I really like that Sith audio makes affordable stuff like the cable management nano-tape for entry level users like me. I feel that the carbon impregnated flex isolation strip really improves the speed and control of the lower mid and upper punch regions. My only problem is that I can't afford the measurement or segmentation tools for properly delineating the cable management material. I'm saving up to get that kit, but in the mean time I'm using my phone and a kitchen knife to create the cable management segments. I'm pretty sure I'm losing resolution because of that. "Audiophiles" will tell you need to buy a $1000 amp to enjoy your headphones, but the truth is, even $100 amps like the Schiit Heresy are more than enough to power 99% of headphones to their full potential. There's literally only two qualifiers for a good (non-tube) amp, and that's the amount of power it can supply and how little distortion it adds. The Heresy can output 3 WATTS of power with virtually 0 distortion. Cheap amps today made by reputable brands measure better and output more power than 10 year old flagship amps that cost over a grand in their time.

I currently own Sundaras and had Anandas. The Ananda was like the Sundara but THICC bass and a much wider soundstage but less impact overall. The sundara likes to image most things into the center and a bit close to the face, and then have left and right off at a 45. I'm thinking I'll get the Edition xs and get enough of the Ananda out of them but without the price tag. The Ananda's wider stage with greater depth and razer thin center image versus the blob of the Sundara was wonderful. The reason I returned them was because one of the cups was grinding on the frame above where it was held it to the headband, I immediately lost faith in the build.

Period. as a long term metal head and rock listener I can never get the boom of my guitar cab to sound right on all these so called 'HiFi headphones'. It's not really HiFi if the sound spectrum is incomplete is it? It can be better for one thing or the other but compared to something like a studio monitor that we mix on, being a complete frequency response and being fun is more important than just being good at some one thing for me. Reviewers should be more considerate of a majority of house/electro and metal/rock listeners as well because for the longest time I changed gear not having the slightest idea which one would suit my tastes best until I was already out of money on that piece of gear.

@@Viettzz Never listened the Xs, but the specs looks the same. Ananda: 8-55kHz, 103dB; XS: 8-50kHz; 92dB. For half the price, the XS is a good deal, but he Ananda is very efficient (sensivity).
@blorg82062 жыл бұрын
The specs are very different, just look at the sensitivity. This needs around 10x the power of the Ananda, it really needs a headphone amp. Many other headphones have similar quoted frequency ranges but that's not very meaningful. Sound though IS quite similar, XS has better bass extension and is more forward. Ananda can sound more smooth. Ananda has slightly better soundstage. Fit for me is much better on the Ananda, the XS is very loose. Much looser than the HE400SE which has the same headband. XS is definitely competitive with the Ananda sound-wise but I don't think you need to rush out and buy it if you already have the Ananda, it's relatively subtle differences- and it's not all one-sided, the Ananda is still better in some ways, the Edition XS in others. Also, it's not really half the price. Ananda is $599 now, this is $499 (US pricing). In China, they're both even cheaper, Ananda is around $450-470 in China, this is around $360-390. So it's just a little less. They made the saving in the packaging (no faux leather box), the cable (simple rubbery cable, I actually think better than the Ananda but it's more simple), the headband (worse IMO than the Ananda). I don't think they skimped on the drivers, they are certainly competitive.

What are the diffs between them? The Elex are my best open back set and I use the Ether CX for closed back. I have an old HiFiMan HE-560 v1 that is as clear and open as the Elex, but is also without the punch and without the bass, even when connected balanced to a Jot 2.

@@edwarddodge7937 well the XS have a larger scale to the round Hifimans (I have the he400i and he4xx for comparison). I mean the XS are not miles ahead (I don't believe in the night and day schools of thought), but somehow the egg shaped Hifimans in general, and this in particular, do it almost right in every way, including good and more present sub bass. How they differ from the Elex is that they Elex are more punchy and dynamic, whereas the XS are yet even more open and have a much bigger soundstage, and a bit more relaxed, like Randy said... U curve. The Elex may feel a bit more detailed, yet the XS are much less agressive and offensive. The timber is good on both but a bit more natural on the XS. And the XS really are the least offensive in my stable, and never fatiguing. Never. They're mellow, relaxed. Occasionally, they may feel like having more relaxed mids, so that's not their best feature, but I'm ok with relaxed mids. The Elex has more detail and forward mids. These are laid back. I think the Elex may have more bass. But the XS seems to me about the best planar sound at this price. In my mind, these don't quite best each other out, but rather the best of both worlds. TL;DR, just follow Randy on what he says here. He's saying it better.

XS or Ananda Stealth (V3), many people say they sound very similar, but the bass is just more prominent on XS compared to Ananda.

So, Randy curios which, if you know, which version of the Highfiman is Jason Stiddard useing for his floor staff. As l heard him comment they take a lick'n and keep on ticking. The reason l ask is the 3 out of 10 reviews at Amazon were snarky on build quality. PS... U ever going to do a Powered Speaker Shot out with say the Klipsh 5's oh please...

