All love to photoshop only designers, but “I don’t need illustrator” is what I used to say before I learned illustrator. It is one of the most important/effortless program for getting your ideas out of your head on on to the screen. Photoshop for vector work is clunky and frankly really horrible compared to ai. Photoshop is a must learn but so is illustrator you will be so much faster and come off more professional if you can use both programs.

I agreed that most important things to do with graphic design, is enjoy the process, because artworks have too much variety and many styles nowadays, either is I inspire you, or you inspire me. I took diploma in graphic design went to college blindly, it's really struggling at first, because i was too focusing at the outcome and didn't enjoy the progression. After pandemic hits, and i quitted full-time job of graphic design, because i find it not enjoyable as you mention (treating design as a job instead of collaboration), but slowly i found the purpose of it, is a best ways for communication & eye catching, it's just not only design for aesthetic, it will be a extreme powerful message to conveying other people. I always thinks that graphic designer always hide their design process (and not showing to public), but i'm happy to see that you done a design process video which i enjoyed to watch, keep it up!

The hate on Arial goes waaay back (90s). It basically stems from Bill Gates hating on Apple and Mac users for their love of fonts (especially Helvetica which was not on Windows). Bill famously said “why would anyone want more than one font.” (Courier) … But in the end, Bill spent a bucket load of cash on Arial as a Helvetica replacement. So it was always referred to as a poor substitute for Helvetica … even though Bill spent so much on it! So the hate is legacy hate from last millennium based on Apple vs Microsoft wars. As for comic sans … it’s great for a child’s birthday party … but when you see it in a Corporate PowerPoint delivered to clients on a big screen, it causes a vein to pop in the Brand Manager’s head!

@@loveinahopelessplace Learning both is always good. I’m in a program, at my university, where they teach us the basics of almost every Adobe program. I’m mainly focusing on UI/UX design though. I was learning graphic design but graphic design is pretty much dead. no company is going out of their way to hire graphic designers.

Graphic designers aren’t “hating on Comic Sans for no reason”, they hating the fact that not only is it overused, it is _misused_. Comic Sans was originally designed for a very specific application: a children’s computer program called 3D Movie maker. It was later included as a system font in Windows 95. As for Arial, it has its place as a default system font that everyone has and is therefore suitable for things like EDMs and email signatures. It is however Microsofts inferior knock-off version of Helvetica. If given the option, the choice between the two is obvious but both are lazy choices. Also, ironic that you’re criticising Designer’s Humour for being self deprecating when that’s a big part of _your_schtick 🤔

I'm well aware that there are some who understand that it's the application that should be criticised not the font. But there is 100% a crowd who hate comic sans because they think it's bad and can't see past that. That crowd is who I'm criticising in that comment. And I understand if my content comes across as self-deprecating sometimes but honesty is always the intention.

@@drrMonManon They may not be consciously aware of it but as I said, most people hate it because it is so overused and misused. I notice the only time Elliott has used the font has been ironically and there is a good reason for that. What’s boring is using default system fonts when there are literally so many amazing type foundries out there and even a lot of decent free options if you have a limited budget. There’s just no excuse for bad type.

also! hating on comic sans for no reason is very much ableist! comic sans is widely used for people with dyslexia! the font has no geometric shapes and all of the shapes in the letters are unique, making comic sans a highly legible font. the way the letterforms are designed prevents mirroring or flipping letters upside down. there are other fonts out there that were specifically designed for dyslexia, but comic sans (as well as Arial!!) has one of the highest legibility out there. hating comic sans is not a personality trait!
