I put a cup of muesli in a snap lock back with powdered milk for breakfast. Just add water. Salami sticks, hard sliced cheese and vita wheat for lunch. Loved your suggestions for dinner. I also take powdered hot chocolate for after dinner.

I always have porridge for breakfast (although I bring oats instead of those sachets, much cheaper, bigger servings and less refined), and couscous for dinner the first (and sometimes the second) night.

Also lots of add ons for noodles or mashed potatoes try freeze dried peas, dried mushrooms, plant based dried ‘meats’, jerky, dried seaweed, a few to simply add to the noodles and bulk it up simply, all available at Coles supermarket. Great video thank you, planning for overland track.

All great tips and have taken them all. Tuna satchels are excellent with a chic pea or some cheese win a wrap. Soups are great. Be careful with spicy dehydrated foods, over the years I found them a little hit and miss; I recommend going for something toned down a little :) just a preference.

Buy Mee Goreng (or any instant noodle) by the carton from Asian grocery store for even greater saving - you got to ask the counter staff. Also, continental rice variety is faster to cook in its bag than the pasta dishes and less mess. The gourmet rice range is pretty good.

Continental Bacon Carbonara, into a Jiffy bag, add dehydrated veggies, mushrooms and onion and some chilli flakes. When you need feeding, fry up some salami sticks cut up (non heat treated) then throwi in the contents of the Jiffy bag and some water. Only rubbish To carry out is a couple of Jiffy bags. Edgell instant mashed potato is just add water, I like it with dried shallots and some brown onion gravy. Check you Asian grocery for freeze dried veggies/mushrooms/onions. Great video

Snows outdoors currently have Backcountry cuisine for $9.90 a pack, free postage for orders over $45. Expensive but make a change from rice and pasts. Coles are now selling peanut butter "slugs", expensive but no jar to carry.

Hi Dori, Great Vid.Don't know if you have heard of the powdered peanut butter,you can get it from the health food section in Woolworth,its called PB2, the net weight is 184g with5.7g of protein for each 13g serve being at 55calories and its gluten free.Not bad might want to try it,packs light also putting in your own zip lock bags.

Thanks, great video! For the continental pastas, do you take milk powder and butter to add? Or do you only use water? I eat these all the time at home so would be great to take on the trail.
@tahliamoore11023 жыл бұрын
I empty the bag into a zip lock bag and add some milk powder (I think 1/3 cup milk powder makes 1 cup of milk). I don’t bother with the butter. You can add more milk powder if you want it creamier. I also add in dried peas and additional spices and herbs (garlic powder, pepper, chilli). Make sure to note down the liquid quantity (water plus milk) you need to add. :)

I am glad you like it. The expensive ones will be a little more nutritious maybe, but its all about being creative with the things you can find in the supermarket 😆😁 Plus, I actually prefer the cheaper food because it doesnt pack so big. Happy hiking! Which hike are you planning for? 😁

@@DorisHikingAdventures I've got nothing exactly planned just yet. Probably gonna start more local up here in Minnesota before going out on any big treks,. Start out small, work my way up. Maybe a 30 - 60 miles, something I can do in a few days. Watched the movie "Wild" which kinda jump-started this whole thing, but to hike the PCT, hufta. That would be great to try and take that one but being able to take that much time away from everyday life may be a bit hard for me and my career. Keep up the great videos, you've gain a new subscriber.

just started watching and wow, $17 Aussie for backcountry is a rip. The most I paid here in NZ is NZ$14 and you can get them bulk on sale. Brought about 10 when saw them on sale for 30% off.
@DorisHikingAdventures4 жыл бұрын
I agree it's a bit of a rip off. You can get some of them here for like $12 sometimes but i guess for me that is still too expensive when it comes to planning a long hike 🤷♀️. But if budget wasnt a problem, i would definitely bring them anytime 😁
@alphadelta12193 жыл бұрын
@@DorisHikingAdventures Snowys is an answer. Their online store sells the back country for 10 bucks. They also have ration packs, and postal is pretty fast, too. But as you said, buying meals from the supermarket is cheaper. If we take a peek down the rabbit warren, it is probably better because you can tailor what you want and buy for calorie intake vs weight etc.

I like to take some beef jerky but it can be very salty. What about making some yourself with a dehydrator? I know it's not a good idea to have too much sodium intake though. What do you think?

Great idea! I actually tried it for the first time for my Bibbulmun Track adventure and it was delicious. Wouldnt go back to store jerky 😁😁😁

Yeh bought a freeze dried meal from BCF, not impressed for the price. The mouthfeel of meat is like some flavored sponge. Glad your budget meal plan doesn’t require accessories like a dehydrator or vacuum seal. People forget that when you intend to hike in different countries/states you’re not going to have all those things. And unless you only intend to hike a few times a year or something, cost becomes an issue. Weekend hikes every other week will add up in costs. Keeping the cost down is a good motivator to keep going, especially when nutrition really affect morale/fatigue.
@DorisHikingAdventures4 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I agree, the meat is the worst hahaha

I'm sorry but this is total junk food with no nutrition. When I'm hiking, I need protein. I'm particular about my food especially for my energy levels. None of this food is for healthy eating.
@DorisHikingAdventures3 жыл бұрын
Hi Deborah, thanks for the feedback😊 I agree that it is not the most nutritious food, but on a budget this is the food I would go for, especially on a 7-14 day hike. For longer hikes, I would reconsider and do a bit more research in terms of nutrition. What do you usually bring on multi-day hikes? Would love to hear about it 😀
