fun facts about Insomnium - Niilo Sevanen, the lead singer just published his first novel and his day job is being the Director of Culture of Kotka, Finland. Ville Friman, the lead guitarist's day job is a lecturer of Evolutionary Ecology at the University of York in the UK, during covid he was apart of Finland's science advisory council for their response to the pandemic.

Insomnium is indeed melodic death metal aka melodeath. A hallmark genre with a huge representation in Finland and Sweden with bands like Insomnium, Children of Bodom, Amorphis, Wintersun, Norther, In Flames and so many more. I believe you've heard at least a few of the aforementioned before on this channel! The melodic guitar/keyboard lines backing the harsh vocals are indeed a signature thing with melodeath as you suspected, they're basically where the "melodic" in "melodic death metal" comes from!

I just saw Insomnium in Dallas a few weeks ago with Omnium Gatherum. (Both bands share a lead guitar who's been with both bands for 13+ years. He pulled double duty on this tour!!) The only song Insomnium played from this album was "Only One Who Waits" (4th track). Still holding out hope that one day I'll see them play "Inertia / Through the Shadows" (first two tracks). Everything on this album is fantastic. One of my favorite complete albums. My other favorite from this album is "Unsung" (5th track). Would be great to see a reaction to that one!
