for £100. This review is exactly right beautiful colours, excellent viewfinder and a gem with vintage lenses. To my surprise my go to lens has become the Leica Elmar 65mm f3.5 macro lens using a visoflex to canon adapter. Insanely sharp and as light a feather it focuses from about 9 inches to infinity perfect quality at every setting and aperture an incredible combination for the price. It also turns the otherwise deeply impractical Leica Hector 135mm into a beautiful and flattering portrait lens

I have just bought another 5D exclusively for colour work. I make an accurate custom white balance and then shoot in RAW monochrome with the sharpness and contrast set to the minimum. The rear screen is used for checking the histogram, everything else is done in the optical viewfinder. I then process my RAW files in colour, and rejig the contrast and saturation as I see fit. It is an amazing camera with beautiful colour - just great with vintage lenses.

Ive recently purchased a 5D Classic, getting used to beast as we speak!, it really does take you back to to the good old days and makes you manually work a little harder for that shot however, the results can be pretty amazing with legacy lenses. one tip on precision focussing...its probably a good idea to buy lens adapters with an AF Confirm chip, their quite reasonably priced and are readily available on the net … now just watch the prices of the MK1 rocket again! :-)

Nicest digital camera I've ever used. I do have a 6D body but it gets in the way of photography compared to the 5Dmk1. Pixels are large, so they suit post-processing if you have to do any. Easy on the battery too as there's not much electronics and a fairly basic LCD. Don't be misled by the LCD pics - they look a million times better once you get them on your PC. If you get the Canon Mk1 'L' series lenses you'll be astonished at the quality of images from this camera. The Canon 24-70L 2.8 Mk1 is excellent and I used it for commercial work for several years. The 70-200 f4 mk1 is the other Canon lens to get. That's all the kit you'll need, apart from maybe a Speedlight.

People thinking the 12 mp might not be enough should watch the comparison between the 5D and the 6D from Skyler King here on YT. The weak aa filter does wonders for the 5D resolution wise and gives the sensor itself a certain pop. I'm stunned how this camera produces nearly perfect jpgs, which made me buy this over every other D and camera in generell for that matter. The "low" dynamic range and it's tendency to blow out highlights also gives it it's own, somewhat "retro/film" (yeah I know...) look. Thank you for your work. I'm watching you for years on now and you're the one that made me aware of the world of vintage lenses.

After watching several reviews like this on the original 5d I decided to buy one. It is probably the best camera (and there has been many) I ever bought £ for £. My set-up came in at £250 which included the battery grip charger and 28-80 Canon Macro zoom. Some points I did pick up to look out for are the early ones had mirror problems (fixable) and shutter count ambiguous. The best advice avoid pro used ones (with heavy rubbing), look for later serial numbered examples and look for wobbly hot shoe mounts. 😉

Good review. I was a bit late to this one. Back when that camera came out I couldn't afford DSLR of any sensor size, they were so expensive. At that time I used a 6 megapixel Canon S3 IS. One of the main reasons I was saving up for a full frame is to get the full character of the vintage lenses I use. I think it will be very nice for landscape photography. The one I ended up ordering is the Canon 5D Mark II, which is very similar to that camera but a bit more expensive. Used, it still was the cheapest I've spent on a DSLR. They seem very similar to my Canon 70D so it should be easy to adopt to. It will be the first full frame camera I ever bought.

Thanks for this video, 3 years later I was thinking about picking one of these up for this exact purpose, to have a full frame digital sensor I can put behind vintage manual lenses. It's very helpful to see it reviewed for that exact purpose. My only worry is the longevity of the shutter/mirror assembly and whether we'll still be able to get them repaired or parts replaced, but hopefully the popularity of this model will help. I'd be interested to know if you've considered replacing the focussing screen, it seems EE-s screens designed for better manual focus (at the cost of being dimmer) are still available, and I wonder how much that'll further enhance the experience of shooting fully manual. I adore my compact mirrorless system, but this feels like the perfect counterpart for trips where I don't mind the bulk/weight and want to take my time with fun older lenses.

