Cheapest Surplus Rifle of 2024 | Cleaning & Restoration |

This rifle was a summer project me and my grandpa did over a couple weeks. WE ARE NOT DONE YET. This is part one of a series. However there is very little to do. Maybe a minor deep clean to get rid of the extra cosmoline and work on the stock. We have considered a new stock from a inert training rifle but I doubt us going that Route. There are still enormous quantities in Indian inventory though no longer issued or used....most lie stored away in state police armouries. Some were also issued to Forest rangers in the past. In certain border states, along, these were distributed along with 303s to Village Defense parties with whom they lie largely unused due to lack of useable ammunition.

If memory serves me. That has been modified into a .410 shotgun that was allowed for Indians to use during the British colonial period in India. Those .303 mod. cartridges are .correct

Yes sir, They saw a lot of police use. A lot of the good ones were imported in early 2000s and 2010s. But recently century arms just got a bunch of them (not in good condition). I think they ended up at centerfire systems which this is a example of. Anyways thanks for commenting and watching, have a great day!

We found the ammo at sarco. A lot of it was imported in 2020 but sadly the price went up. It used to be 50 cents a round but it’s at dollar fifty now. Good luck on your project and have a great day!

Yea, i should’ve. A new video will come up soon at a more proper range. We’ll probably shoot 15 yards, 25 yards, and 50 yards. This video was just pretty much just making sure it works. Thanks for watching and have a great day!

How does a 20th century bolt action rifle become a musket. If the bore is worn out, it needs a barrel. A replacement part. Muskets are muzzle loaders. Not breech loaded weapons.

Honestly I don’t know. I believe that’s what they must of just classified it in India. They did mill out the barrel it isn’t like it’s a damaged barrel with grooves corroded. It should be just classified as smooth bore but I’m just going off of what info I could find. Thanks for commenting and have a great day!

The were smoothbored for use as police riot guns. Now most of us can't picture a .410 as a serious riot gun but apparantly the Brits ( or Indians) figured it was good enough. I suppose with a buckshot load it could be and it wouldn't be too much gun for an urban environment like a full-bore military rifle would be.. Out of curiousity how do those .410 brass cartridges compare in size with a standard .410 shotgun cartridge? For example could you use a 2 1/2 inch or 3 inch .410 cartridge in that Enfield?

@@Plinkster_Restoration I should have added earlier the term "musket" as it applies to this firearm was a Brit term of convenience for a conversion like this, i.e. rifle to smoothbore. Now here's a bit of trivia for you. Right up through WW2 in both the American and British armies death by firing squad was referred to formally as "Death by musketry." No lie! Some old terms die hard!

Barrels for Enfields are not hard to find and get the can even be found in 308 and 30 06 and of course 303 British and I've even heard of 7.6 x 54 Russian apart of a lend lease arrangement, brand new barrels are still. Produced in India to British spects

Honestly I was thinking earlier in the project if ammo become more scarce we could always swap to a 303. However now that you mention it you could probably swap a barrel to the Russian caliber. I’ll also do some research on if 7.62 ishapore nato barrels would fit on a mk3 receiver. Thanks for the ideas and have a great day!
