Honestly, I’ve forgotten so many times that I’m in mono that when I realize it I’ve made everything sit in the mix with each other that when I switch to stereo I’m like 🔥🔥🔥. Another great tip I have for y’all is to put a Linear EQ and cutting from 200 to 4K and boost accordingly to your mix. Remember, Mid range is where the Soul is at. I would even parallel these frequencies to accommodate the main buss.

A great tip I picked up from Tony Maserati was to start your mix in mono and listen out of only one speaker at a very low listening level--kind of like the focus idea that Streaky has suggested. After you've listened to the track a few times, set your rough static levels and start doing some EQing, sidechain, etc. to get the mix as clean and balanced as possible in mono. Once everything is clear and balanced to the ear in the mono, when you put it in stereo it's like icing on the cake! From that point as you add effects and pan, periodic checks back in mono help as a sanity check for translation. Hope I don't sound like a raving lunatic lol.

One thing that I make sure to do is ensure that all my lead instruments are mostly centered. That way there are minimal phase issues in mono. Also, I use reference tracks religiously, and use all sorts of consumer grade gear to see how the mix translates.

One tip i live by is to mix with the speaker/headphone volume low... i use Ableton and mix in headphones and have learned that the mix sounds most like the exported track with the volume set low rather than high. Lots of people complain that their export doesn't sound like what they hear in the DAW, one reason ( I believe) is they are listening to the mix loud... which in the DAW where all the tracks are separate and not compressed into a two track mix... you can hear and feel the space, in the DAW that is! Turning down the volume minimizes how the DAW will trick your ears and give you closer to what the export will sound like.

I save my mixes to Dropbox and then listen on my earbuds while I’m doing something else. When I’m not focused on actively listening, sometimes you can get myopia when your listening to something (especially my own stuff) and having it on in the background while your brain is elsewhere can sometimes bring something to the fore.

So I flip between mono (using Logic’s gain plug-in) and stereo, I play the track thru my MacBook Pro speakers and my last stage is taking my laptop into my car, connecting to the audio system via Bluetooth and checking if everything sounds a-ok. Works for me :)

Great tips, Streaky! I mix at very low levels. I get a better sense of how everything is balanced and it inspires decisions toward making things sound bigger and more interesting using dynamics, eq and effects, rather than just relying on a mix sounding good at full blast. It also lets me mix for hours without ear fatigue. I try not to reference on too many systems to avoid confusion, and get to know the few systems very well, as Streaky said. I mix on ATC’s which gets me to translatable mixes fast. I also spend time on HD650’s and when I get to a stopping point I put the mix on Google Drive and listen on my iPhone later. If it sounds good there, the mix is good, but I avoid making changes based on what I hear on that. Like to work a mono Auratone back into the workflow

Never really tried mixing in Mono (after 25 years), but when I master, I go for the more or less FLAT mix in the spectrum analyzer. I also wil listen to the mix on my iphone (BAD) speakers and in my car. Actually the REVEAL will come in my car. Often the frq below 100 hz comes out there. I go back in my studio and put a low band comp from 0-150 hz on and listen again.

I used Auratones in stereo for years and about 10 years ago I switched to mono and never looked back. Reference tracks are a key but I tend to use 4-5 reference tracks which are selected for bass response, dynamics, width, .etc. I feel like using a reference track from the same genre of musing I'm mixing makes me wanna copy that sound which I don't find helpful. Hope that makes sense. I forgot to add: Sonarworks is a must!

I keep my cell phone next to me at the mixing desk. I have a cheap set of earbuds and a mid-range set of earbuds. I will check my mix over the phone's speaker. And then over both sets of earbuds. I also have a set of old wouldn't Radio Shack style 2-way speakers. I have a very clean 100 watt amp that runs them. I will compare all of those and make decisions. I have listened to countless hours of my favorite music through all of those devices including my main studio monitors. The real trick is training your brain to understand how your mixes sound on your speakers as compared to the rest of the world. For example if I feel like my bass is really rocking the low end in my main monitor mix that I know I have too much bass for the car and other spots. The speakers that I use are comparable to an NS10 style speaker. If the sound is focused and tight it is good everywhere. If my bottom end seems to be jamming a little too much then I know that I will have a low-end heavy or muddy mix in a car setting. I mainly use the cell phone speaker for bass guitar and kick drum translation. If you can get the bass and kick to come through that little speaker along with the distorted guitars and vocals you are definitely winning. Thanks for all of your videos and tips. Love the channel. Cheers!

I use a really nice set of headphones in conjunction with my main monitors to listen for and compare bass in my mix. Back and forth between the headphones and the main monitors will usually do the trick. I can mix there and make the mix translate to that small speaker on my phone almost 100% of the time. I have been mixing on the same set of headphones and speakers for over 10 years. That's the real key.

I've made a few eq presets to test my mix on the Stereo Out channel. So i've got one with low and high cuts for how it would sound on an iPhone speaker and a few others. These are of course not realistic to how it would actually sound but it is a quick and easy tool for me to see if the bass for example is not audible anymore when being played through an iPhone. Cause i do think my music should work on everyday equipment too.

