In this video I will share an inspirational human story. While cycling is not the centrepiece of this video post (as it often is on this Cycling KZbin Channel), it was the activity of bike riding that connected Thor and I. Additionally, it was bike riding that gave Thor a new passion in life. A passion he once thought was not possible.
Thor Bloomfield suffers from a life-threatening disorder called cystic fibrosis. In basic terms, cystic fibrosis (CF) affects the digestive system and or the lungs. It will block the body’s ability to either take in oxygen and/or nutrients (from food) and deliver important elements throughout the body.
According to Thor, there are varying levels of CF and the way it impacts people. The average life expectancy for someone living with CF is around 40 but is constantly improving thanks to modern medicine.
The way CF impacted Thor was mucus build up in the lungs, affecting his airways and his ability to deliver oxygen throughout the body.
Facing death, Thor decided to accept the doctor's recommendation to have a lung transplant, a very technical and risky operation.
After 2 false starts, Thor received a new set of lungs. A successful transplant that has seen his lung function go from a life-threatening 17% to 92% in less than 1 year. With his new set of lungs, Thor took on the challenge to compete in the Australian transplant games, where he recently won two gold medals. One for cycling!
Thor's story is both inspirational and insightful. I learned a lot about CF, transplants, and human endeavour in this interview. I want to thank Thor Bloomfield for sharing his story on my KZbin Channel and Bike Chaser.

Great video Cam. Thank you for sharing Thor's story. Having been through a major event myself - I totally get where Thor is coming from about sharing his story and highlighting the wonderful work our Hospitals, medical teams and Nurses do. We have so much to be thankful for. (Ride on Thor).

@@CamNicholls thank you, yes all great. Heart attack and quintuple bypass 20 months ago. If I wasn't fit from riding I wouldn't have survived the attack. Riding a bike is a life saver.

An inspirational story. It gave me a huge perspective on any so called adversities I reckon I’ve had to deal with. Thanks for sharing such a personal experience Thor. And to everyone else, if you aren’t already signed up, get your name on the donor register, and tell your family that’s what you want!!!

@@CamNicholls it certainly does, middle of the year my result was 28% lung function, with the help of using zwift I am hitting 120 + miles a week at an average 18-20 mph, that may all change as here in the UK we are heading towards winter and my emphysema gets worse in cold weather, but my lungs feel so much stronger now, it's going to be interesting to see how I react to the cold.
