That's unfair, really. fewer focus points means that you need to focus/recompose, which is highly prone to error. You can blame the photographer, but the fact is that the vast majority of photographers will have more out of focus shots as the focus systems becomes less sophisticated.

Tony, being a photography enthusiast, can tell right away. I think the difference in focal length was a dead giveaway. That being said, there are people who get creative and can squeeze way more out that sensor! Some apps from the App Store will let you expose for longer, they'll let you keep the ISO low, and they'll even let you shoot in RAW. So, with a bit of work (which you'd be doing anyway with the expensive kit), you can eke out a little more detail and dynamic range from your phone. So far, I haven't ever been tempted to print out my iPhone's pictures. However, a lot of people actually prefer their iPhone's pictures. Many people have complained to me that the JPEGs they get straight out of their cameras look dull and unsaturated. With a smartphone, straight out of camera they look great on the smaller screen, punchy with bright blue skies. Also, it's WAY easier and quicker to post to Instagram since they already have the photo on their phone. As phones close the gap, and look better on the small screen, fewer people will buy cameras. Even if technically less accurate, smartphones give people what they want, when they want it, and where they want it (on their phone, ready for a quick upload).
@ChristOurKing5 жыл бұрын
Most people missed the point. They're trying to show that you don't need an expensive setup to start learning photography. Let's be honest, nobody would spend $6,000 on a camera and then take 10,000 pictures just to learn photography with that camera. It's better to either buy a cheap camera or use your phone to learn the basics and then when you have the knowledge you can buy all the expensive gear you want. Some beginner photographers believe they're gonna take stunning pictures only if they have the best gear, but profesionals know that's not true.

I've shot both a D3300 (300€) and a D500 (1800€) and you really cannot tell the difference when shooting with the same lens under the same conditions. It's not so much about what camera takes the better picture but more about which camera makes it so much easier to take the picture you want. More AF points, faster speed, larger buffer, better ISO performance, easier access to functions through more buttons, tilty screen with multitouch, weather sealing, etc. - all these make it easier, but a much cheaper camera like the D3300 is still capable of taking the same gorgeous pictures as a D500 or D850. Of course, a D850 will produce higher resolution images, so that MIGHT still make a difference for some rare use cases. Gear does matter, but not as much as manufacturers want you to believe.
@jcproductions2225 жыл бұрын
I think thats a pretty cool idea. However, in my opinion, they 'handicapped' the d850 by putting a lens on that i would consider worse for portraits. In my opinion, they should have used a premium prime lense, like an 85 or even the 105 with the d850 to fully use the potential and maybe enlargen the gap between those 2. Btw when shown side by side and zoomed in, the iphone just falls apart so quickly, kinda satisfying 😅
@jnickmedia5 жыл бұрын
Was it thought of to shoot portrait mode with the zoomed in lens of the iphone? I feel that it would make it more appealing for portrait since the lens wouldn’t be as warped and you shouldn’t be losing quality compared to the first other than the aperture i would assume being that it is its own setup. Any thoughts on that?
@MyMuschilover5 жыл бұрын
One thing about the iPhone is that most of the time it's on your body and you can edit right in it to get your stuff online in a matter of minutes. On Instagram, an average person can't tell the difference anyway. For street photography it's very handy. It can take hours and money to 'make' a photo with a dslr that goes to my portfolio usually or for a commercial purpose.
@HughSansom5 жыл бұрын
I do a lot of low-light and macro photography, and in both areas, I see huge differences between mobile phone cameras, point and shoot, and professional. For example, there are a lot of things I really like about the Sony RX100m6, but it is close to hopeless for macro and isn't all that good for low light either. Tony and Chelsea have probably discussed this in the past, but lower-cost cameras aim for the area of greatest sales -- the average. So they do best in "typical" or "average" conditions. High-end cameras really prove their value in situations where lower-end, lower-cost cameras are often inadequate, which is why a cellphone camera may be more than enough for an average user. (My two bits, apologies if this is rehashing the obvious.)

if the d3400 was properly focused, compared to the d850, would be very hard to tell the difference. An 8" x 10" print is too small for the resolution advantage of the d850.