I have been a confirmed Olympus and Sony man for many years - and still love my OM-D EM5 and my A7 - but I have fallen in love with the Canon kit. I had become aware of 5D prices dropping, so went and had a close look. I discovered that 5DII prices weren't much above them, either. Only problem was, the cheapest ones were enormously well-used and I didn't really fancy buying trouble. I know that some of these cameras can go to fantastic shutter counts, but for the sake of a few extra quid, I think it's worthwhile avoiding the really hard used ones. Anyway, I'm quite happy with my 5DII and I discovered that an EOS-1 split-image focus screen will fit it, with just a tiny amount of trimming, and only to the tabs, not the whole thing.

Couldn't possibly agree more! There's some real magic in the original 5D. I bought mine new in the shop many, many years ago and I will never sell it. I worked with many cameras after that one, but I couldn't find that same spark in any of them... until I tried the 5DSR. That's another gem, but a tad more expensive :-) The original 5D still has some of the best out of camera colours ever imo. And I find the expanded ISO 3200 quite usable for black and white! Looks a lot like 3200 film, actually.

Just picked up one of these for AU$200.00 as a bare body with a charger and two batteries. Add one USB cable, one 32GB CF card and a "nifty fifty" lens and I have the nicest weapon I can imagine. As an oldbie my eyesight requires a two dioptre shift on the viewer, and the menus are simple enough to understand. This is the first camera I've used in over 35 years - the last being Dad's hand-me-down Zeiss Ikon 35mm - and a lot of the options took a little work to master. But it will still talk to Windows 7, which is something I required, and has been a great stepping-stone to the latest acquisition, a Canon M50 that I'll be using for vlogging. A fantastic camera at a fantastic price, and I'll never sell it. This will ultimately be attached to my telescope for astrophotography.

Great review thank you. I bought a mint example from a camera shop for £300 3 or 4 years ago which I considered a bargain. The very early ones had a mirror fall off problem but if you look at the mirror and you can see metal strips on each side then you should be ok. The only drawback I found is that the screen on the back is not very bright in some instances but a different screen was used on later production runs. I use OM lenses adapted to mine and they work well. I would recommend the K&F adapter as it’s better made than the cheap EBay ones. You can’t adapt Canon FD lenses without using an adapter with an inbuilt lens element. You can also find some surprisingly good Canon EF lenses for little money such as the 50mm 1.8 mkII and 24 to 80 mm. I can personally recommend the 5D classic and also the mkII which I bought as new from MPB for £500 with only a few activations last year, both are excellent cameras. Another Canon bargain that I can personally recommend is the 7D which is a fantastic sport and wildlife camera which can now be found for about £200.

@@zenography7923 I have used many brands over the years and tried many working in a camera shop in the 80’s. My main system back then was Olympus and I still have about 7 bodies with 20 odd lenses. I bought into Pentax for its auto focus and program modes for my wife to use but when Canon brought out the EOS system then that was it for me going digital with them about 2005/6. I have all my bodies about 11 and think 40 or so lenses. I have never regretted once buying into that system, it has been super reliable and the lenses stunning. Would I ever change, no not a chance. After watching one of your budget mirror less videos and reading the comments I bought my first mirror less the Fuji Xe1 to try focus peaking with my vintage lenses as it was inexpensive at £139 in mint condition from MPB but due to the long Covid I have been unable to get out to test it. You can pick up some great used Canon lenses for little money, the 24-85 at about £100 or 50mm 1.8 mk II can be had for £40 both are excellent. Chris Frost does a great review for these on KZbin but I have had mine years.

1. Adapters with AF confirmation chips allow you to use the focus points of the camera to see where critical focus is, as they would with a native lens in manual focus mode. 2. You can actually replace the ground glass on both 5D and 5D MkII (but not later models) to one with split-prism focus assist. 3. The following lens mounts are adaptable without adding an additional lens between the camera and the lens: - Nikon F - Pentax K - C-Mount - M42 - Olympus OM - Leica R Many more may be available. There are permanent conversion kits for Contax/Yashica mount lenses. The following lens mounts are not adaptable: - Any rangefinder lens mount - Minolta SR (MC, MD) - Minolta A/Sony A - Konica AR - Fujica X - Exacta - Practica B And others.

