You can correct for that and also a tired O2 sensor with a potentiometer to vary the signal voltage. Mechanics have and exhaust gas analyzer to make sure you got it right. Also, if your cat is tired, you can remove the spark lead (safely) to one cyclinder and the unburned fuel will make the cat go red or even yellow hot. Red is enough - about 5-10 minutes. But have a fire extinguisher handly. It cleans up the cat without any expensive chemicals. On a gasoline engine.

@@MartinCiprez-l1b Ok, check wiring first and circuit carefully if you do the potentiometer. On mine, it was a 5 wire sensor, turning to 6 wires at the harness. It had an internal laser-trimmed resistor looped in. It was exactly 116 Ohms. So I used one branch of the potentiometer as just a variable resistor. 120 ohms made my engine run rich. It needs to be really precise. But the heating method can be a quick and dirty way. But be safe pls.

I used the straight double stack parts store defouler method on my 98 chevy. Worked great. Drill one out for the o2 then stack it on the unmodified one with the small orfice on the end, then screw the assembly in the exhaust

I don’t it just depends on the vehicle and the condition of the cat. Sometimes they’ll work, sometimes they won’t. If the cat is clogged enough…it won’t matter.

That’s strange. It could just be that the computer has seen the issue, but hasn’t seen it often enough to throw the light. A computer usually has to see it 3 times within a certain amount of runtime/mileage for it to actually trigger a light.

The straight spacers work fine if you put a piece of stainless steel wool in them. Don't pack it tight. Just a pinch of it is all that's needed.

I'm here, for the catalytic converter info, and didn't realize you did the 4X4 upgrades etc. I do have a Ford F150 4X4, but it sees little use in the back country these days. It's still all OEM, and I've always owned an ATV for back country jaunts, to myself living here in the Pacific Northwest of Canada, but have travelled to Utah to the many off-road locations, and have seen some awesome scenery in doing so obviously.

I am just learning to fix my 2001 ford expedition 5.4l 4x4. My friend and I had to replace the plugs and coils when another mechanic left my truck tore apart tools thrown in yard. Took it to OReillys and they put on the scanner but there was no code for the cat. We really think its the cat can we take it off and clean it? I really need my truck to run better so I can find a job. I can not afford any more mechanics just taking my money and not fixing the problem . I put a new battery and it started right up but had to drive with both feet because if I would take my foot off the gas it wants to die. Putting in the new plugs and coils helped alot I dont have to drive with both feet anymore but accelerating and climbing up hills is sluggish and it uses too much gas. I am hoping removing the cat and cleaning it will help. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I just bought a 2010 Accord ex-l 2.4. During the test drive there was no check engine lights, of course Now there is, the owner stated it had the same gas in the tank for perhaps 6 months, could old/bad gas cause p0420?

Bad gas can cause all sorts of things. Start with fresh gas and a fuel system cleaner to be sure.

That wouldn’t work. Because the sensor needs to read something and it knows what it’s looking for. If you pulled it out and taped it off it would absolutely cause a check engine light…

It's not looking for dirty air it's looking for oxygen. In reality your J pipe creates a venturi effect as the exhaust gases pass by the opening so the sensor will never see anything as the tube will have a vacuum in it. Good idea I just don't think you have a full understanding of how and why it works. Thanks for making this video.

Kind of nuts. This doesn’t always work on every vehicle…but hopefully it does for you. They got super smart with the tubing on more recent vehicles and it won’t throw a cat code but it will throw a “slow to respond code”. Meaning the time it takes the second sensor to respond like the first one on deceleration is too long. They are trying hard to eliminate the work arounds. But on lots of vehicles this works.

For a P0420 code, do you extend the sensor on the passenger or driver side?

That code refers to bank 1. Bank 1 is whichever side of the motor has cylinder number 1, so it would depend on what motor you have in your vehicle. At the same time, both Cats have exhaust flowing through them at the same rate. So if you have it for one side…the other side probably isn’t too far behind and will probably throw a code soon. Just remember though, this is for Offroad use only. If you are doing this in the street to cheat emissions….you are risking a big ticket and fines of caught. So it might be better to just clean the cat out or replace it. Replacing it with an aftermarket CARB approved cat will save you money over the factory cats.

Tough question. Depending on how bad it is…it could be. It just depends on what the state inspection level is versus the level of pollutants the car is putting out. So I can’t speak to that. It’s truly meant just for Offroad use. To eliminate a check engine light so the driver can see a light come on for a potential issue down the road.

If it’s stalling..you are far beyond this fix. It you are driving in the street you should have it fixed properly. The stalling could be a completely different issue. But it could be a clogged catalytic converter and could cause other issues.

On Nissan, if you drill out the tip of an anti-fouler plug so the rear 02 sensor will be pulled out of the main exhaust, it tricks the pcm into believing the cat is working

Thats a better extender for sure. According to the theory the longer the extender the better. Also, If you drill a small hole at the end of the extender the venturi effect will suck in cool air and dilute the exhaust further.

Bad advice.. the downstream O2 sensors job is to detect O2, not "dirty air".. drilling a hole to dilute the exhaust stream introduces more oxygen into the system putting you right back where you started.

Need some advice. I have a 96 ford four winds class c motorhome. The cat was stolen. The RV ran rough when i bought it 3 yrs ago. No engine lights on. Now i need to replace it. I hardly drive it. Can i just put a straight pipe on it ? I dont know if the o2 sensors were stolen also. It is expensive to replace and the muffler shop wants to replace with after matket parts. I would replace the cat with an aftermarket one. It will still be cheaper than replacing it with a factory one and will still do what it’s meant to do. Because it is an on road vehicle…I would replace it and be sure to follow the law. Fines are really big if you get caught. It’s just not worth it.

It could definitely be a cat failing. When the honey comb inside the cat gets blocked or corroded enough…it can fall apart and block exhaust flow. It very well could be that.

Depends. Honestly it could be an exhaust leak causing the code too. So it’s easier to try and replace things that are a bit cheaper first.

Ok I have a question , I have a 2017 GMC Sierra and the light come on and it seems to be running fine . Code says it’s the cat on the right side. What other codes is it throwing? I have a 2014 Sierra and am facing similar issues. I had 6 codes, down to 2, P0171 and P0430 - likely have a vacuum leak somewhere. I don't think a bad cat is the reason for your mad mileage, but something else is causing to mess with your fuel air ratios that messing with your O2 sensors.

Usually that would require putting the vehicle in a dyno with a software/programmer than can tune the vehicle for it.

it doesn't read less exhaust it stabilize the voltage signal sent back to the ECM and in actually the distance it spaces is more important than straight vs 90 if room permits you can use 2 straight spacers to get the same distance as that 90

Depends on the vehicle. Some are now programs to see the change within a certain time limit on deceleration. So Spacing it too far would still cause a light.

I want to do this except I want to HOLLOW the cat AND install this with 2 straight extensions AND one 90. On my “off-road” Lexus sedan of course. 😅

This only works if the cat is mostly ok and functional, just “weak” and not making threshold values. Your hallowing would be a cat delete which will require programming the cat out of the fuel tuning loop.
