So this was shot in the Icamole Desert about an hour north of Monterrey, Mexico. The ladies in the video are TW, their mom, a cousin and a friend. They originally didn’t intend on the fabric of the structure to be waving in the wind. When they returned home, they were covered in dust and sand. There is no such thing as “the Mexican Language.” Mexicans speak Spanish among many other languages. As with all Spanish-speaking countries the language has some differences in vocabulary and usage from other countries - especially with colloquialisms and slang. TW did a whole song about being criticized for not singing in Spanish - Narcisista. I’m glad you have recovered from alcoholism.

We all have songs in our past that when we hear it years later, we are transported back to that time or moment when we first heard the song. The Warning’s Martirio made me cry the first time I heard it. My mom and her side of the family all spoke Spanish. When she passed away three years ago Spanish is no longer heard in the house. Martirio made me realize just how much we had lost. The lyrics of the song fit my mom’s struggles and her strength, raising five kids on her own, dad worked overseas for most of their married life. Being the oldest I saw mom in her darkest hours, but not once did she hesitate or turn away from her responsibilities. Everytime I hear Martirio I remember another moment with mom. Over 50 years of memories I had long forgotten. Martirio brings it back, piece by piece. When Dany lets out that mournful wail at the end, I see mom in her darkest hours. I miss mom very much, and I love The Warning for bringing her back to me. Congratulations on your sobriety. I still hope that my dad will slow down on his drinking.

Congratulations brutha!! It ain't easy. The last time I drank was August 19th, 1990. I woke up that morning UNDERNEATH my buddy's 72 Nova at a Music Festival. I had my guitar in one hand and a half empty fifth of Jack Daniels in the other. Lying there in the heat of an August morning, covered in sweat, puke and my own urine, a decision was made. I left that festival and hitch hiked to a recovery center one town away. I haven't had a drop since. I would love to tell you that I never want a drink. But I would be lying. It gets easier for sure but there are days (few and far between now) when I can taste it, like actually taste it. I just remind myself that my life is so much better today. I'm going to celebrate 34 years this August and I always tease my kids that "we're celebrating with a keg party this year!" LOL! In all honesty I would have been gone along time ago had I not quit when I did. AND the worst part? .........I never would have heard The Warning!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm proud of you man!

Great reaction! Martirio is one of my favorites. For me as a "Gringo" from the other side of the world, it somehow pours mexican soul. Congratulations to your four years and I am happy that you have found a way to laugh about it. This may be bold, but since you mentioned addiction, maybe you want to react to Black Holes sung by Pau at the Dakota Bar and see how you relate to this. 🙂

I think the overall message of this tune is "sarcastic rebuke". Have you ever known someone who is doing something stupid, and you tell them they're stupid, but they keep doing it, and finally in frustration you just say, "OK, fine - if that's what you want to do, go ahead... but don't then friggin' _complain_ about it as you're doing it!!" It's like that. Without getting too involved, I _was_ the subject of this song for far too many years. And yes, I'm sure my own friends were fed up with me crying "woe is me!" all the time about a situation of my own making. Fortunately, I finally did wise up and correct my choices... but I spent WAY too many years in love with my own "martyrdom". I just wish this song had been around back then; it might have made me snap out of it sooner. Sadly, I think the lady's _parents_ were teens back then and probably hadn't even met yet... 😋

Rudy, their manager, has experience in Hollywood. I believe he worked on Titanic. TW have found a way to create pretty high quality videos on a shoestring budget stemming from their years as an independent band. Martirio is just a beautiful song complimented by an equally stunning video.

Congratulations. Last time I got drunk was thirty years ago when I completely embarrassed myself, wound up on my boss's bathroom floor, and ultimately dragged myself into my house doing the walk of shame when I saw my two children waiting up for me with my wife. I'll never forget the looks on their faces. I wouldn't classify myself as having a drinking problem, but I did drink, and I haven't been drunk since that night. What I learned is that alcohol can be extremely destructive for me if I allow it to be, and I admire anyone who manages to get sober. Stay strong.

in the OMV, the covering over the building frame was not supposed to be shredded... it was assembled whole but the winds had other ideas so DPA/TW and the team decided not to fight it... the flapping canvas makes for a nice atmosphere and works pretty well for this for the video and what the song represents... this is not the first time they've had to deal with the winds, either... one or two of their other MVs that were shot outside were also on windy days... their Foo Fighters cover of *The Pretender* comes to mind... there were also comments about how the blowing sand stung and caused them to feel like they had a sunburn... they did a great and professional job, that's for sure 😹 TWA ⚡🤘😸🤘⚡ TWA

Love the production on this video, The Warning know how to get it done. As for your story, as an old Rock musician I’ve heard and seen about a dozen variations on this theme. I quit drinking for 28 years, so congratulations on your 4 years, really, it can be done. I agree, I enjoyed some aspects of drinking and kind of miss certain parts. I think those that say they miss nothing of their drinking days are either lying or were never drinking for the right reasons to begin with. But, I consider it like a bad relationship with a person, it’s okay to miss the good times, though you definitely don’t want to forget the bad ones so you’re never stupid enough to though that crap again. I think The Warning are addiction enough for me in my old age.

Congrats on 4 years. Just over 7 for me, not alcohol but other stuff. The part of this video that always gets me is the slow motion parts of the video, if you notice they are still playing on the beat and in time with each other. That means they had to change the tempo of playing when recording but not look like they were playing faster. If that makes sense.

Martirio in Mexican Spanish also translates to torment. So to me the lyrics read as SELF-torment or martyrdom. People in perpetual “victimhood”. “You suffocated with your own hands”. “In your martyrdom (torment) drown”. Of course as always they leave the interpretation up to the individual listener & their unique experiences. “Music is that one companion …the one who will know exactly how you’re feeling.” Daniella Villarreal 2017

Martirio = Victimhood. Apparently the wind tore the shelter to shreds. Serendipity! Recoded at double speed for smooth slo-mo. My favourite Warning song that I yell as best I can when I see them live. Your story is poignant. It means a lot.

Love this song. Has a very anthem like quality. Very powerful. As far as the lyrics go, TWA will either confirm or correct me but their mom helps write the song lyrics in Spanish. The girls say writing in Spanish is much more difficult with the grammar structure. I can see on Spotify that Monica Velez (mom) has a writing credit on the new song Que Mas Quieres

Regardless of the language, Martirio is just a beautiful song; I have NO idea what I'm singing, but you simply can't help yourself. While the Teatro Metropolitan version is amazing of course, my favorite is the ladies performing Martirio in the SiriusXM studio. Narcisista, about those who put TW down for writing and singing in English, has a Mexican slang word. Malinchista is a term some Mexicans use to describe other Mexicans who show a preference for foreign things, speak gushingly of the order and tidiness to be found abroad, or are critical of Mexico and Mexican ways vis-à-vis their foreign counterparts. So, na na na na na...I'm not crazy or a malinchista, sings Pau
