My system choice is this: WiiM Mini $80 Geshelli J2 AKM $250 Cambridge Audio AXA35 $399 Elac BS41 with my mods $180-300 depending on price you pay for the speakers, and level of crossover parts $909 or up to $1029 The AXA35 is a Class A/B integrated amp with a phono stage and 4 line inputs. It has a toroidal transformer, and the wonderful Texas Instruments LM3886 output devices - it has a "real" remote, and it sounds really good. It is 35W/ch @ 8 ohms and about 50W/ch @ 4 ohms. It has a headphone amp, as well. It's on sale at the moment for $349 from Cambridge Audio. I can't say enough good things about the J2 AKM - for about $75 you can add a 12V 25W linear power supply that takes it from excellent to *stunning* sounding. Your choice of colors on the aluminum case and front/back panels for no extra $ - or opt for your choice of dovetailed solid wood case - made by Joe at Geshelli - for $50-100. As Randy mentions, if you need a USB input, that is a $50 option, as well. The Elac BS41 with the relatively simple mods - is an amazing speaker! It is designed to be placed fairly close to the wall, and in my room is essentially flat to about 42Hz. And the soundstage and midrange openness and treble clarity - rivals *much* more expensive speakers. Other folks who have listened to them prefer my modded BS41 to the Polk R100 or the Elac UniFi 2.0 for example.

Very interested in this - can you share your impressions on stock power supply vs. the LHY Audio LPS25VA?
@toddt55622 жыл бұрын
@@nesutoneko The linear power supply cleans up the DC input power versus the stock wall wart switch mode power supply. This helps to provide a blacker background, and that allows for improved low-level detail and spatial cues. Also gives you a more organic and natural sound and removes some minor digital glare and hardness from the midrange. Opens ups the soundstage a bit as well. J2 sound is excellent even with the stock power supply, but the LPS brings it to the next level. Improvement probably roughly 10 to 20%. I have the AKM version and have been swapping between it and my Denafrips Pontus 2 In my system. Rest of system includes iFi Zen Stream with LHY LPS, Denafrips Hermes DDC, Athena preamp, Apollo power amp, and Tekton double impact speakers. Love the channel, another great video! I was dealing with a lower budget recently for my youngster who has started collecting vinyl but has no turntable to listen on - they usually listen to music in their room on earbuds from their phone and my tt setup is in the living room. I wanted to stay under 600$ with tax/delivery etc, and small enough for their room (and potentially a dorm room in a few years) but with a decent tt that can grow with them as they eventually move away and outgrow the rest of this system. Ended up going with: 299 - Fluance Reference RT82 249 - Klipsch R-15PM I figured the lowest level reference Fluance fit the expandability requirements as something they can keep for years and just upgrade bits as wanted, and the Klipsch while not great is compact, can accept input from the tt (has a built in pre-amp) and their iPhone/iPad/whatever. Also as a bridge before they outgrow this, can always add in a small sub and/or a separate phono pre-amp in a few years.

Randy, you just sold me on the J2 AKM DAC when you said it sounds close to the Denafrips Ares II, which I wished to try, but is not available to me. I can't get a J2 right now, but down the road for sure! Sounds like it could improve upon the DAC in my now far too expensive CD player (glad I got it when I did, yikes) and the built in DAC on my preamp, which I use for when I very occasionally let "missy" (Alexa) play with my system (via a simple basic bluetooth receiver/transceiver). I'm not that impressed with either built-in DAC. The one in my CD player is alright, but just a standard Delta Sigma like every other DS DAC out there at any price point. The DAC in my preamp I feel though able to do High Rez (which I don't care about), is somewhat mis-matched to the preamp. (About the only one of two minor cons I have to live with, the system is still my endgame).

