Thanks to a viewer's comment I have been alerted of high VRM temperatures on the MSI RTX 4070 Ventus 3X. Upon further investigation, it seems like they have a design flaw where the heatsink does not cool the VRM phases on the top side of the PCB. AVOID THIS CARD! The MSI RTX 4070 Ventus 3X and the Ventus 2X are both (either OC or non OC) affected by this design flaw.

How come you mention at 26m50 to 27m05 that an 8 pin can supply 400-500 watts yet when I look up "8 pin vs 12 pin gpu" they say: "8-pin cables and connectors are a standard, specified to carry up to 150W (hence why modern high end cards need two of them), while 12-pin is a proprietary NVIDIA thing that is specified to carry 500W (while 6-pin is specified for 75W, and the PCIe slot itself is also 75W)." You mean 3X8pins can supply up to 500 watts right? 3x150+75 (PCIE slot) = 525W

The part with the temperature on the mosfet of the 4070 ventus is a complete nothingburger and exactly the reason why you shouldn't listen to random youtubers. The thoughtprocess this guy must have amuses me. "Hurpdidurp, I'm sure the engineeringteam just forgot to add cooling for the mosfets. I guess they designed it before their lunchbreak on a Mondaymorning and kinda forgot about it. With my superior insight I must warn everybody of this DESIGNFLAW! And to seem knowledgable I'll pull up this PDF sheet with SPECIFICATIONS!! CANCEL ZE ORDERS YOU FOOLS THE CARD WILL EXPLODE!!! Damn I'm so smart." Brother. The recommended operating temperature literally specified the part up to 125 degrees. Given the measured temperature under full load is a full 30 degrees below the upper range, this is at the very very very worst an extremely mild concern. Specifications and ratings are there for a reason and thouroughly tested. As long as you run in specifications it won't die. Just because 95° sounds a lot for you in the context of graphic chips and you fainting in the sauna, it doesn't mean it's inadequate for other parts. That's what specifications are for. So you can read. And not listen to your ape instincts and go uh 95°C hot, no cool no bueno. Sure cooler is "technically better" but cooling is just not needed at all. The only reason to cool these mosfets is just so clueless people like you don't spread misinformation.

how come the techpowerup review of ventus 3x didn't mention anything about high VRM temps? how do we know if other cards don't have similiar issues? how do we even know it is a problem?
@peoplez129 Жыл бұрын
The reason for the bigger coolers is that after 70c+, the overclocking stability of these chips tend to drop drastically. Like with the 1080ti, if you run it at 84c, it won't reach near the same overclocks at lower voltages. The hotter it gets, the more voltage you need to reach a stable overclock. For example, if you wanted 1700mhz at 0.8v, you needed sub 70c temps. If you ran at 84c, you'd be lucky to get 1600mhz at 0.85v. With lower temps, the card could reach max voltage overclocks at undervolted levels, hitting 1900mhz at 0.9v, allowing the card to overclock and run cooler. So it's not so much about getting higher overclocks than others, it's about reaching the same max overclock at lower voltages, and thus having a cooler more stable card, and that undervolting will also increase longevity. One thing people don't realize about GPU's, is max clocking and max volting them does reduce their max clocks at a given voltage after a few years. My 1080ti does not overclock like it used to, even with undervolting. I used to be able to run 1800mhz at 0.85v all day. Now I can't even really touch 1800mhz without 0.9v. This is why used mining cards are soo bad, because even if they function, they definitely do lose overclocking capability with age because of voltage leak and voltage degradation, even when run below max voltage. All you can do at a certain point is lower the clocks and let the voltages creep up, until the card is soo out of spec that it basically needs more than max voltage to even run at all, at which point failure sets in. The future for graphic card longevity isn't components burning out, but rather, the bios not letting the card run anymore because the necessary voltage to run it gets higher than maximum. Once the card reaches this point, on startup the bios will see the voltage required to get things going is above maximum and just refuse to post, and that's how you end up with a "burned out" graphics card. It's technically still operational, it just won't let itself run. It's like a safety feature that measures the resistance, realizing that voltage over the years has atomically disintegrated the pathways enough that it takes too much voltage to post.

Ofcourse I get that. Nvidia GPUs have always scaled with temperature since pascal. But they really don’t need to run that cool at stock settings if they’re sacrificing fan noise.

For a few weeks I was daily monitoring the temperatures in various different spots and most carefully around the VRMs. I pushed the card to its limits with afterburner and never measured temperatures more than 78C on components and 82C on HWiNFO64 sensors. Still, I feel like being scammed and I wish there is a way to modify the card in order to make it somehow decent. It would be great if you could try fix this card and give some advice as how can be done, if can be done. Thanks for all the good advices you give in your channel. Appreciated a lot.

@@OTechnology I was measuring with an IR thermometer from the front and the top of the card while I was stress testing it. Higher temperatures measured at the inductors. Controllers are getting cooled since they are attached to the cooler with thermal pads. I didn't do it. I decided it to leave it alone because I could never verify the high temperatures measured with my card. What I did was, to undervolted my card, it took it like a champ! I m running 2730Mzh at 0.975 Volt curve and custom fan curve at MSI Afterburner and it stays cool as any other card. I also gave an extra 100rpm to the lower fan at the front of my case and I m gaming 45-50C with 20C ambient. Sure enough the card is fantastic for one more reason. Because of the direction of the fins, it pushes some of the heat straight out at the back of the case so benefits my CPU cooling as well. I am relaxed now and enjoy gaming that's what I did. @@Andytlp

Ooo, I really appreciate this kind of meta-analysis! Of particular interest to me is cooling system acoustics (with temperatures within reason) and coil whine, and you did covered these topics extensively. I kind of love the ASUS DUAL card, and so I really appreciate knowing before I buy either that is has been found to have more coil whine than the reference PCB. Here's a secret for you coil whine haters out there. The universal end-user solution to lowering coil whine is to lower power or clock targets. I never buy my graphics card for maximum performance because quiet operation is my #1 goal, and I've always been comfortable lowering power targets or clock targets to both allow super-slow fan spin and to reduce coil whine under most scenarios. Unlike undervolting, there's no risk to stability, but there will always be a performance impact. I happily throw away 10-20% performance in order to make it so I can't hear the cards fans or PCB, nor feel the heat coming from it. That's why the RTX 4070 is of any interest to me at all -- the one thing it has over every other card in its class right now -- efficiency!

I can get the 4070 gigabyte gaming oc for €667( 20 more than I bought the msi ventus for) and according to some forums, gigabyte gaming is in general better odds of having less/no coil whine. But I also see a sale this week: from €909 --> €819 for the gigabyte 4070 ti windforce. Do you guys think this is worth the extra €€ and the fact that it is windforce not gaming oc?

100° is well lower than the recommended and max operating temperature of the MOSFETs according to their datasheet. The MSI Ventus is fine, you don't have to slap thermal pads on every component of a low power card.
@OTechnology Жыл бұрын
When the other cards have VRMs below 70C then close to 100C is pretty bad.
@arctu75 Жыл бұрын
@@OTechnology As long as it is within spec, why does it matter? it isn't going to influence the lifetime or voltage stability in any meaningful way. Also, this isn't a "VRM". Its a MOSFET with integrated gate driver, so just a part of the VRM. More or less just a switch that a controller can open or close really fast. Voltage stability is job of that controller and not the MOSFET.

It's not, remember that the constant fluctuation between hot and cold when turned off will cause the component and surrounding materials to have thermal exhaustion sooner than a dissipated MOSFET, this GPU will last many years less than a better dissipated one
