I've actually tried the lemongrass chicken from Ba Le in Hawaii Kai and thought it was delicious and in addition, the staff was friendly and welcoming. Your review and comparison of the banh mi offerings from different places on the island is helpful for future reference. Love Hawaii Kai Bale!! My favorite is the Lemongrass Chicken Bahn Mi. For plate lunch I love the egg roll, Kalbi rib and garlic shrimp! So tasty! I also tried their chicken papaya salad! Very refreshing and the people there are really nice!!

I usually get either the barbecue chicken banh mi or the seafood crispy noodles at Ba-Le. Their pork chop with rice is pretty good too.

I have tried the Banh Mi from Bella and Ba Le; Prefer Ba Le as their bread is chewy and crispy, besides their filling.

I agree not all Bale's are created equal. Hawaii Kai location is one of the best. Same can be said for L&Ls and Loco Moco Drive Inn locations. Love your vidz Charles!

I never ate a Bahn Mi but it looks mighty good.I’ve seen my son eat them, I always get pho.Hawaii gouges prices, they have farmers markets for produce and they use imported as a exscuse to raise prices.Isolation as another exscuse.I remember Bale; wow their still around.👍😉

So glad you tried Ba Le at Hawaii Kai and liked it. It's been several years since I ate there, so I'm happy to know their quality has not changed. It's my #1 for banh mi sandwiches. I usually get the special (dac biet) with steamed pork, ham and pate. I also like their pork meatball (siu mai) banh mi (don't know if they still offer it. I didn't see it on their current menu). And yes, their lemon grass chicken is bomb too. Hope you will return and try their plate lunches as well. Their food, friendly service and reasonable prices are all on point 👍🤙💕

Excellent review. I've been to all 3 places and I too like them all. At NO NAME BBQ, they told me #1, 2, 3 & 7 is their most popular. However, my personal favorite is #3, their BBQ Pork Bahn Mi. *I applaud you for reviewing NO NAME BBQ even though they asked you not to film inside of their establishment. For another popular local food reviewer on KZbin, it was a no go for them with NO NAME BBQ... no filming... no review. 😬 Another place that you could try is Saigon's Restaurant on Waialae. Their Bahn Mi is reasonable and delicious. I like their BBQ Chicken, but my favorite is their Spicy Lemongrass Chicken sandwich/Bahn Mi. Actually, a lot on their menu is mighty delicious and reasonable. 😋

I've always wanted to try a pretty good banh mi place here. I've only ever had Bale at UH and a small banh mi and boba shop near my house that closed down years back which were both decent banh mi's. Cannot go wrong with them tho, its banh mi.

What about Phó My Lien? Years ago, when I moved back here, I used to work in the Smith and King area and the staff swore up and down about this place for bánh mì. Yes, I approve on account of their proper French baguette but wondering if anyone else feels the same way, also... are they still in business? Phő cereal... bàhn mí is AAAAALLLLlllll about dat bread dough....

Pho Mai Han in Westgate SC or Pho Waipahu near Pacific Market in Waipahu are great. In C-town: Pho 88 in the Cultural Plaza or Pho Cuu Long on King and River Street are also must tries.

There are no time restrictions for the restaurants now. But the situation is pretty fluid here. There are rumors of another lock down coming in Hawaii.

Aloha Charles. I've only tried a Banh Mi once and it was in the San Francisco airport, mine was vegan and made with only fried firm tofu and it was tasty. The donuts you ate looked really good, it seems like vegan donuts are the big thing nowadays (I never tried it before, but would like to!).
