Hi Adam . Back in the mid 1970's l experienced the "separation" in my 1969 series 1 XJ6 by chance . I was in a hurry to get to a squash match , 7miles on a very twisty road in 6 minutes !! I entered a very tight left bend at about 50 mph and as l rounded it the Jaguar suddenly tilted much more than normal .......much more ! I knew instinctively what had happened and was fortunate that the offending bend was the last before l could sprint the final 2 miles without fear. I drove the rest of the weeekend at a much calmer pace and drove to work on the Monday to have new mountings fitted . I was an apprentice panelbeater at Torquay's main Jaguar dealer ! As l recall 4 mountings cost £8 trade and a drink for my friend ! Thanks Adam .

Ha, this takes me back to 1989 and my first XJ-S. I went to replace the rear trailing arms and found all four mounts broken. 'What the hell' I thought, and dropped the rear axle, rebuilt the handbrake, replaced the diff oil seals, brake pads etc. At the time it seemed daunting but compared to modern cars, it seems so easy.

Looks pretty simple. I helped a friend rebuild his IRS but he put it back in the car on his own. Thanks

Nice video Adam. A few years ago I had my XJ6 on jack stands overnight, only to find out in the morning the IRS dropped due to failed mounts! That's when I found out that dropping the IRS and putting it back is pretty easy to do.

AHH The old cradle rubbers, replaced many over the years on every series 1 I ever owned back in the 70s.

That's a scary one. Go over a bump, the IRS takes off on its own, and all of a sudden, rear-wheel steering is pointing you at something it shouldn't.

Yes could end very badly!

Good video! I replaced all four of mine with EURO brand... had one of them completely seperate 6 months later.. OEM is the way to go.

After watching this video I was encouraged to try this without disconnecting anything from the IRS, using only a jack and axle stands. I've successfully done one side of the car so far. There was just enough space to get the new mounts in with the IRS at full droop, only supported by things like the radius arm, exhaust, the mounts on the far side.... hope I didn't bend anything. The reason for replacing the mounts is that I happened to notice one separating while I was under the car, fortunately before the IRS fell off. ;)

Excellent, have been considering replacing mine, probably original since 86, doesn’t look so scary a job now….

It’s not too bad

When I dropped the IRS on my E-type there were shims either / one side or the other for rear wheel alignment. Not so on this Jag!

Seems amazing that the whole rear suspension transmission and braking assembly is attached to the car with 8 x 10mm (?) bolts going through the inner wing ?
@alexandrecouture24622 жыл бұрын
Hi! It is an inner wing, but it also has a structural frame. The "radius arm", is also holding it and it probably the one taking the mechanical energy form acceleration and braking.

if all four mounts are bad, How does the IRS not fall out?
@alexandrecouture24622 жыл бұрын
Interesting video! The IRS on the XJ40 is a bit different and does not have these mounts and it also has no radius arm. Maybe they understood the possible danger?

Hi Adam, great vid, can you do a vid on replacing the mounts on the Front suspension cheers Dean

Interesting that there are lower outward facing "flanges" that don't bolt to anything. 🤔

They're most likely the same part for all 4 locations, hence the unused holes

I guess you get a warning when the rubber mounts fail and the IRS is off: the loud exhaust!... All kidding aside though, that does not seem like a well thought engineering unless replaced before they fail.
@LivingWithAClassic2 жыл бұрын
It will be a good loud warning! The odd thing is that they last as well as they do for year. Replacing every 20-30 years isn't too bad.

That's why I prefer an X-type, Adam. There are no such gadgets in an X-type suspension. 🙂

Great that I got an X-type!

Hi, where did you source the V mounts from? difficult to find a supplier who sells good quality/OEM ones & I read many stories of poor quality aftermarket ones splitting apart

Hi Adam, unsure if this thread is still active with answers before I post, is it still question and answers active about Vanden Plas?
