If you use lava rock/scoria for the pebble layer it will significantly reduce the weight of the filter and the porous nature of this rock greatly increases the amount of surface area for nitrifying bacteria to colonize, thus making the filter more effective for its size and weight.

I have watched your videos on bog filters with interest. We have a pond here in NZ with a volume of 1000litre . After trying for for some years to get our pond clear I decided to follow your design for a Bog Filter I purchased a 100litre plastic drum and removed the top then built it to your design. The pond Pump is a Davey Pond 7000. Plenty of flow to which I have restricted by a valve setup to achieve the required flow thru the filter. The pump also supplies a rock water feature as well. Within two days I have noticed a considerable change in water clarity and the boss(partner) is very happy with the outcome. Thank you for the information you have provided. The only problem I now have is the disposal of two redundant Sponge type filters.

Well, so much gratitude for your generosity. I am now 78, an Australian living on Salt Spring Island, British Columbia, so the fact that this wonderful video is made by an Aussie pleases me greatly. I am concreting by hand my pond, so as to make the pond look like it is sandstone (not too bad actually), I used a 20 x 20 EPDM pond liner, underlay with thick carpet. How to keep the pond in good health was a great concern, ....after so much research...I still did not know the basics...and then your video, with all the detail I need to know. (my brain has no knowledge of these concepts so lots to learn). I am still building my home now, on-going project of 23 years. I have done so much of the work myself, with a fellow Australian carpenter working with me. We have done almost everything ourselves, so little wasted resources, hence making this filter unit myself is so in keeping with my endeavours so far. I shall have to watch your video a few tines, but really I am so grateful, and now I can also do my friend's pond next door which is presently in the most sick state...very excited to do this...I shall make a separate EPDM lined pond for the filter work....thank you

I have a 2000L pond with a mechanical pump and filtration system but it just wasn’t cutting it. With the space I had available next to the pond, I built a 100L bog filter to work alongside the mechanical and boy the results are AMAZING! Super clear water, I can even see right down to the bottom at 1m depth. My system works by the pump from the pond, into the filter to collect the larger debris and then into the bog filter. I installed this towards the end of summer (August in the UK) so I’m looking forward and hoping that when spring comes along the results will still be just as amazing when the water starts warming up and the algae starts blooming. Thank you Kev and keep up the good work!

All I can say is that it works. I made a small waterfall with a 60 liter pond and the filter according to your idea, has been working for 3 months, the water is clear and small creatures have already appeared in the pond. I use a solar water pump that works during the day when it is sunny and for another 5 hours on the battery, however the water is clear. I made the filter from materials I had at home, but the construction method is the one indicated by you. Ohh I forgot to put the drain valve 😆 maybe at the next bigger pond. Thanks from Romania.

My pump is a bit overpowered for my 250 gallon pond, so I used a full 55 gallon water barrel. I had to make two out flow holes 3/4" with flex hose each because my pump is so fast. I haven't even filled the barrel completely with rocks yet, only filled about half way and it works perfectly.

It is easier to build and uses less pipe. But if your pump shuts off dirty water will drain from the filter back into your pond. You can use a check valve but in my experience they don’t do well in these applications.

Thank you and thank you again! Your video may be the most complete and helpful and simple I've ever seen. And you also tell us where to buy the parts. I like cheap and inexpensive. Too often I see pond supplies being touted as must have and being sold for over the top prices. Thank you for the drain information too. I wonder if you have or could make a video about a short (1 to 2 meters, 6 feet) on the surface very low flow stream. Thanks again!

Thank you for your thru explanation and i am doing this to my pond!!!! My only problem is what to run from the pump to the filter, too many pvcs don't look that good outside, i am thinking maybe then adapt a hose, what will you recomend. I saw you had a hose in but not sure if it was just for testing. Thanks!! From NJ USA 🇺🇸
@Ozponds2 жыл бұрын
On small pumps I’ve used just normal garden hose. But you can get flexible pvc pipe in all different diameters. Then hide the pipe/ hose with rocks and plants.

@@Ozponds thank you so much 💓 im so glad i found your channel!!! Never seen this and so well explained. I've done mechanical filters but inside the pond. This weekend im doing two of your methods im so excited! I started with 6 fish 3 yrs ago and now theres like 40! But have pea color water. The pond was here when i bought the house, it's in ground cement. Thank you again, this is awesome!

Thanks a lot for this video. I am in the middle of setting up a small pond consisting of two half barrels at different heights so the water falls from one into the other and a solar powered water pump to complete the flow. The idea is to have a few plants and a couple of goldfish. I was looking for an idea to filter the water and I think it is small enough to try a similar system using a terracota pot instead of the olive barrel

Like I mentioned below, great, amazing video... By the end, you showed how you clean... Just wanna double check... You don't touch the rocks at all, eh? Just open the cleaning valve and wash from above?! Once again, thank you!!!

I have a pond project 1300l, bog filter 180l. Adjustable ocean tech 24v 28w 3000l pump. With a little stream and waterfall and a bucket skimmer. I know its good to have lots of oxygen in the filter for the bacteria. I see you have oxigenators inside some of your ponds. Do you think I need to add a oxigenator or venturi to inject air in the pond or to the filter?
@Ozponds7 ай бұрын
I think adding oxygen is always a good thing. You can’t really overdose it as the water can only hold what it can hold. With that said obviously you don’t want to create a spa bath.

Hello Kev, I'm from Serbia and I've almost done the filter, but with 1-inch pipes. In this video, the drain pipe is the same as the supply pipe. And in recent videos, you insist that the drain be twice as large. Can I place two drain pipes in the same plane as the drain? Greeting!
@OzpondsАй бұрын
Yes you can have two outlets/ drain pipes in the same filter 👍

Brilliant instructions. I watched five times to completely understand! In the comments you say clean out the bog filter once a year, so I was thinking not to add the cleanout valve, just empty the whole container in winter, clean it out, load it back up and start again in spring. Are there any problems with that? (It'll be a fishless pond)
@Ozponds2 жыл бұрын
No problems with that.

Trying to find the right seals is a bit of nightmare. thought i got the right one from amazon too small. uniseal brand also doesn't seem to give measurements so it's hard to know what is right. so got a range...will see what fits when it comes. Found some old flexible pipe so gonna have a try with that
@Ozponds7 ай бұрын
The decent sellers should have a chart that tells you exactly what seal you need for different types and sizes of pipes. They should even tell you the size of the hole you need to drill.
@9catlover7 ай бұрын
@@Ozponds agree. amazon maybe hit and miss with uniseal in the UK. ended up getting water butt connectors so that should do it. Just raring to go. my pond is a murkyish light browny green. feel bad for the koi, had a cleaned a few weeks ago so it should look better than this

Hi great videos I'm learning a lot and I'm doing exactly what you're doing for years I've been fighting with building different filters and your ponds look awesome so I built a bog filter exactly like you did with that Big barrel my question it's been running for 4 days and it's getting a film of muck on the top of the rocks should I maybe rinse out the rocks a couple of times or all that film of stuff on the top of the rocks is okay please let me know
@Ozponds2 жыл бұрын
The cleaner you can get the rocks to begin with the better. Any dirt, clay, etc is full of nutrient that can cause more algae than you want, remember though some algae is good and needed. If everything is pretty clean then just let nature run it’s course, that includes leaving the film 👍
