My great aunt who lived to be 98 years old, washed her clothes by hand in a wash tub in the kitchen sink she did that from childhood. Her clothes were in excellent condition. Afterwards she would line dry them outside. She would do the same with her sheets and when I would go over there to sleep her sheets were soft they were in very good condition and they smelled like something just beautiful.
