I know PRS has a reputation as being “Corksniffer-esque” but the Core McCarty 594SC takes the ‘58 Les Paul and perfects it. I never knew a guitar could feel like it was made for you. These do.

I repair guitars and have had numerous examples of this model, from the SE to the Core. The SE is a great guitar, but there's a larger difference between it and the S2 than there is between the S2 and Core. The necks are extremely close, and pickups aside they sound the same. And if you've played one guitar from a particular model you've essentially played them all. One thing PRS have been known for from the earliest days right up to the present, is to manufacture their guitars with an almost inconceivable level of consistency. Not just from a QC aspect, but in the tone. Anyone who's played enough Strats, Teles, Les Pauls and so on, can attest that there can be noticeable differences from one guitar to the next, even between identical models. PRS on the other hand all sound the same, even with guitar types that typically vary greatly from one to the next, like semihollows*. If I could give any advice about buying a PRS, it's that if you can find the one that you want, it's better to buy a used ones. Guitars have always been like cars: terrible investments because they only depreciate until you get to the antique/vintage age. This has been upended over the last few years, where guitars that only came out a year or two prior are as much as new ones, if not more. This will not be a permanent state though. Covid changed the guitar market almost overnight. Gibson went from having it's biggest sales declines in their history just over the previous two years, to having the demand outstrip their supply. That state of affairs had an expiration date though, one which was hit a year or so ago with declining sales in the used market. PRS, while being the most expensive guitars, always had low resale value compared to Fender and Gibson. They're by no means cheap, but that's only because they're so expensive when they're new. While I can't back this up with numbers, knowing as many PRS owners and fanboys that I've met over two plus decades in a repair shop, I believe it comes down to the type of people who buy PRS. They tend to be older, and have a lot of disposable income. They know what they want and can afford them, so they buy them new. I did a pickup swap in a Core McCarty singlecut only a couple weeks ago that the guy was able to pick up for $2100. I remember the price because it struck me as an odd number. It wasn't in "like-new" condition, but it Was in really good condition. I think it had one small chip in the back on the edge and a little bit of play wear that could easily be removed. I was actually a bit jealous that he got it for that price, but they've been selling for around $2500 for a while. The prices of used S2s have been tumbling pretty dramatically, I've seen them as low as $1000 but there's no reason to need to spend more than $1200 for one. Due to the consistency of their guitars, you don't have to worry about it sounding different from one you've already played, so it just comes down to the finish you like and condition. *That said I'm curious as to how consistent the Ash Special SE (or whatever it's called). Ash is a tone wood that's notoriously fickle when it comes to the tone. You can have two ash bodied Teles, both the same model and weight, but one will be bright and cutting while the other is warm but punchy. I guess you could always just load the finish on it and it'll mitigate any variances, but who wants that.

I have a core and an SE and the SE to me holds up very well. I would rather have an SE for the price than an S2. The core is a work of art. I bought my core sued for $2300. It’s a 10 top too. I find myself playing the SE the most tho. No clue why lol

Correction: The tuner buttons are a new shape, but are still the old Kluson style and are not Phase III tuners. Phase III tuners are PRS open-back locking tuners which come standard on many trem equipped PRS guitars like the Custom 24.

I really wanted one of these 594 guitars but the price for the core model is crazy. Instead of the core model I picked up a McCarty 594 S2 10th Anniversary DC model. This special edition S2 has the core electronics and hardware and it is much cheaper. When it arrived I could not find one flaw with this guitar and the setup was perfect out of the box. It is a fantastic guitar but it doesnt look as good as this 10 top core model in this video. I find the 10 top PRS guitars not worth the upcharge as a lot of the non 10 tops look pretty good as well.

I REALLY like PRS guitars, they're just very well thought out. My only questionable thought on any guitar wit a stop tail/hard tail/string through bridge is that locking tuners should be an option with a $20 upgrade charge. If it's an option I see it as a possible bonus, if desired, to the buyer. If they're available in the factory, they're just as easy to install & make string changes easier/faster.

All non trem PRS models going forward will not have locking tuners. To reduce the weight on the headstock. When the 594 was first introduced, a few years ago they originally had them
