Cheap Rudder DIY install Ride 115 Kayak!

I bought a cheap rudder from China and installed it on my kayak. Any questions I didn't cover just ask!

What you are calling ferrules I know as swages, and they are used in sailboat rigging, but you need a proper swagging tool to crimp them, the tool looks like a bolt cutter, but with groves for the swages instead of cutting blades.

Man that's a nice kayak man.I have the same type kayak. This was a great video cuz I need to do that to my kayak to. One question. Have you had any issues with this setup so far down by the pedals. Just wondering how it work out with your pedals being narrow with both of us having wide feet. I had upgraded my pedals to the wide one. Take it easy sir and you have a nice one.

No real issues. Those of us with wide feet know we get used to having some discomfort. By keeping the cable to the outside it has helped a lot. The other thing is getting the cable length right. Took me a few times out on the water to get it right.

Mtn Way Adventures how you doing today. Okay no issues that's good to hear I was wondering about that. Yeah I know what you mean about the discomfort. It sucks having wide feet. I can't find Footwear for kayaking cuz my foot is so wide. I have to kayak barefooted 👣 so That's why I was wondering about the cable rubbing up against my foot. what section did you find the brackets? what are they called/originally used for?

It is made by MiTec and it is construction brackets. That’s all I remember. They were in the section where the 2x4 brackets and hurricane brackets were.

How do you like that rudder now? Still holding up?

It is. I did replace the spring after a year. It works very well on lakes but I found myself taking it off in the rivers. The rivers here are shallow and very rocky. The spring worked well when the kayak was pointing straight ahead, but if it turned side ways it would catch in shallow water if I didnt raise it.

@@mtnwayadventures9661 I just got mine in the mail today. Interesting note. My spring works in the opposite direction as yours. (We do have he same unit) I will need to pull the rope tight to bring the blade down into the water. I'm not sure this is ideal b/c if it does hit bottom it won't be able to give.

It was listed as fitting the ocean kayak on aliexpress. I couldn't find the link when I went back and looked.
