Randy, a few comments on this. I think that the tighter bass on the Elac is because the port is quite a bit smaller which results in a more sealed like sound versus ported. I think that the better imaging on the Elac is from it's closer driver spacing making it closer to a coaxial speaker than the Klipsch and would be superior in a nearfield situation. The cabinet resonance on the Klipsch can be improved with some NoRes which is one of the improvements that Danny at GR Research recommends for the RP600M. His suggested modifications can put the RP600M in a high end sound class. Finally, I think your distaste for the KEF LS50 is because you value bass more than pristine and neutral sound as well as price value, and I am right there with you on that. Great job as usual.

Yes, a good catch. That the Klipsch is better on female voices! I have a pair RP-600m heavily modified though, but I enjoy females vocalist tremendously. Now I got a hint of why that may be.. Think the litle lower crossover point @1500Hz compared to Elac @2200Hz may influence a little bit.
@cheapaudioman3 жыл бұрын
How are they modified and did it change the sound significantly? Was it the GR Research modification?
@AmazonasBiotop3 жыл бұрын
@@cheapaudioman Yes it is a GR research modification: kzbin.info/www/bejne/l17RpomEhMp2jrs Address the cabinet issue and so on. It is just comfortable to know that the caps is matched (individually measured and matched with the same value in the kit). No electrolyte no sand cast no iron core and floss gauge inductors no PCB, half number of solder points, tube connectors so no ferrous material in the signal path. Cables directly solder to drivers. And nores on the inside of the cabinet. How does it sound before and after. To be honest I can't say.. I just got in 2020 this dedicated new listening space that I did not have any dedicated before and needed to be in the living room there I use B&W 804. So I did not had much time with them beforehand and I have done a lot alteration rapidly to get the space as good sounding as possible (several changes at once). So not only fixing the RP-600m I also built my own mono blocks that is car battery driven (like GR research use and have), built sound absorbers and bass traps, installed DSP plus many more things. So I can't tell what the difrence is when the whole rig were in a flux state. I actually thought that I maybe should buy another pair second hand just to be able to compare.. I just think that doing all that modifications with higher quality parts can't make it to sound worse anyway.. But it is not like that you get a completely new speakers at the end of the day it is the same drivers anyway. But I will probably not do that because of time constraints, I rather put time and money on the current projects to finish them instead. I am building two passive open baffle 18" and I have a modification of my TT to do so I can adjust VTA on the fly. I just stumbled upon your video and I like it! Have a nice weekend.

@@cheapaudioman please do that. I would try to get to hear his OB speakers. When that type of speaker is not easy to audition in the first place. And to get a grip on if OB is something is to your liking and something to pursue. That is good experience and knowledge to get in my opinion. I think it is good to save up and build something reel amazing. Instead pouring in money to upgrade the RP-600m that is still will be a box speaker if you like the OB type. Unfortunately I am in Sweden and for me it gets little bit of a hurdle to buy the OB cabinet and ship them from one guy and buy the rest from GR research and ship those plus add import taxes on top.. And I need to do all of the work, yes I am maybe little bit handy. But paint and finishing is not up to snuff. But if you like what you hear and Danny can probably recommend painters and such if you can't do it yourself. And when you live in USA and can just pick it up then it is a different value proposition I think. :)

Had the 160m's which were similar to the 600's but currently own the DBR62'S. I will say that the Elacs demand proper speaker stands, well isolated, if you want to get the best bass response out of them. In my room, the Elacs had much better bass response than the Klipsches despite being close spec-wise. I agree with your sentiments though, you really can't go wrong with either speaker. Also, both are very transparent regarding equipment matching and scale very well.
@cheapaudioman3 жыл бұрын
The more speakers I review the more that I start to disregard low end specifications. While the speaker may hit that number and probably does, the balance of the speaker's sound signature would prevent anyone from getting that out of the speaker without it becoming shouty and overtly bright. The way the crossover is designed is so much more important that the low end specifications so that when one does hit that lower end it's balanced with the rest of the sound signature. I've always felt that Elac does that very well. Thanks so much for watching. I've got a pair of RP400m's on their way which is very exciting.

