I have 4 Windows systems on a KVM switch with 50 feet of cables. Works great locally. Over the internet, I use Remote Desktop with TailScale on each system. TailScale creates a virtual local network. Each system has it's own static virtual IP. This all works really well, solves some key internet problems and reduces attack surface.

Nomachine works really great for me, and it can be installed on Windows, Mac, Linux, and ARM (like RPi4). Also, Steam Link works if you have Steam installed on your hosts because it now allows you to exit "Big Picture" mode and that basically dumps you into the desktop of the remote host. I usually use Nomachine to remote into my Windows VM for work from my Linux machine, and even used to play games over Nomachine, but recently, I switched to Steam Link for games instead since it is just that bit more responsive to the mouse.

I'll give it a try. Actually I prefer to use Plasma but for the remote server I'm installing now I'll take Gnome and try it out. I find it really strange that in 2023 there is still not a really good, fast open source solution. Proprietary there are many good, fast remote desktop solutions. But native and open source - difficult. Let's see if gnome-remote-desktop is any good.

To remedy cursor issue I recommend drawing your own cursor and you'll find out that there is an option to set where the pointer pixel is relative to cursor sprite. On a all default cursors it is at the top left corner, which only adds up to confusion. I made myself a cross-hair type sprite with the smallest size that is comfortable at the viewing distance and moved pointer pixel to its center and it is a lot more accurate using peripheral vision this way. Been using it for years now. This way you don't really need it to change for adjustment cursors like window resize cursor or text editor one, its universal.

The issue I'm running into is after downloading Genome-remote desktop on Mint I cannot for the life of me figure out how to access it. Any idea what I'm missing? I can find it the application in Software Manager but the only option is to remove it. Correct me if wrong, but "what I'm missing" is this application is not for Mint if I'm not using Gnome GUI?

I'm in process of finally switching to Linux full time (from Windows) on my 'main' computer at home, but I need to be able to remote in while I'm at work. MS RDP has been great in this regard. But I've been racking my head testing various Linux alternatives like X2Go, XRDP, No Machine. The key features I want are to resume where I left off, and have a locked console at home so nobody can see what I'm doing when I'm remoted in from work. Is XRDP the only option? The Sharing and SSH Prompts stay enabled over a reboot but Remote Desktop does not. I am running PopOS 22.04 on Synology Virtual Machine Manager so not dedicated. VNC does work when it is enabled (even after reboot if I reenable). Another issue I have. With VNC I make the connection and get a black screen but i move the mouse and all good. How can windows solve the remote login issue and ubuntu can't? I'm sad I can't use my machine fully remote. I can wake it etc. but can't login :( theres a gnome extension for the locked screen only. On ubuntu the screen is mirrored as is. I understand the security issue. But why not do what windows does? If you r logged in locally remote session quits, if you r logged in remotely, local session throws you back to login screen. Why mirror? I don't get it.
@jackt6112
@jackt6112 Жыл бұрын
>How can windows solve the remote login issue and ubuntu can't? < Key parts of Windows NT/Portable OS/2 are highly optimized for the processors they run. Red Hat publicly challenged Windows to a performance test under mutually agreed upon terms of without GUI and embarrassingly lost and spent considerable time trying to explain how they didn't really lose. That's without the GUI. The Win 16/32/64 API is more vector-region-based. (A brief look at the Windows API will show you what I mean) Either the PC memory is used to store the screen information to send, the video card, or the video card works out the vectors, as is the case with nVidia's CUDA technology and why CAD users are willing to pay so much for it. If nVidia is involved, that tells me they are using their technology to create rather than interpret and render. (CUDA in reverse) Video processors are very fast at this because they can run use instructions of a fixed size (RISC) which enables parallel threads without reordering and optimize to keep most jumps in high-speed memory to minimize the impact of flush. This is also why video cards are used to crack passwords, not the PC's CPU. While X was designed client-server, that capability loses a lot of its practicality once you leave the LAN, especially with the resolutions we use today. Bill Gates put a gun to Ed Iacobucci's head (CITRIX) and could deny him license. Ed held out and Bill said he had another source. Bill came back and paid Ed dearly for RDP but Ed wouldn't sell him other key technologies thereby preserving CITRIX. Microsoft renamed it to Microsoft Terminal Services, and why the client is named mstsc.exe. It took cubic cash and brain cells for XEROX -> Microsoft -> nVidia to work this all out. The little I've read about Wayland has not given me a clear vision of their strategy, it has been a very long time coming, and some major distro players very slow to accept or resistant, which might indicate they aren't convinced Wayland is the answer. So, *NIX desktops can be pretty nice locally but pretty challenged remotely, especially when there are multiple subscribers.
