Hi Randy. Love your channel! I started watching a few months ago while on a quest to resume my love of music previously put on hold for many reasons. My budget will no longer allow most of the things you review but what you have taught me is to find speakers "that give you joy", from your review of polk TSi100's, which I own, and to pull the best out of what you have. That thought launched my quest. Craigslist, ebay and chi-fi has allowed me to construct 2 systems that absolutely bring me joy, with components to mix and match! Thanks for sharing your passion and humor.

@tmdillon1969Ай бұрын
I have some ideas as well. If you want Cornwalls you can find Cornwall 1s for less than 1K if they're not that pretty. I rebuilt a set I got for $172 and put in upgraded Crites crossovers, increased bracing, and two layer damping and they sound incredible. All for less than 1K combined. The older Cornwalls have pretty boomy cabinets but much higher quality components in their crossovers than the 3s and 4s. Personally, I disagree with Randy about the Cornwalls and source components. I find them to be the most forgiving of what you're driving them with of any Klipsch product and especially in the Heritage line. One of the best things about them is a speaker that size still sounds "complete" at very low levels. A woofer that big just moves a lot of air so the bass doesn't fall into the background when you have it at conversation level dbs. Another line I'd look at is CSS. They are not "cheap" but boy what you get for your money....wow. I built the CSS 1TDX kit with the upgraded crossovers and they are simply incredible. That's around $1300 for that kit but you can find multiple reviewers throwing them against 5K-10K speakers and the 1TDX don't give up anything. Mine are in our family room which is an acoustic nightmare and people who don't know a speaker from a banana comment on how good they sound. Right now CSS has their flagship Typhon model on clearance for $2995 which isn't cheap buy any means but they are beautiful and built to compete with anything under 20K. Of course Randy is focused on new items because then one can readily get them for themselves. I like used so someone else pays the depreciation. With that I'll say that 90s Mirage/Energy speakers are the best value I regularly see on FB marketplace. I've seen pristine pairs of 1090i towers for $250 when they were 3K new in 1995. They were still made in Canada then and it was before Klipsch bought them and killed the brand.
@Mike.MacmyazkaАй бұрын
When did you buy and upgrade the Cornwall’s? I ask because I’ve looked at Crites and stuff and unless you know of a cheaper way to purchase them, they don’t seem to be that cheap anymore. Also I haven’t seen a pair of Cornwall that sell for less than about $2k…pretty or not. Looking at what is on the bay at both available and sold pricing. There’s no local market. And for me to drive hours to find something that is in that price range is more expensive due to time and fuel. I mean maybe if you’re really diligent, what you are saying can be done right now but not from what I’ve seen. Just my opinion. Still a lot cheaper than a new pair of IV’s though so I’ll give you that. As for CSS. I want to buy some of their speakers but I haven’t pulled the trigger yet. I do own two of their SDX10’s that I frankensteined into JBL 550P sub enclosures. Still using JBL plate amp for now. They are 10 times the sub that the JBL stock was. And that’s without giving them the power they deserve. I need to find a Crown amp or something similar to give them at least 500W RMS each to really see what they can do. All in on $500 for sealed subs, I think they compete with ANYTHING in the sub $600 range on the market right now. The 550P’s were $190 new. The drivers were just about $300 each. One was retail at $325 and one was 10% off. So almost dead on the $500 mark so far. Figure a two channel Crown to fit my needs will be a few hundred more. They’ll still be well worth the price paid for everything. Hopefully my comment doesn’t sound combative. I’m just wondering if the Cornwall were in the past year or if that was a few years ago.

Brilliant start to this one!👍 Ohhh! At about 2:00 ish, it gets even better! yep, you're definitely bringing something unusually good to this hobby! I noticed my first "good" speakers were able to, uh, start and stop big sounds instantly. (No echo or trailing off, from silent to big to silent... instantly.) And that is what I understood to be the attribute of "dynamic" but when I write that in words, I see how difficult it is to do what you're doing! Dynamic is definitely a thing... hard to describe... The biggest challenge, especially for a newby (like me), is trying to determine what is making something sound good or bad. Is it the speakers. is it the amp, is it the recording? Since there aren't many stereo stores left, you almost have to purchase something just based on reviews and hope it satisfies your listening experience.
@smkordisАй бұрын
All of the things you mentioned and very important is placement in the room. Unfortunately, even if there is a stereo equipment store near you, it is typically full of expensive high end equipment that most of us can’t afford.