I choose these Elacs over other speakers on my computer desk, first they are not as deep (27,5cm similar to Edifier S2000MKIII) as these Klipsch, second, front bass port. I run them with Loxjie A30. Very happy with overall SQ. I also tested KEF Q100 which was too bright and fatigue with higher volumes and weak on bass, also tested MA Bronze 2. These Elacs are well balanced neutral speakers with big power on hit. On Metallica - Metallica (Black Album) they are perfect, not fatigue, and very detailed. I also noticed as Randy said treble goes live when volumes are bit higher.

Just found your channel, cool comparison! One thing to note though, bi-amping on a AVR isn't really going to offer any improvements (which you noticed). When you see watt measurements from AVR they're usually only quoting 2 channels running. Even though they have a configuration option in the AVR to bi-amp really at that point you're just splitting the power from the power supply to more amps but won't see any real improvements. Can always use pre-outs to another power amp though.
@cheapaudioman3 жыл бұрын
Appreciate the heads up on that. My consumption of power is a fraction of the actual rated power of the amp or receiver. Id estimate that my usage is less than 4 watts based on the SPL distance and room gain and sensitivity of my speakers. Some day I’d like to get two discreet amps and see if I can tell a difference.

I've gone from the RP600M to the DBR62 and lived for over a year with the 600M. The Klipsch are more lively, but come with a caveat to their cabinet faults. Also the driver isn't as seamlessly crossed. They are more sensitive and louder and like to party. The ELAC are significantly better in natural tendency to just show you around the performance and not shout it. I considered redoing the crossover and dampening per gr-research but just decided the ELAC were a better deal as soon as I compared them. I bought both used so, there's that too. I bypassed the tweeter crossover with a copper MiFlex cap on the ELAC as was rewarded with another layer of grit being removed from the top end and yet another widening of the sound stage. Totally worth the $40. I drive them with a 25 watt Firstwatt Aleph J and they do just fine for the 70-80db I listen at in the evenings.
@garysmith84553 жыл бұрын
I too would like to add......., but the side panel on the Klipsch is larger in both height and depth, and of course it will resonate LOWER then a smaller slab of wood. (think of a marimba) Get another speaker of the same size for each model, and try that again, I would certainly like to see more 'knock' tests lol. One little suggestion: perhaps clean those grease/handling marks off the cabinets before the video presentation, they were easily seen. (good thing they were not gloss finish!). Thanks.

Overall dynamics and impact , Randy??? I have a hard time believing most similar passive speakers best the horns dynamically. Presence with movies and rock?? Yet another typically stronger characteristic of traditional Klipsch

I really want to klipsch but I keep hearing the mid range sucks how do I make it better file want to purchase possibly the 500 m. They will be used for music when I want to listen to my music loud and I listen to all sorts from rock , country to Old school rap and home theater use. I also would need a built-in bracket such as the clips do Unless you can point me in the right direction to the overall speaker. I have 2 subs so the bass isn't primarily

Hallo comunity.

Nowadays the price of high-quality speakers has plummeted compared to comparable qualities back in the 80-90's. With the above speakers, one can really enjoy high-quality sound at relatively low and fiar price. Maybe on day you should review really expensive speakers(>$10,00) and give your impression compared to the low priced ones.

What I hope to do is to develop a relationship with some manufacturers and have them convince me that their 1000 or more speakers are better than the 500 speakers.

some music has different tone of bass mids treble some songs cut offf at 40 60 some go down to 20 i agree with vocals though klipsch has amazing vocals and i love alanis morisette she does sound amazing on klipsh i like higher vocals i have issues with rock and country having harsh trevble and highs on the i e s and male female vocals no mater how high low they hit and guitars sound harsh on some songs on klipsh i feel elac a guitar sounds way better than a klipsh depending on how you ajust it on some mixes i prefer the johnny cash version verson but i like nine inch nails too some i disaggree some songs mix the guitar differently like guitar solos are usually focused on center channel metalica sound better with klipsch and yahmaha is a very bad combo too flat no matter how you ajust it so use elac for a flat reciever like yahmaha i prefer onkyo reciever i wander if elac or would sound better on onkyo vs yahmaha yahaha because onkyo marrantz denon pioneer might be to much for i feel that elac is better for the songs that i feel dont sound goood on klipsch sound worse cuz i have klipsch i dont like polk audios low end and they dont have high end subwoofer to go with high end towers klipsch is way more affordable and there dolby atmos speakers are fuller sounding cuz they have a woofer and tweeter dont know if elac does this too
