A historical home in Oakwood, Ohio with ties to the Cheez-it crackers has recently been put up for sale on the market. The 6 bedroom home located at 125 park avenue in Oakwood, Ohio was once the home of Joseph W. And Eleanor C. Green. Joseph was part of the founding family of The Green and Green company along with his brother Weston and his father John.
The Green and Green company started in 1897 when the Green family founded a small cracker manufacturing company after purchasing Wolf crackers. They did not know at the time their company would grow to produce one of the most well known crackers called Cheez-its.
After World War One, The Greens moved into their Park Avenue home across from Hawthorn Hill. Hawthorn Hill is the home of aviation inventors Orville and Wilbur Wright.
The cracker company started as a small scale company on North Main Street. Dayton was rapidly growing at the time and soon the company would grow right along with the city. The crackers made at the time were known as flag crackers or Dayton crackers and were traded all over the state of Ohio.
In March 1905, a portion of the plant was destroyed by a fire but the Greens did not let the fire ruin their business and grew from the ashes to an even greater company.
As the company grew, so did the need for a larger plant. In November of 1906, Weston announced a new plant would be built at the corner of Cincinnati and Concord Streets in What is now called the Edgemont historical district.
In 1907 the new 5 story plant opened and began manufacturing Edgemont crackers. At this time, the company had branches in both Springfield, Ohio and Lima, Ohio.
The Edgemont plant was state of the art having natural light, electric light, ventilation, a laundry room, furnished restrooms, an elevator, and a glass door entrance.
The company’s founding member John Green passed away in 1911 after a short illness.
The company would continue to grow and create new products. In 1921 The Green and Green company introduced the famous Cheez-it cracker. By 1923, the Edgemont company was producing 4,400 Edgemont crackers a minute to meet the demand.
Following complications from surgery, Weston died in 1926.
In 1930, The Green and Green company was sold to the Loose-Wiles company, where business continued to grow and Joseph served as a manager.
Loose-Wiles later became the Sunshine Biscuit
Company. The Sunshine Co. identified itself with the sun symbol and with bringing sunshine into people's lives. In 1996, Keebler bought Sunshine Biscuit.
Today Cheez-Its are made by Kellogg, which
acquired Keebler in 2000, but the company still uses the iconic sunshine trademark on every box of Cheez-it’s.
Joseph retired in 1937 and spent the next 10 years participating in various clubs and activities. In 1947, Joseph died at his 125 Park avenue residence.
Joseph, Eleanor, Weston and John are all buried with many family members at the Green family plot in section 105 at Dayton’s historical Woodland cemetery.
The Green home is currently listed for sale at 975,000 Dollars. The home has 6 bedrooms, 4 and a half baths and a three car garage.