Great advices, thank you for this. A reality in the non-professional world for mastering engineers is that we often have to work from bad mixes in which all is too much glued together so basically the mastering process needs to "unglue" elements first before gluing them again (I know that normally we should go back to the mix to fix this but many artists mixing themselves their music can't make good mixes haha so it simply can be even worse if you ask them for another mix!). I'll often even master while listening / validating in mono for some the parts of the chain. In regards with the listening devices that personally use, I recently started to master directly on a Bose Revolve 360 speaker that I took a full year to tame with most music genres (was not an easy process), I kind of use the "quick master" method using only that speaker to make a very rough master as quickly as possible like in 30 minutes just to have the "rough sound" of it and get the feel of how I want the song to sound in general, otherwise if I work on details right from the start as I was doing in the past I loose the essence / feel of the song overall and I get lost in the process, putting focus only on details. Then I'll do a second round with professional headphones to work on details and I switch back and forth to different earbuds, the Bose speaker, cheap speakers and also a cell phone speaker until it sounds great everywhere, while also continuing to test in mono. I end up validating / making final adjustments (including stereo placement) in the car sometimes at minus 25 Celcius degrees 🎅❄⛄ (no worry, not while driving it 😂 but I make a final listening while driving so that I check if I can hear the music and vocals well even with the noises all around and make sure that it feels like a typical radio song) . It may be a weird methodology but I'm a weird guy and fully assume it 😁😂😂😂

Great content as usual Streaky. The Holy Grail of a mix translating! From freakquency trash 'mis'downs to the perfect industry standard that sounds great on anythng arcane know-how! Would people agree its getting easier with the current frreq' matching apps, such as Ozone? In my personal quest, the key to understanding how to achieve this aim, is in properly understanding what 'industry standard' really means. The answer lies in the test plot of pink noise, not to a razor's edge L - R slope (!) but within the general contour. Speaker manufacturers test their products to comply with low to high tonal and amplitude spl's. So if you mix with too much bottom end which then has a subtractive see- saw effect, the mix will sound out of whack on any system because its not in the p/n comfort zone. Its all about equal energy per octave and no wild freak-quency variations. There was a suoer brilliant upload some years back by engineer David Mellor, called 'The Frequency Balance of a hit Record'. Everyone should watch that! Applause for Mr. Mellor who I think did not fully appreciate the implications of his discovery. I e-mailed him and his reply confirned it! I"ve been waiting for him to upload 'The Frequency Balance of a fFop', but nothimg so far, LOL!

it's alot about knowing your speakers. I've tried all sorts and ended up using alesis M1 MK2 actives for the longest time, kept buying them when they inevitably died until I can't get them anymore - now I use Mackie MR8s and find they work well for me and my ear. In my experience dont f**k with subs or wideners.

I use a cheap radio to check my compression/dynamics on the Track. Nothing shows you the Sound of Compressors better than a Consumer-Radio. Stay Safe.

i make 1 minute music videos and only post it on facebook and insta. For me its important it sounds good on tiny speakers. I check on Laptop speakers, a cheap 99 euros huawei tablet, an Ipad pro, a Samsung Galaxy s6, a Huawei p20 and P30 light. Some great speakers, some not that well and it has to sound decent on the cheap ones.

Mixing in stereo fatigues my ears. I prefer to hear everything from the middle and let my ears focus.

Love these vids best content i’ve seen in a while! can you do a video on referencing tracks while mixing using a spectrum analyser like span. Possibly covering different shapes depending in genre? I have heard elsewhere it is good to take out low mid info as it is often muddy depending on the track.

It’s kind of bollocks all that to a point...you are better spending your time learning to hear than see the problems 👍

Nice 👍 one Streaky. Great advice for mixing. Does kii speakers in russel’s Williams might help to pilot in stereo ?

Well... I use cheap Sony earbuds for checking the mix. If mix sounds good on it - it sounds good mostly everywhere!

If you're making some kind of dance music, that involves DJ's mixing tracks together. Then either make a mix of tunes that you know sound good on a club system with the track you made. Or like me, ask a DJ friend to quickly mix a few tunes in a similar style to yours to see how they sound. And ask them if they had to do anything with the volume or tone controls on their mixer to get your track to sound like the others in the mix. It's not only good for the sound of your track, but also the arrangement. If the intro/outro makes it difficult to mix with other tracks, then DJ's are obviously going to be less inclined to play it. So, for example, if you cut the lows on the kick for a few bars on the intro and outro, it makes the DJ's job easier. They're mostly lazy and like to use as little concentration as possible when DJing, so they can spend more time ogling the females in the club.

@@Streaky_com It really is, I also use it to send a parallel signal to my subpac when using headphones (hd800 out of a lyra). I like this method as I found a good volume which sits well with the headphones turned up 4 notches exactly, keeping my headphone level exact each time achieving the same purpose as the imperium does with speakers
