Cheap Steak Vs Expensive Steak - Who Wins?

The steak dinner is one of the most popular meals in the UK along with fish and chips and a full english breakfast, but what is the difference between a cheap version and an expensive version? I head inside 2 of the biggest UK restaurant chains Wetherspoon and Miller and Carter to try out their steak dinners to see who is best!

I do enjoy a weatherspoons but when it comes to steak ..miller's are unbeatable, ...tho I will say for what you pay in spoons , you won't go wrong

Ex Wetherspoons kitchen manager here. Steaks are always fresh, cooked to order on the chargrill. McCain chips, McCain beer battered onion rings. Tomatoes are chargrilled and the fresh mushrooms are cooked with garlic butter in the fast ovens. Good value food. I’ve eaten at Miller & Carter a good few times. It is pricey, but makes a nice treat. I have had bad experiences though, steak was so cold once the butter didn’t melt, that soon got sent back. The onion loaf is tasty, as is the wedge salad with the long clawson blue cheese. The bone marrow sauce is amazing also. If you sign up with Miller & Carter you get the occasional special offer as well, especially around your birthday 🎂

Wetherspoons is brilliant. Get a lot of food and it’s very good. And that steak looked amazing for its price. Miller and Carters, can’t go wrong with that, always amazing and a great variety of steaks. Glad you enjoyed.

Miller & Carter is significantly better but obviously it’s quite expensive. I’d still choose that and just go less often though. Whetherspoons in my town is basically a crack den with burnt food.

Apart from the venue and the delicious looking M&C tomato, have to say I prefer the look of the ‘Spoons one. That lettuce thing looked nice, but NOT on a steak dinner! Would much prefer mushrooms, peas and proper onion rings. Another BRILLIANT video, love the commentary.

With Wetherspoons you can just turn up and order at any time, you know you are not being ripped off. In their Kendal branch, I enjoyed the best steak I've had regardless of the price. And you can go every week if you want. Wetherspoons gets my vote.

I can't believe that this came up on my phone, I was in the weatherspoons with my wife in hownslow and we had this steak dinner it came with an Alcoholic drink for £10 or £7 with a coke or any other soft drink absolutely fantastic 🍻👌👍

Miller and Carter is AMAZING but the Spoons one looked fine considering it was a third of the price. Though usually when I've had a Spoons steak they haven't been as good as that one looked! I would also argue for a third option; Aldi's Specially Selected Rib-eye and cook it at home 😀

​@fanfeck2844 I work for Mitchell and butler, same company that owns both harvester and Miller and carter, I haven't had the opportunity to eat or work in either yet, but as I understand it harvester are a family based restaurant experience that are a jack of all master of none approach menu (not sure if it's order at table or order/ pay at bar?) I believe Miller and Carter are aimed at the higher end clientel as a specialised steak restaurant where its order at table, the only brand I know of that might be higher clientell based is browns which is full on high end a'la carte, they own many popular brands, including vintage inns the closest lower end to Miller and Carter I would imagine being sizzler group that focus more on steak on sizzling skillets along with other skillet menu options and also have various main menu options and are order and pay at bar I've eaten in one sizzler group venue that at the time was quite tasty

I've had both and miller and carter are the best it's prime cuts 30 or 50 day aged and you don't get no fat or gristle. But weather spoons one u get shit rump steak that's fatty and gristly. That's the decider for me.

Weather spoons did it right .well done to them .the person whom cooked it has experience is a value to the restaurant.. Price is grate and the sides are included for the meal as it should be .they kerp up the good standards they will get all the custom. Very much find with Wetherspoons depends upon the actual one goto and how busy they are. When as quiet as this one they have time to cook properly and meal always good. When busy then the cooking quality does go down as seem to be rushing to get the meals out.

I go every week to Wetherspoons Eccles Manchester for the Sirloin steak . Sometimes it is like shoe leather and two weeks ago we both said that it was the best we had anywhere , We had super perfect fish and chips at the Holiday Inn in Charleston SC 3 weeks ago, and the World Best steak and kidney pie at the Pie Shop in Savannah GA Marketplace. It is just luck Or Mazel , if you are from North Manchester, (And who is in the Kitchen today)

Well the Weatherspoons looked a decent steak with accompaniments. Appreciate they have their critics and from your review couldnt see a marked difference except a larger steak at the upmarket establishment. The wedge salad a nice option but £13 to £38. No brainer I'd thought . Think latter venue the place to go for special occasion but deep pockets be rather useful. .Lots similar Weatherspoon type eateries about do a decent similar sized priced steak. Great you can eat at these various eateries to formulate the best cooked meals although higher price doesn't guarantee the best value IMO.