I just got a pair and quite frankly they suck. The manual says you need to burn them in for 150 hrs? Is this true or is there possibly something wrong with mine. I am hearing sibilance using an audio quest red dongle DAC as well as with using a Schitt BiFrost thru an Onkyo TX-SV 525

It would be great to interesting to hear your viewpoint on these too. I got mine about three weeks ago and I think they are great. On the forums there have been a discussion about whether they need an absurd amount of power or not. I drive them both from an iPhone and from the L50 and I find them equally enjoyable. I hope someone like you can try them on different amps and tell us the truth!

@@cheapaudioman Thing is, I don't think that they are great for metal. I love em for jazz, classic, rock and voices are especially gorgeous but for Metal Hardrock and punchier music in general I never found harder hitting headphones then my RP 60s. The 60s creak horribly but I love em anyway. The Planars are the best headphones I ever heard when it comes to "beautiful" music. I hope that wasn't to detailed : )

Dangit Randy, I bought these after watching your review. I tend to prefer a warmer sound signature so I will try them with my Xduoo MT602's. I'm currently using the Sennheiser 560s for music and gaming. How do you think they will hold up in comparison? Cheers!

@@citizenuk I haven't received them yet as I put in the order yesterday but I will update asap! Perhaps Mr. cheapaudioman can chime in?

@@citizenuk Sorry for the delayed response. I wanted to get a fair amount of time in with these headphones before commenting. Okay so, if you are in the market for a pair of headphones and 500 dollars is not a big stretch for your hobby then I would definitely get these. The clarity, detail, soundstage, imaging, bass, weight, and comfort are quite impressive. It was a little weird getting used to them at first coming from the 560s because the XS feel a lot looser and relaxed on your head. I actually hated the way they felt as a first impression. The 560s have a much more athletic fit (if that makes any sense). After putting in the time with the Hifiman I very much got used to the fit and feel. I initially tried these headphones with my mt-602 hybrid tube amp and thought the headphones were an improvement but wasn't sure if I wanted to keep the much more expensive headphone as I was pretty satisfied with my 560s. However, I thought I would use my Schiit Magni amp (using Schiit Modi DAC) and at the moment I realized I must keep these headphones. The detail, speed, impact, and separation of these headphones really came to life. I was a bit surprised as I much preferred my MT-602 amp in the past. I believe this is because these are planar headphones vs dynamic as many might note. Last night was my Friday and wanted to go to bed to catch up on some lost sleep. I made the mistake of putting on some FLAC music files and ended up staying up a couple more hours. As far as sound signature/timbre goes, they provide amazing clarity and detail but are coated with a little smoothness or silk if you will. I've heard some people say the vocals sound a little recessed and they would eq the headphones to fix that. I would agree that I initially thought that to be true but I either got used to the vocals or they just needed time to be broken in (if you believe that is a thing). So music and movies sound great but what about FPS gaming compared to the 560s? Well, I think both of these headphones perform on a top tier competitive level. The 560s might be a little less fatiguing but the Hifiman XS has a slight edge in almost all areas. Bigger sound stage, better imaging, more detail and separation. Will these headphones make you a better player? That is up for debate. I've been able to reach Diamond in Apex Legends both splits this season with the 560s in split 1 and the Hifiman XS split 2, respectively. Again the XS might have a slight edge and I'll be primarily if not exclusively using my XS headphones if I want to waste more of my time trying to push to Masters. Looks like the cheapaudioman can be trusted as what he described all appears to be true to my ears. When I put on my 560s it now sounds a little nasally, lacking clarity and detail. I can't see myself needing or wanting to "upgrade" my headphones for a long time. Perhaps I can now focus on wasting my money on a proper speaker amp or hurting myself on a more dangerous motorcycle. Cheers.

PS as a little background, I have tried the PC38x and would recommend the 560s as I found them just as good for gaming but quite a bit better for music and movies/media. I bought the Sundara's as one of my best friends love them but returned them right away. The detail and clarity was great but there was absolutely no body to them to my ears. They sounded very clinical and analytical but mostly empty which are not necessary bad things but I required a lot more flavor and punch. It actually made me think that I wasn't geared towards being an "audiophile" as so many have high regard for this headphone including one of my best mates. As many know, sound is very personal but I can't see anyone disliking the Hifiman XS as they seem to excel in all the right areas. I do wish they looked a little more modern/cooler but they are fine design wise and I am here for the experience the headphone provides me.

**edit** they are going back. They are huge, look ridiculously large on my head. And would require a headphone amp and longer cable. bringing the total to close to $800. Not for me. What are you using to drive these? I just got a pair, and plugged it in to my emotiva TP1 and they sound awe full!! The i got a cheap fiio and plugged to pc and they sound way better. But Im sure Im not using them to their full potential. What do you recommend? Im on a budget. Dont need a DAC. And it will be desktop only, not portable.

I have found that there are a few people saying it's uncomfortable for people who wear glasses. Specifically when moving your head apparently the headphones make contact with glasses frames due to a lack of seal or clamp. Wondering if @cheapaudioman can comment on this? Personally, I was choosing between the Hifiman edition Xs vs the Aeon Closed X. Since I prefer closed headphones for some isolation and pure comfort, I went ahead with making an order for the Aeon closed X, but I'm still curious as to how much better the XS sounds. Since you raved about the Aeon RT (which is pretty much the same as the Aeon closed X as far as I can tell) it would be cool to see a review comparing the two headphones.
