Why do goalies keep saying "I didn't want to cross the center ice line", when the rule has NOTHING to do with center. The rule is leaving your crease to participate in a gathering - minor penalty all day. Crossing the center only applies to being an ineligible player when playing the puck beyond center.

because, in beer leagues especially, there is a history of refs calling the penalty just for crossing the line when somethings going on, even if they are there to help break it up or to just support.
