Chechnya bans music deemed too fast or too slow • FRANCE 24 English

The Russian republic of Chechnya has taken the rare step of banning music it deems either too fast or too slow. Officials there have outlawed songs that don’t conform to new rules which specify their beat per minute, which excludes most of Western pop. The move is meant as a way to preserve the region’s culture, as Monte Francis explains.

Even if a 240 BPM tune played at 6/8 is perceived only to be at 3/4 it'll still have a speed of 120 BPM and be too fast. To "preserve their culture" Ramsan Kadyrov basically has outlawed Chechen culture as far as music goes. And the innumerable times he has danced to those tunes will now be illegal footage.

The problem is that their own traditional Chechnyan dance music is... extremely fast. F.ex. the popular "Lezginka" (played at 6/8 beat) is typically played at 240 beats per minute. Even if you perceive it as played at 3/4 beat it'll still be 120 BPM, thus too fast and thus illegal. Ramsan Kadyrov has basically prohibited their own traditional music. PS. Chechnya's national anthem is normally played at 78 BPM. That's too slow. Their own anthem is now illegal.
