Hey, since you love beans so much, you should look up "Updrögt Bohnen" on Wikipedia. "Updrögt Bohnen" translates to dried beans and it’s an east-frisian (a small region in the Northwest of Germany) dish, that takes a lot of prep, but is absolutely delicious. I’d love to see you make and rate it.

When you did the "24 days of Christmas food around the world" series, I was so glad that you chose Vanillekipferl for Germany because the Holiday dinner can vary a lot between different regions. So, you can easily tread on someone's foot when talking about traditional German food. For example, in East Germany people did not have as much fancy food as the people in West Germany, who were actually able to afford it (they had a lot of food, just not as much fancy one). I always ignore recipes with venison, boar, canard or turkey, because I am not able to afford it. No, in my East German family, the typical Christmas feast always consisted of roast hare with red cabbage and Thuringian-style potato dumplings. It's not a several-course meal, and it doesn't need to be because it is still a very special dish for a family with not a lot of money.

I respect the parsnip hype but what people are really sleeping on are rutabagas ( or swedes) I rarely ever see them used in any recipes outside of my country and im just wondering why??
@lynnejamieson206311 ай бұрын
I’m not sure which country you are in/from but they are part of Scotland’s national dish. They’re known as turnips in Scotland (and many other areas throughout the UK too), which are colloquially known as neeps, Scotlands national dish is haggis (a type of large sausage/pudding made from sheep offal, oats and spices), neeps (another word for Swedish turnip but in this instance served mashed with butter and ground pepper) and tatties (another word for potatoes but served mashed for this dish). It is also very common to have something called tumshy (I’m not 100% sure of the spelling as it is a dish only really cooked at home and as such, I’ve never seen the word written down) which is Swedish turnip and carrots boiled together until softened, drained (retaining the cooking water for making gravy) and mashed with butter and ground pepper…one of my favourite sides as a kid. Swedish turnip/swede/rutabaga/neeps/turnip…whichever word you name this vegetable, is also a relatively common ingredient in stews throughout the UK…and I wouldn’t be surprised if the Irish used a fair amount of them in the late autumn/winter/early spring too.
@jazkupazku11 ай бұрын
@@lynnejamieson2063 Ah I see! I'm from Finland and we use them in soups a lot too! I just never see them used in recipes from english or american websites. Glad to hear scotts and brits love 'em too^^ Now that Christmas is coming a lot of people hear eat what's called a rutabaga casserole. It's rutabaga, eggs, cream, a little syrup and spices baked in an oven and served along with other casseroles and christmas ham:)
@lynnejamieson206311 ай бұрын
@@jazkupazku that sounds lovely, I may have to give it a try. I think in general us Northern European countries tend to be overlooked largely when it comes to our cuisine, especially the everyday stuff that rarely make restaurant appearances (though that is obviously not the case when it comes to haggis, neeps and tatties, as it’s available all over Scotland). Maybe it’s because a lot of it is comfort foods with a lot of root vegetables and so not necessarily as pleasing to the eye as that produced by our Mediterranean cousins. Then of course the UK has a now unfounded reputation for bad food, which is a rumour consistently spread by those from the US that have never visited here or those who feel that to be classed as good food everything savoury must be over seasoned and over spiced (of the chilli variety) because why would you actually want to taste anything other than salt or chilli peppers…though many of our desserts are accepted.

Dans certain coin du Québec, on appelle ça un Cipâte ou un Cipaille.

I'm from Montreal andI grew up with tourtiere. But cabbage? No. That's Eastern European. Like the basic meals I came across in Ukraine that featured a heap of inedible cabbage and a mass of boiled buckwheat like a breakfast porridge sitting beside it on the plate, both served with a kind of pale mystery meat 'cutlet'... very depressing! I feel about cabbage the way most French people do about turnips. Not fit for human consumption.