Just a note, Instagram will heavily compress images and video for the sake of speed. This will diminish the need for a more expensive setup. If you're trying to share the quality of a picture it is quite difficult to judge over a small screen. That might be one other reason people had difficulty telling which one is from which. I'd love to see tony try something like this again, but looking at each picture on his phone.

The d3400 shot was most likely shot at f1.8 on the 50mm which is quite soft at that aperture. It was also not focussed well. So operator mistake on both the settings(given the lens) as well as the focus. I cannot believe that in a controlled setting like that, you cannot do better with the d3400(which is a fantastic little camera more than adequate for 8x10s).

My opinion is that the iphone over manipulates EVERY photo that is taken on it. Do the test with a Samsung Note 8 or 9 or a Pixel phone and it would be a closer race. Samsung has a 44mm equivalent lens to use which would also eliminate the nose/forehead distortion.
@Fabio-rg9nv5 жыл бұрын
Stan S You should know that the iPhone‘s dual lens setup is wide angle + telephoto as well, 28mm and 56mm equivalent. Apple actually introduced that concept with the iPhone 7 Plus two years back. Really not sure why she didn‘t use the telephoto for a 2x zoom, I use it all the time, more often than the wide angle even. And about „over manipulation“. It‘s Samsung that is known for adding extra contrast, saturation and sharpness to their photos. Apple keeps photos rather natural. Samsung does the same with their phone displays, they calibrate it very saturated and make it look „wow“ while Apple calibrates their displays extremely color accurate. Samsung improved both photos and display calibration, it used to be extremely overdone. But it‘s still not great in my opinion. The Google Pixel photos on the other hand look very nice to me, way better than Samsung photos. But the Pixel only has a wide angle lens setup, there‘s not the telephoto reach for people photos.

Do you need a high-end camera? No. Can you tell the difference? Yes! I have great photos from my Nikon D7200 and old D70. I leaned how to take technically good photos with them and developed my eye for the art I like to produce. I probably don't shoot enough to justify an expensive camera so the D850 was a treat for myself. It consistently produces a better image allowing me to create more impact with the shots I take.

Maybe if Chelsea had used just one focus point on the "cheap" DSLR, on the eye, recomposed and used a sensible depth of field thing's wouldn't have been so clear cut; this test was just a little "too pat", considering Tony and Chelsea are "Pros".

Fun exercise! I sure would like to see a similar comparison between Panasonic G9 with a 1.2/25 mm Pana/Leica lens against a Sony a7iii with a Sony/Zeiss 1.8/55. Somewhat similar size and cost for the package.

It'd be great to see a more varied comparison between the cameras! Different lighting situations, different subjects (street, landscape, macro, etc). And maybe a better mid-range camera than the D3400.

I'm super surprised that the iPhone distorted his face so much - he didn't even look like the same person in the other 2 photos. I would have been surprised if Tony didn't nail it - he's got a better eye and much more experience than we mere lay photographers! Good vid!

Would like to see expensive lenses and medium format cameras involved in future episodes :)

Suggestion: could you do a head-to-head on the difference between landscape shots with tripod and without (and maybe better quality tripod vs lower quality). I'd be interested in seeing the results!

Yes it would be great to have comparisons of Cheaper lens like a Canon 70-300mm f4-5-6 for moving subjects with an L lens series. Because I am trying to take pictures of my dog running towards me. After hundreds of shots I can't get a sharp image. Can it be the cheap lens?

Would be fun to see the 42mp a7RIII versus your Nikon and see if Tony could tell the difference. Basically, is there a major difference with 42mp (besides huge prints).

I started with a cheap camera and as I got more experienced moved up to a more pro camera. There is a huge difference between pro and point and shoot but it's more convenience rather than ability to take good pictures. It all comes down to your skill level in the end.
