The worst part is they spent too much time wet with the battery connected. A quick fresh water wash and disconnected battery as soon as it was flooded would save Alot of hassles with wet cars.

I wonder how many of them are old cars like that Chevy. Those are worth purchasing, salvage title or not, and rebuilding. Here in NY, I could make up a VIN or serial number for a car and boom, issued a new transferable registration. Happens all the time with classic cars that get restored.

I have heard for the COD vehicles, that mechanics liens can be filed against them in other states. When the titles are awarded the actually come back perfectly clean. I would suspect there’s a lot of that going on if the above is correct

They should have the destruction title and there should be a prison sentence for anyone that alters it. These cars are often sold to the vulture "buy here pay here" dirtballs and the "owners" have no way to know the history. They should drill a hole in the engine block and the transmission as soon as a flood claim is filed. I have no patience for these fraudsters. If you know what you are buying and know the risks and agree to take responsiblity, well go ahead but you cant sell it as "reconditioned".

People who can afford these cars usually have homes in other places like New York, and are not going to fly to Florida to move a car- the rich are a different breed- they just settle with their flood insurance and buy another one. Then the gold chain -open shirt types who scraped up enough for a lease payment and are now running from the repo man will head directly for the hurricane in hopes of getting the insurance payout.

From someone that lives at Ground Zero, let me share with you the Hurricane wasn't even forecast to hit here until 18-24 hrs before hand. A 16 foot storm surge wasn't forecasted until 4-6 hrs prior. At that point one's life is all that matters, you leave (if you left ) with a car. Not all your cars. Trust me physical shit is replaceable, human life isn't. This from a guy that has over 500K in losses

Copart and IAA most cars are dealer or parts only however there are brokers anyone can use to buy (for a fee-usually about $300 per car). As for how hard to fix-could be very minimal to cost more than a new car.
