I know all this new equipment is great. My deer rifle is a 3006 1903 sniper rifle updated with a Monte Carlo stock installed in the 1960's. It has a Muller 4 power scope with no external windage or elevation dials,no internal MOA points just duplex cross hairs. My last hunt in Colorado with my dad in late 1970's, I took a mule deer running at 450 yard running from left to right it went down and slid next to a pine tree. So I think practice using hold over and windage is a must, this is where starting with iron sights is invaluable.

$4700.00 vs $630.00 and they performed almost exactly the same. 4700.00+ does get a "cool factor" rifle. Shooting side by side with that "cool rifle" and, at the least, keeping up with it, is WAY more cool!! Me having $4000.00+ in my pocket spend on other gear or hunts is WAY cooler than having the neatest rifle in camp. Great video. You don't have to break the bank and go into debt to have a fine shooting rifle and enjoy the outdoors.

Yeah I've had that debate with people. Obviously I'm biased in that I can't afford a $5000 factory setup so I built my precision rifle for $900. They are biased in that they don't think of themself as capable of building there own rifle so they argue that a $5000 factory setup is best. I'm sure their setup is much smoother than mine but the effectiveness is pretty much equal and I have the pride and fun of building my own from what I can afford.

It’s like having a nice new truck. Not necessary but if you’ve driven beaters your whole life, maybe you just can so you do. Also you can get similar performance, but with the premium rifle nearly anyone off the street could make every shot he made easily. Him having shooting skill is what made the cheap setup perform well. The money is for the guaranteed ease of it, and with skill you can be deadly and it is a hunting setup after all.

I love shooting my 22lr's. I learn so much shooting reading wind, dailing or holding. I always use wind flags. A nice Cz is quite affordable and fairly cheap to shoot, I think I shot 9k rounds last year. I also shot a personal best 600 yards last year going 7/20 on an 12x18" target. Oh, come on. You aussies are filthy rich and the rifles aren't even double the US price. Here in Brazil, if I still insist I want a decent hunting rifle, I'd have to US import a Tikka T3x for ~6000 USD, the same salary an average person make PER YEAR. The only way to reduce its price is by expending a total 3000 USD in imports that will get 60% import taxes + 25% "circulation taxes" (yes, we get taxed for moving products around) so it'll cost me ~10000 USD to pay ~2700 USD for a 800 USD gun. And I'm expecting it to get worse now with a narco-socialist in power.

I bought a Savage Hog Hunter 308 back in 2016 because it had a slightly heavier, but also slightly shorter barrel with a threaded muzzle. It's more accurate than I am so I see little reason to buy any thing better for deer hunting. I've shot it out to 300 yards and can ring a 4" plate so easily it's actually boring. Deer season this last year was closed out with a single shot in the field and a dozen shots checking zero at the range.

Interesting video...... The Ruger American is astonishing for the price.... it'd be nice to fit a nice wood stock to one.... If I could afford to buy one I'd probably make a new stock for it ..... But to compare it with over $4000 worth is harsh..... For hunting purposes, the difference in price is hardly worth it.... on the range for precision shooting, yes no contest, but that's not what the Ruger is for. But that pricey rifle is wonderful for either task, brilliant. OK...a bit of advice from an old timer (I'm 80 now) for offhand shots. No one can hold a rifle steady, it's impossible so don't try. What humans are VERY good at is moving something smoothly in one direction. So, once you know your trigger, start low (compulsory with irons) or high if you prefer with a scope, and with the trigger loaded just short of release, smoothly raise (or lower) the aim point, breaking the trigger as the sight drifts up on to the target. Even with my 80 year old eyes I can usually hit a 12" square at 150 yards offhand with a flintlock rifle with its slow ignition, open sights and rainbow trajectory. That slow ignition makes the above technique almost essential. Most of where I used to hunt (NZ) is country of the sort that usually means an offhand shot and back in the day when we used old surplus Lee Enfields and P14s with service issue sights and ammo, we always got our deer. More modern rifles with their better ergonomics and sighting equipment make things easier, sure, but I have found that many today cannot do 'position' shooting other than prone. There is a tendency to get overly 'scientific' about it and getting off a fast shot while standing seems to be a dying art. I usually get the young 'uns to practice offhand shooting with a .22RF where 100 rounds cost sweet damn all, or even an air rifle, and you have no 'recoil fatigue'.... although cocking a springer air rifle 100 times is a bit of a workout... 😀 Personally I think anyone that can't hit a paper plate 5 out of 5 offhand at 100 yards has no business shooting at anything living.... but that's just me.... a bit old fashioned I guess. Thanks for the video.... I like to see the latest developments in rifles and they sure have come a long way since I bought my first one in 1960 at the age of 17.... It was a sporterised P14 with a not-the-best-in-the-world bore so it would only hold about 4 MoA even after a re-crown. I had it re-barrelled and it went down to about 1.5 MoA with military ammo... pretty good as long as the loose nut on the butt did her job right.