I had one of these. It’s a nice camera, although heavier than my tastes. The 12 megapixels are OK but a little on the light side. One thing you need to be careful is that if the mirror had not been refurbished, you may have to get that done as they tend to pop off their base as the cameras ages. Although I was able to just fix mine with a few dabs of superglue very carefully placed. Another concern with this particular version is that it does not have user adjustable fine-tuning focus. So if you have a little drifted post or pre-focus from your lenses, there’s no particular adjustment as there is for the mark two and beyond. Without going crazy the way some people do about this camera, the colors and tones are quite nice. There is a slight flavor of feeling about you shot Kodachrome when you look at the images. Not as much as most people make it out to be, and this cannot be reproduced in post today anyway. But still nice. And of course it’s really nice to be able to use my full frame lenses as they were designed for. This is certainly the camera that It’s going to feel most like an old time canon film unit.

Maybe a little late comment to this video, but as far as I know, the classic Canon 5D's colours are very film-like, because it's colour rendering (or what are they called, english is not my native laguage) was fine tuned with the help of Kodak. For example, the early 4/3 DSLRs from Olympus, the E-1, E-300, E-400, E-500 has Kodak CCDs, and they have a very similar colours compared to the Canon 5D. The only difference between them, that the 5D has very film-like noise/grain at high ISO, and the 4/3 sensors have more "digicam" like noise. However I love to use my 5D for every kind of photographing, but only one thing I did not like: it's very heavy, not too suitable to bring it to a longer trip - then I pick up my Olympus E-520 because it has less weight and more compact even with a 18-180 superzoom lens.

10mp? Sheer luxury. I still throw my old 10D into a pannier when I'm going roughing it camping, etc. I took thousands of decent images on that 6mp beast back in the day and they still look fine today. In fact, that was the first proper DSLR I bought and the Canon controls fell so naturally to hand that they imprinted themselves to me, so much that I deliberately set up the custom controls on my Pentaxes to mimic the Canon layout as far as possible. This is why, when picking up the 5DII, it feels just right. Canon got the ergonomics right in the EOS film days and subsequently.

I find myself going backwards on bodies. I'm from back in the film days. I still have my Sony a6000 (2), but I'm enjoying a Sony a5000 more. To get full frame I went to a Canon 6D plus added an APS-C 7D, but modern 24-70 & 70-200mm f2.8 lenses, along with a Canon 40mm f2.8 pancake lens. But to get that old school feel in shooting I went to an excellent condition Canon 20D for $50 from one of the NY camera stores. Right now the 40mm pancake lives on it. It feels a bit wrong somehow to put on one of the huge zooms. I am really enjoying the feel and the images from the 20D. The 20D still has a bit of those film like characteristics you speak of. I'm still want to get a classic 5D. The images I have seen from them do have some of those intangible film feelings. For someone who used to shoot a lot of Fuji Velvia 50 at slow shutter speeds that is a quality I miss in more modern DSLRs. As an old SLR shooter I do find a solid DSLR feels right in my hands. My mirrorless are great cameras and I'm starting to use vintage lenses on the Sonys. However, they never feel right in the hand like a DSLR. My Nikon D90 w/grip was a nice camera, but the Canon DSLRs just have a feel and great ergonomics that hits the sublime.

I mean with them adapters which I didn't recognize to use before. Some say, it will not works on infinity focus because the mirror will stuck on the back of the lenses. The other suggest to use such extender mount which I believe will turn them lens into such macro lenses if I put it on my 5dc body. So how do I choose proper classic lenses and adapters for my classical body? Tia.

Stabilisation is only really needed for slow shutter speeds, where camera shake would usually be a problem. In such a situation, vintage lenses can't compete with modern, stabilised ones - but in my experience those situations don't happen all that often.
