Creating linear bearing blocks for a DIY CNC machine that function similarly to their more expensive counter parts. Also the first part of DIY CNC machine series, stay tuned for the future videos.
Everything in this video besides the bearings can be either 3D printed or purchased from a local hardware store.

I love this design! But, instead of spacers, could you use a longer bolt assembly and a jam nut? That might give you a finer adjustment ability.

Very happy to see your work...I'm building same for my own diy cnc.....i guess using eccentric cam follower bearing might solve your problem with alignment

Happy to hear that. I’ll look into using an eccentric cam follower if issues arise, thank you

Tbh I've desgined a 3D printed cnc. I would not recommend essentially nuts... I would recommend a preloaded metal berring though and a single peice printed tool head I'm nit developing my cnc any further, it's pretty nice as is. I have a new one though in the works that's concrete and aluminum extrusion

Coolest thing I think I’ve ever seen in my life. Only thing that may top it was the birth of my child.

Can you tell me whats the precision... Like why you said in one of the comments that its not that precise..... Whats the error 1mm?
@profaciprints
@profaciprints Ай бұрын
The lack of precision comes from the TPU prints that are attached to the bearings. So for low load applications (negligible deflection), the precision is whatever the compounded error is for two TPU bearing sleeves from your printer. For my case probably ~0.5-1mm or so

Can something like this be used in a DIY sit standing desk?
@profaciprints
@profaciprints Жыл бұрын
Yes! After designing and making this type of linear guide, I have realized that this mechanism is best applied when precision is not the main goal. Specifically, if you were making a standing desk i would modify the design of the blocks that go on either side of the rail to have a singular large imbedded nut and use probably a 3/8 in bolt with a cover cap to lock the desk at the desired height after adjusting. And if you wanted to go above and beyond, u could add a counterweight with a pulley system to offset the weight when adjusted the desk. You could also automate this easily with a few motors and a control board!

save some money and buy linear rails. load index will never match linear rail but nice for low load application

This is not very good at all I commend you for trying to make something but the cost of accurate components have gone down in price so much this reinventing the wheel is silly jus stop for your own sanity. You might be who are you to blah blah blah I've built and designed several cnc machines 3d printers laser cutters etc. And I work full time as a hardware designer if you don't have the money at least use the replacement wheel kits for 3d printers that will get you in the open builds machine territory. Not great but a working machine you can build from.

I appreciate the feedback. If I wanted to buy off the shelf components for every aspect of this project, I could do that. However, the goal of this project and all my other projects is to explore the engineering design process (as you learn more from that) and portray it in a different way than usual. Hence, the rationale of exploring all aspects of CNC machines components, including linear rails. Additionally, most of my projects are made from components lying around to convey that making things is not a super daunting task, if you do not know where to start.

@@profaciprints good luck I've been all down this road it leads to disappointment. the most important aspect of design engineering is to identify the problem and your not there yet with this design you have to constrain the rails in every direction force will be applied and avoid friction without introducing slop have a look at the crossfire plasma cutters linear bearing approach for some ideas. Best of luck.