Desktop system: Keces E40 integrated amp $750 Wiim Pro $150 Hifiman Sundara headphones $300 Kanto YU4 passive speakers $200 I own the E40, and Sundara headphones. I did own the active YU4s and I have the passive set on order. The Wiim Pro is a new product and will be available late 2022 or early 2023. The system has the basics and will be upgradable without being overly redundant. The E40 is a class A/AB amp, it has a 3.5mm headphone jack and a USB DAC that is on par with entry level stand alone units. It also has a phono stage and RCA pre output jacks. The Wiim Pro is a network (wired and wireless) streamer and has connectivity via Bluetooth, Airplay 2, Chromecast Audio and digital optical. The Sundaras pair well with the E40 and the headphones I would consider replacing them with are $1200 and up. The YU4 passive speakers are replacing Keiid active speakers on my desktop. I selected them mainly because they're not much bigger than what they are replacing, I'm familiar with their sound, and, they look good. Honestly the Keiids sound great but I don't need powered speakers anymore. They would be a great startup stand alone desktop system for $80 (KD-C01) or $90 (KD-C02). The Keiids also scale well, add a stand alone entry level DAC and you'll hear the difference. Add a preamp and the difference will be more noticeable. A DAC/amp combo like the Topping DX3 Pro+ ($200) paired with the Keiids would be a great entry level system. I would also recommend the Keiids if you're blowing your budget on a headphone system and you need desktop speakers as an afterthought or something to carry you over until you can afford true monitors like the Genelecs.

One of the reasons why I like Emotiva is I know I'm getting more for my money. Those BS41's at full price are ridiculous and go on sale every so often for almost half of that, meaning they have huge margins so everyone involved gets their cut. One thing you forgot to include was stands. I know it can get into the weeds with including things like wire and connectors but if you're new and starting from scratch it's helpful. Hidden costs are a pain in the butt.

All are great DACs, and the heft and build quality of the Denafrips' are much greater than the J2, as you would expect with their higher prices. However, surprisingly, the J2 will provide a very similar sound at a fraction of the cost. As the other comment said, as a part of a budget system the difference will be hard to discern. Even with my 20K system the differences are not large. J2 AKM provides a very R2R like soundstage, more open with more depth than many other Delta sigma chip-based DACs. Hope this helps.

I'm planning on getting the Emotiva Airmotiv B1+ speakers and the Airmotiv SE8/SE12 subwoofer within the next day or so (which puts me between $571 - $624 based on prices on their site). I already have a Blu-ray player for playing CD's and BluRay, and I have a smartphone that I plan to stream music from via BlueTooth. I don't have a vinyl player, nor do I plan on getting one (I'm really into CDs!) WHAT SHOULD I GET as a DAC/AMP TO STAY UNDER/AROUND $1000? What integrates well with the Emotiva speakers? I've seen people use Aiyima A07, but I'm tempted by other Aiyima's as well (T9, D03, etc), but I'm not married to that brand if there are other options that will play music as clear and detailed. Any feedback is appreciated!

I like this video a lot but I have been looking at more headphone/iem centric builds. On the SE side I started out with the Fluance R85 and the Mani, Saga S when i need to scratch the upgrade itch. On the digital side I was looking at the modi/magni/loki and a sys switch to grab the Vali when i want some tube-ocity. Otherwise I could could go up a bit and have a balanced circuit with the Modius/magnius/lokius and then the sys switch can put the R85 through the Valhalla2 for some tubage. I have a dead Klipsch 2.1so I am going to resuscitate it with some Fosi amps/sub out and a mono sub amp. I have a pair of Definitive logic satellites to replace the Klipsch desktop satellites. Cool?

Hey Randy, I picked up an NAD 7240pe integrated amp (40w @8 ohm) for $150 (it has phono input and preamp outs so that I can add a turntable and a tube amp down the line), an Audio Research DacMagic 100 for $125 and a set of Emotiva B1+'s for $200. I think I got a pretty damn good basic system for under $500. I am looking at a Technic turntable (circa 1980s, quartz needle) for the asking price of $125. Do you have any suggestion for a subwoofer under $350 that will blend well with the budget hi-fi system I am building?

