I love the original Japanese mochis, but I've never tried your kit, Tam. To the people who are saying "it looks so gross", I would say, these kits are fun kits! They are meant to be funny :-) Of course we all know how "real" food looks like, but why can't we all just have a little bit of innocent fun?

Yeah the texture of mochi (Moh-chee like cheese) does kind of take some getting used to. It's supposed to resemble classic pounded mochi (rice pounded into a paste) that you beat with a wooden mallet until it's soft and malleable. I can imagine it would probably be easier to pound the chocolate and green tea into the mochi since unless it's wrapped around something, stuff doesn't like to stick to mochi :/

I love mochi ice cream. Most of the sushi places here in America have it. My favorite is the strawberry(probably not something you would ever find in Japan). I'm not crazy about the non ice cream ones thought but I think that's because I don't like the traditional flavors they come in(red bean, green tea, things like that). I've never had slimy mochi. It might have tasted better if you had patted the excess water off of the rice with a paper towel.
