I love the “Brian’s pens” segment and would love to see more. For me it gave an added depth into how much you really communicate with individuals in the pen community and how much the company considers big and small manufacturers alike. I wouldn’t be mad if it made it into every episode. So fun, and the one episode (maybe it was two actually) when Drew raided Brian’s pen cabinets when Brian was out of town was so entertaining. It’s fun to see the product (double entendre intended) of Brian’s passionate collectors mentality! Thanks for the episode you two.

BOTTLES: I"m glad you mentioned the Jacques Herbin bottles, very classy and simple. The Diamine bottles with the legs are the best bottles ever! SOOO cool looking and they come with great packaging. But what about functionality? The old Waterman bottles and the Montblanc bottles are designed to tilt to help you get out the last bits of ink....
@heathergleiser Жыл бұрын
The Montblanc bottles with the half circle indent in the bottom are so clever. Bungubox has a similar design and the box acts as a stand to tilt the bottle for getting the last drops out.

Less than 5 min and I already have a huge smile on my face 😃 This dynamic duo doesn’t disappoint! My 2 cents on the matte black vs black matte, as a non native English speaker, English has crazy rules about adjectives and their correct order, the variation is most likely due to these rules “being lost in translation” 😉🖋
@leftiesoutnumbered Жыл бұрын
I think you're right! As a native English speaker, we aren't taught this order explicitly. At least, I wasn't. We just know because it sounds wrong or right. So matte black sounds more right, and it is based on actual rules. It's pretty much as such: opinion, size, physical quality, shape, age, colour, origin, material, purpose.

I like the look of all the Art Déco bottles, but if I had to pick one it would be Graf von Faber-Castell because it's just so stately. Another one is S.T. Dupont's Shield/Herald bottle(especially the ones that come in the full bottle set with the coloured enamel in-fill on the metal D on the cap, the turquoise enamel is especially luscious). Honourable out-of-production mention to the OMAS octagonal bauble bottle, which can even be tilted for low-level filling. It has to be said that 90% of the pretty ink bottles are premium tier garbage to fill from, they're all form and no function. You have to give it to Waterman for producing such a dirt cheap bottle that does everything well: looks, filling, stability, etcetera. Oh and Drew, if you have sensitive or dry skin, try Stirling's Scots Pine Sheep saving soap(they may make other Sheep scents by now). Also, Canada has many lakes because of glaciers scraping across the ground.

Also, re: safety razors, I've been using one for over a decade now. Just a cheap $35 one with cheap Derby razor blades. I've even gotten past girlfriends into them because they're so inexpensive and practical. Probably at least a decade as well, here. Got tired of paying a fortune for a plastic rack of "disposable" blade units with x blades that clogged up and couldn't accomplish the job until you'd cycled through at least 4-5 of them to get rid of a full beard. Found a "Merkur" brand (German) safety razor holder on Amazon that I used for a few years, until I started making my own pens on a lathe, and found a shaver kit of the same nature, and made my own. Been using it for over 3 years now.

Table is definitely in its ultimate form. Chair could still be improved. I'm thinking a pants/chair hybrid. You put the pants/chair on and you walk around and whenever you need to pause, it just supports you wherever you happen to be. If you squat down and pause, it knows to hold you there. If you're in line, it adjusts every time you move forward so you don't have to keep switching legs.

Re: black matte vs. matte black, in English (and probably other languages), there's an unspoken order of adjectives: opinion, size, age, shape, color, origin, material, purpose. You'd say "the big, red, rubber ball" not "the rubber, red, big ball". This might be a hiccup with Pilot - a Japanese company - and less of an issue with Anglophone companies and our German cousins. Or it could be purely coincidental.

Actually, it‘s not unspoken. Any good grammar book will give you the fundamental guidelines (although there can be some leeway). Essentially, the adjectives that are more general come first; as they become more specific, they move closer to the noun. You give a perfect example of this order.

Drew… oh Drew. Breathe, Drew. Toilets are not the boss of you. Remember that this is not your highest and best thing (you being our pen god and all) and call a plumber.

I once bought a bottle of Mont Blanc ink (black) just for the bottle. I really should put it into a pen and use it.

In regards to guessing what pen color or ink color will be popular the coming year-refer to Pantone. They look at color trends in several industries when choosing their color of the year.

Yes, we've seen a few pen companies get on the pantone trend - but I still don't think they'll be among the most popular of 2023. We shall see! - Drew

LAMY bottles really work well as a top if you spin it after removing the bottom. Just make sure you dont spin it so hard it crashes into something.
