Hey my friend I like your design. Glad there are people like you out there. I don't care for the hassle of mechanization if I can avoid it. This kind of design is EXACTLY what I was looking for. I have almost achieved compost sovereignty, lol, but I haven't gotten into the sifting game because I usually just top dress broadforked beds with coarse compost. That's worked great for me but I wanted to further my independence by making all my own potting soil for annual crop transplants and baby trees n shrubs. Thanks for the idea. I have two old Schwinn bike rims hanging in my garage and some half inch galvanized mesh left over from Fisher proofing my chicken coop door screens lol. Thanks again guys. This is perfect!

Nice practical sifter, my husband is ready to make this for our rocky garden soil. I know you, Gary, know the difference between soil and compost , leaf mold and humus, but very often people refer to these soil amendments as soil which it is not. Soil takes hundreds and thousands of years to to be made in nature by erosion of stone sand and sedementary rock. Thats why it is so important to build it up and protect our top soil as you are doing so well, thanks again Gary

I buried one part of my yard in 6” of woodchips about 1 1/2 years ago.....along with burying my sprinklers....I just tried to find the sprinklers and they were buried in 3” of new soil.....so excited over woodchips and what they do!!!! 💃❤️

Yay! I'm glad that I saw this, Gary .. your trammel basket is a lot more lightweight and manageable than the monstrosity that I was contemplating .. and getting that cart for under $20 was quite fortunate. The hard rubber wheels aren't cheap, if they're purchased new, but well worth it, not having to deal with flat tires. Best yet, I believe that I already have everything needed to build this, after the insanity of spring planting has passed :)

As a Dutch person, I was surprised to see the word "trommel" used in English. In Dutch, it means "drum," as in the drum of a washing machine, but also the musical instrument - I guess it's just a word for that drum shape. :)

Great sifter setup. An idea that came to me if the castors don't have the exact size to avoid the bumpy rivets, the inner channel sould be lined with some kind of tape or material to smooth it out.

We had a 3 acre garden when I was a kid. We found the stink bugs would 'fight' with tomato horn worms. We would put a worm in front of a beetle and the beetle won the fight...The beetles couldn't climb up the plants to get the worms, but they killed the worms if we put them together. Interesting find...

Gary, How are you attaching the finer screen that is inside of the main screen (towards the end of the video)? I'm curious because I love your simplistic design, but would like the ability to sift at 1/8 inch when I wanted to. Thanks, and great video.

Gary responding. Thanks. I don't attach the fine 1/4 inch screen to the main outer barrel. It's a smaller diameter cylinder that slides in and tumbles. This makes it fast and easy to change out. For the main barrel I used 1/2" by 1" cage wire because I had it on hand. If you use mesh with a larger gap you could make many multiple size screen inserts.

Gary responding. No. Here in Southern California the tree trimming service drops off a wide variety of chipped trees. I don't have a preference but leafy twiggy loads work best for composting over chipped limbs and trunks.

Ive been running a motorized setup w/ the same sized screen set on the front half of a hf cement mixer for the past eight yrs , gave up on the manual arrangements because it takes way to long to git'er done . Now if you put a motor on it ?

Thanks. I opted out of motorizing it for two main reasons. We have around 2 hilly acres. I needed something very portable and I wanted to leave it out in the elements uncovered so I could quickly use it. It is now 3 to 4 years old and is maintainance free.

Gary responding. Yes I treat the woodchips like the rest of my garden. Water as needed. Like planting a small fruit tree it takes a while. Re-hydrating will bring things back. In wetter climates extra watering may not be necessary.
