I've got a Powerbase 14.4 volt "Made in China" drill I bought in 2001 for about £25 Has Hammer function, forward & reverse and 8 Torque settings and although I don't use it professionally its had a hard life. Came in a nice plastic storage case along with various drill bits. Battery is showing its age but other than that its fine.

I have a cheapo 720W hammer drill from B&Q which I bought in about 2004 for under £30 with an entire drill-bit set of 50bits and box. Used at work for about 5 years and since have used it at home to this very day. Nothing broken in all that time and it is still strong as a horse. Have to dial it back with almost all masonry bits because it will destroy them easily. I have abused it before taking out 4 and 6 inch screws because the amount of torque it proves will wrench them out or tear the head clean off. Sometimes you just stumble on a gem!

Most my tools are lower end to mid range Makita or Dewalt stuff but I did buy a Black and Decker 650w Hammer Drill for £25. Although it is only used for DIY I have fitted a kitchen with it, replaced a floor and it is used every couple of months for general DIY tasks when I need to drill into engineering bricks. It is still as good as new and even the chuck seems very good quality. On the other hand I have also bought cheap tools that have blown up after just a few minutes of use. It is the luck of the draw I guess.

When you can fit 25,000 of them in a shipping container, and it costs less than 4000 pounds to ship the container, thats only 16 pence per drill. Thats why Scottish salmon are frozen and shipped to China for filliting, then shipped back to the UK. Cheaper than paying UK workers to do the cutting.

The trouble with a lot of these sorts of battery powered Chinese tools is that after 6/9-months the battery longevity tanks. As I believe you found out with your cheap Chinese rechargeable batteries. ...Then good luck finding replacement batteries (it'll probably work out cheaper to buy a whole new tool).

this is the pinch... I had exactly that problem with those cheap AA rechargeable batteries except they were just crap straight out the packet. didn't even put up an effort, so its a valid point, but i'm not entirely sure the drill will last 6 months so maybe not a problem ;-) lol

Can't complain about it for the price. If it'll take that level of use & abuse for 2 weeks and still work it should last a DIY person quite some time. My Dad balked at my Mom getting an entry-level DeWalt because it wasn't the same spec as the one he has. She told him 'I don't need to build a house with it!', and it was still 4x the cost of this one, which I suspect would have worked for her just fine.