I've tried a lot of guns in the low- to midrange budgets. Best value I've found is a Ruger American Go Wild. Spend a couple hours between polishing important internal surfaces and using a bit of aluminum epoxy to stiffen the stock. While you have the stock off and epoxy mixed up, embed QD mounts (and an arca rail, if you want). Stock muzzle brake is actually effective, but having a threaded barrel also means you can throw on a can. Factory cerakote is another big plus. Oh, and AICS mags are offered on a few. Add a decent scope and rangefinder, and I'd be comfortable with anything under 500yd with my .308 (but I'm eyeing the 7mm PRC as soon as it becomes available). Spend the extra on ammo, reloading supplies, and time in the woods/range.

Love these reviews. These have been done time and time again (by you, by me, buy heaps of people), and the results are invariably similar. The cheaper rifles definitely have their place, and they are perfectly functional and fit for purpose. I can understand someone purchasing a high end rifle for those big once-in-a-lifetime trips, and each to their own. I use almost exclusively HOWA 1500 rifles, and I have never had an issue, and they can be somewhat forgiving in terms of what ammo you feed them. A bit of load testing/development will give most rifles something they can shoot; throw on a decent optic, then it’s up to the “nut behind the butt”, which is the biggest variable of all. And, lastly, those big dollar setups tend to make a far worse sound when dropped or knocked over, and tend to suffer more damage. Just my thoughts. Cheers from Down Under.

Good luck finding a smoother action, guaranteed sub moa, fluted barrel, super light weight and ridge stock, cerakote camo finish over an all stainless steel barrel and action, has a removable magazine, comes with a threaded barrel, amazing trigger out of the box, what more could you ask for? I've personally taken it out to 1000 yards with no problem. I honestly wouldn't trade it for anything.

This makes me wonder, if some version of the Pareto principle (also called the "80/20 rule") applies. If 100 is akin to perfection, then 80% of perfection can be achieved with a simple setup, but striving for the remaining 20% to achieve perfection will get very pricey. 🤔

Excellent video. I’m closer to the cheap end than the expensive end lol. I feel like there’s never much talk or emphasis put on being able to make a cold bore first round hit at distance in a hunting rifle. The more expensive scopes and actions and stocks with decent bedding help. A range finder is a must. Sure a person can go shoot sub moa groups at 800 yards with a $500 rifle and scope combo but making a 600 yard cold bore first round hit within 3” of aim point is a whole different ballgame if that’s something someone needs to do. I have the Sig Sauer BDX system and it uses technology to give you an exact drop point. You sync your scope and rangefinder together put in your load data on on the app and then you are good to go. Range the target, a red dot appears in your scope where you hold and bang dead whatever. No turning of dials at all just range and shoot. Its freaking awesome. But you do have to buy one of their rangefinders and the scope so that does add more cost if you already have a rangefinder. So I can see the advantages of the Burris .

But you can buy a reasonable scope and their rangefinder for the same price as the Veracity. Don't know how the glass compares. I have a feeling the Burris might be a little more accurate because of finer adjustment BUT with the Sig you don't have to dial. I think the Sig Sauer BDX system is all you'd need for hunting at reasonable distances, the Burris might be better for those really long shots. But in the end they both depend on the data you imput and their ballistic programs.