That darn itch. I have it for motorcycles and stereos. In 1984, I made a diy stereo for my motorcycle. Jenson speakers and a Craig amp. I forget the source. Maybe 8-track.

These are all great recommendations. Don't forget the Polk Tsi100's. Amazing bookshelf speakers that can be picked up for $99! I replaced a pair of Wharfdale Denton's with the Tsi100's and I think the Polk's sound better. Deal of the century while you can still get them. EDIT - Add a Dayton Sub800 for $150 and you've a great speaker/sub combo for $350 - KILLER DEAL. :)

I've found sourcing the components, i can build a set of floor speakers twice as cheap as i can buy them, while getting better speakers and guts in the process. u can even fine tune your build by using different crossover combos. I'd like to learn more about amps and build my own one of those too.

I know this probably won't appeal to everyone, but I'd really like Randy to set up each one of these systems and try them for 48 hours to see what he thinks of them. I'm especially interested in how the last combo, the bass lover's system works out in practice. It sounds like it could be a lot of fun, but I feel like you never know for sure until you try it.

Been Slowly building my system up. This is where I'm at now. Considering upgrading to the PT2 Preamp for the High pass crossover settings. Haven't decided if it's worthwhile yet. What do you guys think? Emotiva PT1 Preamp Emotiva BASX A2 Power Amp Geshelli Labs J2 DAC Klipsh RP 600M ii or SVS Prime Bookshelf (I swap back and forth for fun since they're totally different speakers) Emotiva SE8 8 inch Subwoofer (considering upgrading to SVS SB 1000 PRO)
@toddt55622 жыл бұрын
One relatively low cost upgrade I would recommend is switching to a linear power supply for the J2. I use the LHY audio LPS 25VA, 12 volt. $168 from Beatechnik. That should give you the best bang for buck improvement... Don't think I would upgrade the preamp just for the high pass filtering. I have the SVSB1000 pro and it's a solid subwoofer and the app control is nice. However, since you already have a sub I don't know that that would necessarily produce a dramatic improvement unless bass is super important to you. One rule of thumb that I've found to be fairly true is that you need to triple your spend on a component in order to realize a dramatic improvement. Not always the case, but often the case. Hope this helps.

I am going to try a variation of two of your recommended systems. I'm going to pair the geshelli J2 with the emotive A2m and use the A2m for volume control. Not as powerful as your A2 with the Topping dac, but I'm hoping the benefits of the J2 will offset the power loss to 50wpc. It will be digital only like one of your other systems. Speakers still TBD. Opinions??

Hey, I've just put together my nearfield listening setup for fine listening at my PC: A MOTU M2 audio interface as a source, feeding a vintage Yamaha MX-1 power amp (200 Watts!), driving a pair of Emotiva B1+. I was tempted to go for the B2+, but was advised that I'd actually have better sound for my use case of listening within range of 4ft or less. Would you agree that to be true?

Randy, I’m hoping I’m not stepping on any toes, here, but if you’re recommending the Elac 4”-ers, what happened to your love for the Neumi BS5’s? Do they not compare? Are they only good for surrounds? Are they the stepchild who only gets the leftover scraps? Tell me it ain’t so! (Well, please just be honest.)

Would like to add that the e50 was made to pair with the pa5 which is a tpa3255 based amp, so I'd suggest you pair it with the aiyima a07,a04 or an TPA 3251/55 based amp. I personally have found this sort of pairing really makes the e50 warmer and more enjoyable.

In the guitar amplifier world, tube amps are much more powerful than solid state amps at the same rated wattage. For instance, a 20w solid state amp will be fine for noodling around at home, but not necessarily something that will make it through the sound of the rest of a band. On the other hand, a 20w tube amp will rattle the windows. Is the same true for 2-channel stereo amplifiers? Thanks in advance.

The second system has the Wiim mini and no separate DAC. Is the RCA output from the streamer ok enough to go straight into the amp?