@brysonfitzgerald5238Ай бұрын
@smkordis that, and because of room acoustics, it's likely that components you like in the stereo shop will sound very different when placed in your home setup. I much prefer having hundreds or thousands of reviews readily available, or lots of forums to peruse, over listening to a component in a store with a sales associate hovering around me. But, that's just me 😊
@AvruthlelbhАй бұрын
In order of importance from most to least: Your preference bounds/HRTF, your environment, your audio-playing equipment (as in speakers/headphones/IEMs), your DAC, your Amp, your familiarity with a recording, and the resolution of the recording itself. All of these are important, and the order can change if you have a massive bottleneck with a horrible DAC or a compressed-to-hell audio file, for example. That being said, you don't need to find hundreds of reviews to get the idea of if something is good or not. I fully recommend finding someone who seems to have similar preferences you do based on products you both like/dislike, and use their reviews as a reference when buying. Just remember returning is pretty much always an option if you're buying new.

Mr. Randy. I'd love to see you do something with Magnepans. The new price for the upper-end stuff is nuts, but the LRS is an incredible speaker and I think hard to beat. But It'd be interesting to see how it stacks up against similarly priced stuff, stuff at twice the price, and then add a subwoofer to the LRS and see how that changes the value proposition. Another angle that's harder to do and not really the scope of this channel is the bang for the buck on the used market. I picked up some 3.5Rs a few years back for $650. My god was that the best $650 could sound .

At the few concerts and even bars I've been to I recall hearing the vocals out front, lead guitar out front, crashing cymbals and feeling the bass but not so much hearing it. Speakers like Klipsch Cornwall present recordings this way even with modest equipment. I have Klipschorns and a speaker similar to the PBN Sammy but DIY - not as nice looking but sounds like my Klipschorns do in tonal balance but go deeper in bass. I built speakers in the 70's and 80's that had that sound at a fraction of the price -- when a Cornwall was something like $350 each, the DIY version was $100 each -- rent was around $150. I selected the speakers at a local shop. I set the crossover to how I liked it, avoiding resonances I didn't like. Perhaps they wouldn't have measured well but who cares? The sound was good. A speaker I built in the 70's used re-coned 10-inch drivers in a cast frame (I got blown at Radio Shack) with accordion rubberized surrounds and was either 2-way or 3-way, can't recall. Sounded great at around $50 each. My goal then was to not break the bank. Now that I have decent playback, the sound is all the better. Getting sound that doesn't fatigue is essential. A short listen in the shop is difficult to know how you'll like it long term.

@@NosEL34 oh i have the R700. Easy to listen to them all day. Definitely curious to hear what others think about them compared to other similar priced speakers. My experience says they are pretty hard to beat at their price point.
@NosEL34Ай бұрын
@@user-st9wh4ed5l yeah I think that a lot of people that buy the R700 it might be there first "expensive" or most they ever paid for a speaker. I think because of the Polk name we will have some people that usually spend upwards to $3k on speakers but buying a Polk isn't high on their list. My take on the R700 is that it is a great speaker for the money. It has the ability to scale well with more expensive equipment. You can buy the Polk's early in your journey or before you start venturing into more expensive separates or integrateds. As you start climbing into better components replacing the Polk's right away isn't completely necessary. They can make due until your surrounding components are ready for that next level speaker. But also, the Polk's could very well be the last speaker one buys for a very long time. To me, there isn't one great thing that sticks out from the Polk's. It's just a good all around pair of speakers. Not much to complain about for the money. Especially if you get them used or on sale for under/around $18-1900. Which is still a lot of money for most average people. $2k on speakers is ridiculous to a lot of folks. They obviously aren't the best but damn good for the money & I would say not embarrassed compared to more expensive. If set up correctly & used under 90db sound levels they are good. The room has a huge effect on them though. I have to use a little PEQ due to them being close to the wall behind them. Without a little DSP they wouldn't work for me. Set up right I think most people could keep em for a lifetime. They don't have that super high frequency extension though...but I try to avoid speakers like that anyway.

