If you're looking for an inexpensive, 4 channel scope, that does an amazing job. Here is a link to the autel mp408 that I used in this video.

I'd like to thank a gentlemen by the name of Justin Miller for uploading a plethora of known good waveforms. Without his contribution to the industry, it would be a lot harder for obtain these quality known good waveforms.

Nice diagnosis PJ and teaching your apprentice different non-intrusive diagnostic methods. With the customer declining a diagnosis I wouldn't have given him any diagnostic info to take back to the other shop. Let him learn the hard way the difference between a good diagnosis from an experienced tech and a bad diagnosis from an inexperienced shop. If someone else is going to get the job then the customer needs to pay you for the diagnosis!

Generally, I would agree. But I had to do a 35 minute handshake on the computer to get the car to start after replacing the ECM. and while the handshake was taking place, I installed my probes in cylinder and on the cam and crank sensor. So I felt as if I was sort of getting paid diag, plus I was helping my apprentice. In most other situations, I would have held onto that info, too. But I wanted this guy to see that it truly is possible to diagnose a vehicle properly, without guessing. I even told him that I filmed a youtube video on his vehicle lol.
@haywardsautomotive6156

@@VoltageDropDiagnostics Every situation is your call but as an owner when a customer refuses a diag and wants me just to install a part that's what they get. I install the part and if it didn't fix it I just did what the customer requested. I have a lot of $$ invested in tools, diagnostic equipment & shop equipment to give away diagnostic fees plus you get good at reading customers and know the ones that will go somewhere else after you give them the free diagnosis. Working at a dealership you have no overhead plus from what I understand from my Toyota dealership mechanic neighbor Toyota provides the Pico pressure transducer kit to their technicians and diagnostic scanners plus provide your tools and tool boxes. His personal tools and boxes are at his house b/c the dealership provides them. Love your videos and diags just a difference in opinions as a shop owner when it comes to diag fees.
@VoltageDropDiagnostics

@@haywardsautomotive6156 No, I actually 100% agree with your opinion. I also feel obligated to teach my apprentice, so that he doesn't turn into a hack lol Toyota did send the dealers a WPS but i have owned mine for over a year now. And I wish they bought me my toolbox lol That would be sweet. But I 100% agree with you. Normally, I wouldn't have hooked up a single tool. But there were other factors in play for me on this one.
@haywardsautomotive6156
@haywardsautomotive6156 5 жыл бұрын
@@VoltageDropDiagnostics Understand other factors in play and your apprentice is lucky to have you training him. If he absorbs what you are teaching him there is no doubt he will become an outstanding tech with your diagnostic skills. The Toyota dealership my neighbor works at each bay is set up with designated space allotments and they basically provide everything needed which works out good for new techs. They will have identical tools & diagnostic equipment as the tech next to them without spending any of their personal $$. They have an allotted open space for some of their own equipment but it is limited. The disadvantage is if a tech has his own big box and previously worked at an independent shop and lives in an apartment and have to pay storage fees but that could be an advantage also. This is a fairly new Toyota dealership but they are big on training according to my neighbor which is great. Keep the videos coming!!

The autel scope is a very good scope. It isnt a pico scope. But it does a very good job. As far as toyotas oscilloscope patterns. Be careful using those. Can I use this tool to fix the engine myself? How in your opinion should I go about it I dont want to let any builder fix it past engine assembly. Appriciate it man great work!

Great video PJ on 2 ways to verify timing. Obviously variable valve timed engines would require further diagnosis. Based on the evidence you had I'm guessing the customer either had no money left for further diagnostics or he is a complete numpty 🤣🤣🤣
@VoltageDropDiagnostics
@VoltageDropDiagnostics 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah. This could have been a stuck VVT gear,or a stretched chain, jumped tooth. A fully advanced exhaust gear would have put the timing right at 120 degrees after TDC, so it was close. I probably would have needed to remove the valve cover to be 100% sure.

@@VoltageDropDiagnostics Why I have so much work. They tried too do it themselves. Got a 2017 Ford Edge. They tried to change the plugs. One plug the threads stayed in. The rest of the plug come out. I'm drilling it out right now. As Ford has no known fix for the Eco Boost with this issue. So I broke out the Ford Triton kit. I warned them. This might not work on 4 valve heads. But I would still have to remove the head and replace it. So what the hell...I'm going to give it a shot. Got an update. Using the Calvan Triton spark plug kit. I got the new insert in there. Nice and tight. Big issue is drilling out the old spark plug threads. They are hard as stainless steel. So I use a carbide bit and it went fast. Then finished boring out the hole. Tap new threads. Install insert with plug. So it saved having to remove the head. Just take it slow. The 2.0 Eco Boost turbo is not a 4" stoke. It's 3.2" so don't let the depth gauge of the set bottom out...

I'm in the process of trying to get to the bottom of a no com issue with the ABS (skid control) module on a 2008 Prius. (ABS VSC lights on dash and brakes feel like they are only working hydraulically with no regeneration) I've got C1643 and C1644 DTCs stored in the Parking Aid module. Powers and grounds check out at the ABS module and I have a decent looking CAN signal at the module also. What have I missed? I don't want to make the call on a bad module and regret it! If you have a moment to let me know your thoughts it would be hugely appreciated! Keep up the great work. Cheers

I should have specified “i never see bad ENGINE computers go bad” I’ve seen more than a handful of the ABS modules around that year fail. If you did your checks. Have faith that they’re right.

@@VoltageDropDiagnostics many thanks for getting back to me 👍🏻 Great, I'm going to just double check the powers and grounds under load to be sure and then call the ECU. If I could ask just one more question...... Do these skid control ECUs need any kind of coding or are they just plug and play?
@VoltageDropDiagnostics
@VoltageDropDiagnostics 5 жыл бұрын
I’m fairly certain that they’re just plug and play.

Quick update. The skid control ECU has been swapped out with a good used unit and all is now good 😃👍🏻 Thanks again for the advice!

Do these have phasers that can affect the timing?
@VoltageDropDiagnostics
@VoltageDropDiagnostics 5 жыл бұрын
They do, and it’s possible that this could have had a stuck cam phaser. An active test could have been performed to prove that they do, or don’t work.

Part of me wonders if he was simply embarrassed at how wrong that PCM diagnosis was. My guess is that he will review the free diagnosis you gave him and do the repairs at the cheapest place he can find. Oh, and it's the same with Honda/Acura on computers. I've done maybe 4 or 5 PCMs in my career also. People who jump to PCM likely are throwing in the towel and don''t want to diagnose a problem anymore. Then recommend the PCM "as the next step to rule it out" and hope the customer declines and the car goes away.

I have a feeling that he is going to do exactly what you just said. And thats fine. But I also wouldn't trust a shop that couldn't properly diagnose my engine light, to then go and properly do internal engine work.

Too bad you couldn't have brought the customer in the shop to give him a crash-course!!!!!! Or at least showed him the difference between a known good "EKG" and his car's "A-Fib" pattern. People will believe Dr.'s so why not be able to show the customer what's going on........or, send him this video to talk it over with his cardiologist!!!!!!

That’s funny. Yes. People do believe everything a Dr says. But unfortunately us techs are still looked down upon by the public. They remember their dad fixing his car in the garage, and think it’s the same now. But Drs are looked up to. Heck, parents always tell their kids to “be a dr. Or be a lawyer” It’s rare for parents to say “go and get a job in the trades”