I've eaten in many Wetherspoons, always the steak and I've never seen one that looked as good as that. Every part of that meal looked far better than any steak I've eaten there! Even the chips looked great, whereas the chips I'm usually served are dry and over or undercooked. Surely I'm not the only one who is disappointed with Wetherspoons steaks?

All the meals at Wetherspoons seem to be good....and thirteen quid was no money at all! Incredible value! You chose the dear one, but it was three times the price! Weatherspoons is above quality for what you pay. Plus the drinks are reasonable as well. Yeah you can get slightly more but you pay double or triple on the food and drinks. The quality is not worth the massive cost in my view.

I think I personally would have tried more than one option at the Miller steak House that was on offer. Reason being the cost difference on the menu is pretty different and some we're similar when they shouldn't have been. The 50 day Black Angus and the 30 day sirloin were very similar in price which made no sense a further price distance would have made sense. Would it have justified the price difference between the sirloin 30 costing 34.95 compared to the chateaubriand 30 at 61.95? Just my humble opinion knowing it would have cost more on the whole. I would have paid it.

we really need to compare places that are the same or close in price. In all ways you should expect a better looking food etc from a more expensive place. you can take 3 people to Weatherspoons and have change or 1 person to Millers. in the end it is a steak. it depends then on how it is cooked and not burnt by the chef

I lived in the UK for two years and never could find a decent steak or steakhouse. In the Southern U.S we have steakhouses like Ruth's Chris, Longhorn, and best of them all Texas Roadhouse. An inch and a quarter bone in ribeye with a baked potato (jacket) and green beans and rolls is my favorite, along with a glass of iced sweet tea. We don't eat steak with gravy either. I do like Wetherspoons breakfast when I'm in the Manchester area visiting friends. Never tried their steak.

Steaks can be another of those odd dishes... the "nice" steak house where I used to live was a coin flip. Half of the time you got a great steak. Half of the time you got to fight a lot of gristle. Of course, with my luck, 3 months before I moved a new breakfast place opened that offered a dirt cheap T-bone steak that was delicious. Plus extra points for the review for getting chips. I love a good baked potato, don't get me wrong, but when I've got a steak I want easy access side dishes.

A new lady friends niece worked for spoons for 5 years. She never ate the food. She told me some of the tricks they pull, I,ve not used in the last 7 years. Mixed grill the worst to order, save bits from uneaten food. My egg was so raw I think the chicken was still laying it.

I went to a Miller and Carter Steakhouse local to me with my sister. It used to be called 'The Memphis Belle' and used to do good food. I had taken family there for meals many a time in its previously guise. We both had very disappointing steaks. I like mine rare, but what I got was a mostly raw, cold steak. The 'side salad' was half a lettuce, (simply sliced in half, not shredded), with a few parmesan shavings on top. Bland doesn't come close to describe that. My sister's steak was like chewing a brick. I did go back once with a female friend to give them a 2nd chance, and the steaks were much better, but I told them they could feed the lettuce to the local wild rabbits as I didn't want it. Never been back since. That was about 5 years ago. Pity, as the place had had a very nice makeover. Just massively let down by poor, expensive food.

Last time I went to Miller and Carter the steak was fine but paid £10 extra for a lobster tail and it was so dry it was inedible

Wetherspoons is definitely value for money, but……and listed up Wetherspoons, the cutlery is always, but always in need of a slight polish, this spoils the experience and is after all just so simple, (dry the cutlery when it comes out of the dishwasher), otherwise great value for money.

I m with you on value for money etc. Have you ever been to Scunthorpe... it's where my husband's family are from.... and mum loves her fish and chips and eating out. Oooh how about ready meals from Marks and Spencer... hubbies dad passed away 3 years ago so she gets meals for one from M&S.... maybe you could review those....? Apparently they do offers sometimes...?!

M&S does have some good food there 🤔
