First up, I apologise for just having one Columbus Zoo video. I had intended to put several of these videos up this week, but the folder they were in accidentally got deleted, and no amount of data recovery could make them turn up. I'll be going back to the Columbus Zoo soon, so I'll get the videos back. Again, I apologise.
So in lieu of Zoo videos, I have one on Town & Country Shopping Center, located on E Broad St in Whitehall, OH (a suburb of Columbus). Town & Country is one of the first shopping centers in the country, first envisioned in 1947 by developer Don M Castro and broke ground November 11, 1948.
Original stores included S.S. Kresge, J. C. Penney and F. W. Woolworth. Being planned as a strip mall, it allowed customers to window shop without actually going into the store. Also, plenty of parking in front for easy access to the stores, was a boon to post-WWII shoppers. By 1968 the shopping center had around 75 stores.
The mall got a facelift in the late 1970s to help it compete with the newer indoor malls cropping up over the last 10-15 years. Around this time I remember I was staying for a few days with my brother and his wife, and I walked up a train track to head to E Broad St. Had no idea the mall was there, mind you, I was around 16 years old.
When I got there I discovered a hobby store, filled with models. I had been building mostly airplane models at the time, but since I actually lived in the then-village of Groveport, my only source was either the local pharmacy or when a family member went to a store that had them.
I felt like I was in model heaven, seeing so many boxes of models. I loved it.
There was another remodel of the mall in the 1990s to highlight the more individual aspects of the stores. These days, there isn't nearly as many stores as there were in the past, but judging from my video, Town & Country Shopping Center still seems to be thriving for the community. With that and the stores and food places surrounding it, I suspect T&C will be around for years to come.
Now this Saturday I will be at the Columbus Air Show, so expect videos from that starting then, and for a couple weeks to come. See you then, and Thanks for Watching!