I have a ruger American ranch in 300 blackout. The rifle is in stock configuration and I have mounted it with a leupold vx3hd 3.5-10x40 affixed to the provided ruger pic rail, a magpul moe bipod and a flash hider to protect the barrel crown. The rifle weighs 8.1 lbs with the attachments and loaded with a 10 round magazine of Barnes 120gr tac tx ammo. I have shot 7 different types of factory ammo through it including varmint rounds, both solid copper and bonded deer loads, hollow points and fmjs. Obviously I have shot some less than perfect groups with it that can probably be accounted to barrel heating, wind, mistakes on my part, and inconsistency’s in the stock shooting from my bipod. But I took the best groups fired from each of the loads I have used (since they show what the rifle is capable of doing with that load in the best conditions) and came up with an average group size of .970 inches. My smallest group to date with it is .339 inches and the largest I believe was 2.25. 3 shot groups since it was bought for short range hunting and I have no reason to test more than that with it. I plan to continue plinking and testing it with more loads but so far I am amazed with it. I paid under $550 for it after tax, and it is not the only ruger American I’ve had that was consistently a sub moa gun. I believe ruger has set a bar for what cheap rifles should aspire to be. If you are watching this to decide whether or not to get an inexpensive rifle to start hunting or to save up and buy something better, get yourself a ruger American now. Start hunting with it the way it is and upgrade the trigger and stock over time. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.

When it comes to the budget end of the market you really have four things to consider. Barrel, action, trigger/safety and stock. My personal experience with the likes of Ruger American and Savage Axis is that modern CNC manfacturing and QAQC can nail the first two, barrel and action. Pretty much any modern barrel and action is capable of sub MOA performance. Trigger? As long as you are smart and select a gun with an "upgraded" trigger like the Savage Accutrigger you are pretty much good to go there too. A little bit of fine grit paper on the sear can accelerate bedding in and you will end up a pretty crisp 2.0-2.5lb trigger with minimum creep. Do you need any better really? I don't think so. Sometimes you get a plastic safety lever/button which is a bit disappointing though. It works fine and is plenty durable but metal, even if MIM, would be preferable Then there is the stock.....that's where these manufacturers skimp. Just a nasty piece of injection molded plastic with maybe a metal bedding block built in. They flex at the fore end and they can fit badly, both you and to the receiver. You are far better off going for an upgraded stock direct form the manufacturer like Magpul go after market with a Boyds laminate. If you can sell the original and recoup a bit then great but otherwise understand that it's the stock that is often the difference between the budget rifle and it's more expensive big brother and that may be a price worth paying if adjustability if a feature of the stock therein.

I bought a Ruger american predator in 6.5 creedmoor shorty after they came out. I put a magpul stock, muzzle brake, and a vortex diamondback tactical on her and I've hit a 12 inch steel gong out to 700 yards and 500 yards is easy once you get windage hold figured. I haven't really played much past that distance given our lovely Nebraska wind is usually blowing 25-60 mph so them days are few and far between that wouldn't require a 100 foot of windage adjustment lol. I've since gotten a Bergara wich touts a little higher end vortex on it. I absolutely love the Bergara and like Backfire I think they are an amazing bang for the buck however I still take my Ruger American out just as much as the Bergara and never feel inadequate or under gunned granted I'm no professional or high volume shooter. I also forgot to mention I have Ruger American Ranch 5.56 which takes standard ar mags. I'm not sure if that's a factory option in all calibers now or not? My 6.5 Ruger american came with the rotary magazine like in the video but it now uses ar10 mags after the Magpul stock and feeds like a dream now!

I've got a Fierce carbon CT Rival in 7REM mag, and the gun shoots winchester deer season ammo in half-inch groups. It shoots a 139 grn Barnes LRX factory ammo in the same hole if the shooter is doing what he is supposed to. The only other load shot through the gun was hornady american whitetail, and that was at a half moa. The gun has been very reliable. I want their new ct rival with the detachable box mag. If springfield would make the waypoint in a 7 Rem mag, I'd get that instead, but that will never happen.

I have the fierce mountain reaper. Mine has a thermal scope on top about a $6 or $7,000 setup in gear and rifled but what drives me batty is that humongous mag release on the bottom. It's very easy to bump that and have your mag fall out on the ground (real world hunting that is).

