Here's a List - My Top Ten (No Order) 60s-70s-80s Cheap Trick The Stooges Aerosmith The Cars Lynyrd Skynyrd The Doors Alice Cooper Band The Band Big Star The Tubes ...and I'm missing tons. Hey..HM to Black Oak Arkansas, and the NY Dolls. Holy fuck..almost forgot The Ramones.

So true so freaking true they are definitely the equal to The Beatles but just the American version. Certain music facts just can't be changed. Whether u like it or not. The Holy Trinity of Rock n Roll not hard rock or pop or metal etc, of just pure RnR is Elvis The Father/Dylan The Son/Springsteen The Holy Spirit fact whether agree or not. Noone can be added. Elvis the Stage presence Dylan the skills songwriting, instruments etc n Springsteen is the only combo of both. Ths Stones the greatest Rock n Roll Band AND greatest show on Earth Aerosmith the American equivalent and Zeppelin plain n simple the greatest overall band in Rock music n I ain't even a hardcore fan like that but per commercial n critical success, money, Fame n the amount of classic albums from LZ 1-4 , Houses of the Holy , Physical Graffiti (an all time top 5-10 album in any genre of music) n only ended bc of Bonham's death. The Who best hard rock band. Jay-Z, Big Daddy Kane, Biggie just 3 of the all time greatest rappers ever with Jay-Z being #1 overall n in 2021 will go into the Hall of Fame first ballot while old as shit yet still dropping#1 albums even while changing his approach in the most fickel genre of music. He forever changed it. Just a bit of info not many know...LL Cool J in 89' could have cemented himself as top dog after a live MTV Unplugged performance but he slept on it n lost out. Jay-Z was smart enough to see wat LL didn't n knew that Rap/Hip hop for him would change with growing older for the worst for himself n others while seeing that his position was no different that a Rock performer meaning no more mega album sales with Spotify etc killing the last of the CD sales so concerts n tours would be major move but didn't know how. Bottom line he took rap from a live show that had no complete songs just medleys of hits no longer than a 40 minute set n no real opening or closing numbers or encores. Wat did he do?? He looked at 2 acts Springsteen AND especially U2. Talked with bono singlehandedly changed live rap shows. Got a live top shelf Questlove leading live show band. Learned how to make a proper full song setlist with an opening AND closing number plus encores. A flow to the show n how to interact with a live crowd while still holding his personal yet Makin it a fun loving different moods show so ALL races could come n not worry about fights or stabbinhs. Went out on tour with U2 as an opening act studied Bruce n U2 asked many questions to Bono n with no ego learned the game . Now Live Nation is practically RocNation....

.....my point is with ALL this CT remains the greatest Pop band especially LIVE. Beatles were Pop. Not rock and roll n Cheap Trick is the same. The absolute at the Pop formula. ALL hook lil verses , under 3-4 min songs up tempo upbeat n ear candy. Absolutely the greatest Pop band ever along with the Beatles

You know, it always bummed me out that Bun E Carlos never really got the respect he deserved. He's got this deep, right-in-the-middle groove (like Bonham) but then he'll bust out those crazy triplet patterns at the end of "hello hello" and you know he's got an arsenal of technique at his disposal. He just doesn't play it during every song, which is what I think is so great. The whole band's like that; brilliant and unpretentious. But above all, brilliant. .

Water/or a drink was thrown Toms direction…I saw another clip but think it’s been taken down from KZbin…you could see and hear Tom and this person having words and there’s a puddle of liquid on the stage, and Tom wipes off his nice suit. Which is why you’ll see Tom and Robin not looking to happy at the beginning of On Top of the World Too bad too.. such a great Stiff performance I noticed on this clip you can hear when it cuts…Tom says hold it, hold it…there’s water…crazy early concerts

This was recorded in studio 'L', a rather small place in downtown Cologne. The '83 performance was recorded at one of the quarterly all-nighters w. at least 3 different bands at the Gruga-Halle, a 10,000 capacity arena that has hosted every major band in the last 40+ years, including The Beatles.

Wow.. never thought about comparing Rick to Angus Young till i saw this video and I thought about it just b4 I saw the Angus reference, Rick is a great musical genius, Cheap Trick was was biggest thing in the spring of '79 without a new studio album.. it was an amazing feat, one of the great stories in rock.

Angus came first of course, ac/dc's first videos and recordings were in '74, Rick was unique... looking like a college nerd, an enigma in rock n' roll, Bun E. looking like an insurance salesman, Robin & Tom like pop icons, they fooled everyone and took on the world and kicked ass.. show me someone else who did what they did so quickly... not so easy.

I saw them in Albuquerque Aug. 14, 1979 so I be trippin' on this concert memory! Thanks to the others on this thread for clarifying why they stoppped dead in their tracks during "Stiff." At first it looked like a director's intervention. But if it was Tom reacting to water thrown on stage that explains everything.

Do people know that for a very short in early '79 that they out-requested all acts without a new album, they ruled the airways on their own...

Maybe the fire safety person tried to put out Bun's cigarette with a fire hose? Seriously. The text on the video says "Smoking forbidden in the Studio! The Fired department intervenes!". Anyway, great clip, thanks. Cheap Trick "mach schau" at the Rockpalast (I think?)

CT was always a very loud band, but the front of house sound mix is terrible. Way too much bass and even ricks guitar gets drowned out . This is a great example of their 79 tour show.

Maybe not, but when I spoke to Tom after their show at Norfolk's Scope Arena in VA., which was sometime in the late '70's, and asked him about his Thunderbird Basses, it did sound like he had a bit of an accent. I could be wrong!

@highflyingnote

I listened to the tape, and I think that someone in the audience threw something at Tom, like a bottle of water, and the engineer or soundman or roadee says, "Hold it, Hold it, Hold it, What kind of water.?" Tom has a accent when he talks, and that was not him saying hold it. I've played in front of an audience before too, and the only thing that would make me stop playing in the middle of a song is if something was thrown at me! What if it wasn't water but acid?