I find it hard to believe the RSLs have the same "character" as the KEF LS50 Metas. If you move vertically off axis by 3 inches the frequency response will change dramatically. The beauty of well designed concentric drivers is very similar frequency response off axis horizontally and vertically, plus identical time alignment no matter where you listen from. The midwoofers in a D'Appolito design should be as close as physically possible to avoid severe lobing in the vertical axis response. This will also create a very uneven total audio power output of the speakers into the room, likely increasing listener fatigue significantly.

I rotate a lot of speakers. I want to keep all of them…except monitor audio..Only speakers I just could NOT get used too. All of their series. Very bright and fatiguing no matter what amp I paired them with. Flip-side, a brand that seems to always sound great-q acoustics.

I'm sorry, I am not trying to cause controversy here. That being said. REALLY?. Comparing the behemoth Klipsch Cornwall IV to what basically amounts to an overgrown bookshelf speaker?. Seems a bit like apples and oranges to me. Just because two speakers may have some common traits like being bright or warm etc...does not make one a decent substitute for the other. I have listened to both the Cornwall and the JBL. Not even in the same State, let alone ballpark.

I've build a lot with Visaton. Currently (for over ten years actually) running a Jamo Oriel inspired design , with TIW200XS, AL170 and KE-25SC. Took me some time to get them right, but you'll have to spend A LOT to beat those.

In terms of the KEF LS-50s. I would think that the KEF Q350s would be a good choice for an lesser priced alternative. The funny thing is that the response graphs are very close on both speakers, and in fact, the Q-350's have more bass. So really why is KEF asking $1600 (not $1300) for the uglier looking LS-50's? I don't know, but I have been speculating that KEF might be doing what other brand name companies are doing...trolling. Yeah, that's asking way more than what a product is worth. Speaking of trolling, seeing as to how much Klipsch is charging for their heritage line is making my stomach churn. Yeah, they were always expensive, but I think they are just taking it too far. I really don't think the Cornwalls are worth that. As for those Focal speakers? Well, those of you that have seen my past posts in regards to Focal. They top the list as my #1 biggest troll company. I mean really $100k for speakers? That's the cost of a luxury car! Or a nice cabin in the woods! Home speakers shouldn't cost that much..ever! And you would be stupid to buy them too. That's a total waste of money. While I think the SVS is still too expensive at $2500, it looks to be a similar speaker to the Focal and probably will get you 85% to 90% there. Do you really need to spend 40 times that amount? No, definitely not.

At about 14:46 you talk about how "picky" a speaker might be about the recordings... I'm understanding that to mean the way the studio and mix engineers did their... whatever they do. Long ago I had a vynil record from Todd Rundgren (who is still alive!) in which he talked about recording stuff... that was the first time I realized there's another whole dimension to this... So what's the kind of thing that comes through for you when you hear "picky" speakers? What do you do with that? I will guess that in that case the DAC is invisible, as it should (?) be... I've never tried to explore this level. I have no idea how to even start... I'd love to have your perspective!

Some speakers. and usually the higher end ones that have the ability to reolve a lot of detail can make it pretty obvious if there is a bad recording. Most of the time I like a speaker to play well with all of my music because I listen to a lot of music that wasn't recorded well. Ignorance is bliss though. If you find a speaker that you like and plays well with the music you listen to the most then that's the speaker you should stick with

When choosing my speakers (20 years ago) Tannoy speakers to me I called Tinoy... they were way to bright and couldn't listen to them for long. But that first few songs would be wow... after that I found them annoying. I learned early to watch out for the wow effect. I found if I was amazed right away it more than often was a bad thing.

I also went back and grabbed the Cabasse Abyss, that amplifier with the DPS, and streamer is intriguing to say the least.

For many a moon(decades) I have heard s number of times - Some people say that speakers should be 100% neutral so that one actually hears what the audio engineers etc layed down. Just a mention from yester years and decades. 🤔

The whole under 1k retail scene making me tired... always some new frugal product to check out, only couple stand out and not get differentiated enough and the creep of everyone talking of same product at same time increases distrust. I wonder how many people buy 3-4 frugal products when might have been satisfied by the 2-3x product (cost) to begin with but I suppose you have to go through the learning process. However, I know how this hobby works, you have to have something else to try to step up for something convinced oneself needs despite many times it just being something different.