Accuracy isn't just down to the gun it's also depends on the ammunition you use, some ammunitions are more compatible than others to each individual gun. You can also use a harmonic barrel tuner to tighten groups too.

I like nice guns! I don't mind spending the money I just saved till I had enough money to buy it then I put good scopes on them. I have always been that way. I bought a Christensen arms Ridgeline in 6.5 prc last year shoots 1/2 moa and I love that rifle and the trigger is the best I have ever seen on a hunting gun. I do own two cheap guns a Remington 788 in 222 shoots one tiny hole groups and a ruger American in 300 blk out as a toy shoots 1/2 inch groups. I am a nice gun guy other then those two everyone has to make there own choices buy what you like but put good glass on whatever you buy. Darren

My Rugar American Predator in 6.5 Creedmoor shoots my hunting load a 129 grain Nosler Acubond and a max load of IMR 4350 into 0.75" and a Burger 140 grain Hybrid with 41.5 grains of H4350 around 0.50" both 5 shot groups at 100 yards. It does have a Bell&Carlson fiberglass stock I bought on sale for about $150, and weighs about 9.5# with a Weaver 4.5X20X44 AO scope. The magazines are more reliable now but I have cut a small V in the front so as I am chambering a round and the bullet point dips down it glides across the V and up into the chamber and is 100% reliable.

I have the Mt reaper in 308, it cost 2200 BRAND NEW AT Cabela's (they are known to be over priced). It is LIGHT, and folds up for storage. And it HOLDS accuracy with my AGM Thermal scope. (When I pull it on or off). Seams to be a fine rifle. Butz my 60 year old Rem 700 in 308 can out shoot it (of course it outshoots ANY RIFLE- as it shoots 1 jagged hole at 200 yards).

Great video. I learned so much. For me there's too much technology with the tripod, high end scope, range finder. It takes the humanity out of shooting. The high tech makes it too easy and that takes the fun out of it for me. Thank you I will be buying a Fierce.

My thing is that I can't not mess with a factory rifle, so I just end up going to customs anyways. I owned a Sako 85 Bavarian (stupidly sold it) and that was the nearest to perfect I ever had straight from the factory, but I had to shorten the stock to fit me. Now I'm looking at getting a Tikka Hunter in 300 WM, buying a takeoff 6.5 creed on ebay, and rechambering it to 264 win mag. That, and shortening the stock and installing a red decelerator pad. Good content, Jimothy my boy

On My Remington 700 PCR 308 Win, I put a Timney Calvin Elite set at 8oz, 0 take up 0 overtravel, On my Mossberg I put in a Timney Mossberg LBA Short Action set at 2 lbs., 0 take up 0 overtravel. The Mossberg Patriot is chambered in 5.56 and uses AR mags. I live in communistic Canada, I knew they were coming for my AR's. I got to say, the triggers make a lot of different. My 700 at 100 yards I have put 5 rounds of 168gr BTHP in a group that can be covered by a nickel. I decided to post this as I saw the cheap rifle had that BS trigger safety. by a good aftermarket trigger.

I have put together many PSA built lower receivers with BCA uppers, and they have been awesome! BCA is making great stuff and rifles that people are looking for in so many calibers, like he said the items are a great price! And they have great customer service they get it fixed and back in a week or less! I have people refer to Anderson AR-15s as "Poverty Ponys" and turn their noses up at PSA or Bear Creek so they can brag about what expensive things they have. Then later they can't outshoot the competition shooters at the range that are using standard ammo and standard firearms who are just having fun and socializing with other shooters I really enjoy seeing the Barney Fifes who have all the high-speed holster and gear and a stack of gun publications who talk a big game but when the old pros leave them in the dust! Milspec is, more than most people will ever need most people can't outperform their firearm.

I know that high end scope has extra projected features in it, but how does it compare to the SIG BDX series? I've got a BDX 3.5-10 on my Weatherby Mark V

I've had the same feeding issue with the Ruger Rotary mags. Especially with shorter cartridges. After I swapped to the AR and the AI magazine wells, I have not ran into the problem again.
