Victor Feldman is a criminally underrated genius of Jazz. How he builds up solos is miracolous.

Wonderful drummer! Here is an unbelievable video where he's playing with Martial Solal: kzbin.info/www/bejne/foHJpHygqtaHkNU&ab_channel=GregBagley The song, "On Green Dolphin Street", begins about 40 seconds into the video. Would be really proud to have Ronnie as my uncle!

Wow. Really cool to see Rick Laird so young (I only really knew him from Mahavishnu Orchestra Mark I). I enjoy Feldman's conception, and he has a great compositional ear ("Seven Steps" and "Joshua" are two Miles favorites.) Thanks for posting!

I prefer this traditional approach to jazz but putting your own stamp on it. This is great stuff! When people say they play their own music that doesn't mean it's automatically as good as anything that's ever been done. I love tradition taken to a high level like this. Victor Feldman was loved by the best musicians in the world and that says it all.

My parents used to speak about Victor Feldman, having admired this precocious young drummer in the bands to which they danced in the 40s. I first came across the name (again) on Miles Davis's 'Quiet Nights' and wondered if it could be the same artist. Finding him again on Barney Kessel and, of course, Steely Dan records, plus on his own work, confirmed this to be the case. A very, very fine musician, and, it seems, a very likable man who passed away too soon. Thanks for uploading.

It's coincidental that you mentioned Derek Smith. I recorded with him when I was still a kid in NYC. It was a Jersey session in the mid 1970's for a good Italian singer. Jay Leonardt was on bass, but I do not remember the drummer. Anyway, I love playing Victor Feldman's own compositions.

The first Brit to play with a jazz master? I think not! Benny Carter recorded with whole bands of Brits on the 30s, and he wasn't the only one. Then there was Ray Noble's work with people like Bud Freeman, Ronnie Ball with Lee Konitz....

The second half of the statement that Victor Feldman was "1) the first British jazz player to collaborate with a bone fide jazz master .... 2) when he played on the Miles Davis recording 'Seven Steps To Heaven' in 1963" ignores that in 1960 he worked and recorded with the Cannonball Adderley Quintet on its "Live at the Lighthouse" album for Riverside, produced by Orrin Keepnews. A great album, by the way.
