tbh i think part of the reason for the inconsistency in attitudes towards people having sex is that the religious sex fixation is ultimately about controlling people and perpetuating power structures. they freak out when people are abstinate for their own reasons because then they can't use the taboo they created around sex to control those people. anything that prevents you from making more christian babies and feeling eternally guilty so you keep coming back to give them more money is a big problem for them.

That theyd grow up and be a mama. So they grew up with this idealised version of a house with a white picket fence and 2.5 children and a labrador and a husband who comes home from worknst 5 with a kiss on the cheek and tells her she looks lovely today while the kids run to the door to great their dad. As an atheist who has a hint of religion in my immediate family and a lot more in my distant family which I recently saw for the US holiday, (& also taking a class on Plato’s dialogues with a religious teacher) becoming familiar with religious beliefs for the purpose of knowing exactly what the Christian nationalists have in store, does not make them any more believable. It’s a system of (sometimes) logically connected beliefs based on a kernel of untruth with several leaps of faith smoothing over the contradictions. I’ve recently come to fully understand the Christian definition of marriage which is pretty horrifying imho. (So Trigger Warning ahead) The gist is that it’s not just one cis man and one cis woman, but they have to be sexually and romantically active and exclusive for a whole lifetime for the purpose of procreation. Purity culture and r@pe culture are enforced by this definition. One must keep oneself pure until marriage and if you didn’t then it must be because you wanted it because everyone wants sex because it’s part of being human, or so they say. Very victim blamey. This system is completely natural but it’s also religiously mandated. They don’t want people to experience life outside of their understanding of what humanity is and it’s so strict that, especially with the built in racism, is catastrophically genocidal to all cultures and people outside of their definition of normal. I, on the other hand, think it’s pretty weird to think that the human experience is or should be so narrow.

I think part of the problem is that they think nature does have (and requires) someone controlling it, their big guy in the sky. Without him, they insist that everything would fall apart. Everything they don’t like is evidence of the little evil man trying to destroy what their guy made, even though he’s one of those creations. They can’t distinguish between natural and created because they think everything was designed by their guy. It’s so hard to get them out of seeing through such a self justifying lens.
